Chapter 54: An Yiyi
“What were you doing? Why did it take you so long?”
Chen Cheng looked at Chen Jiamu, who had taken forever to emerge, and frowned in suspicion. What was he sneaking around for?
“Nature called.”
Chen Jiamu pursed his lips, trying to look as natural as possible. He then changed the subject, asking why she had called him. “What did you need me for?”
“Mom and Dad want to introduce a girl to you. Look, the one over there in the pink dress.”
Following Chen Chengās gaze, Chen Jiamu saw a stunning figure. The girl had long, jet-black hair, skin like porcelain, and delicate, exquisite features. She radiated a classic, old-world elegance.
She looked like a proper lady from a prestigious family.
Perhaps sensing his gaze, the girl turned her head instinctively. As their eyes met, she raised her hand and waved with a polite smile.
Chen Cheng found the gesture very pleasing. She patted Chen Jiamu on the shoulder and whispered, “This one is decent. Generous and gentle.”
“You might want to consider getting to know her. Plus, she’s so pretty.”
Almost instantly, Chen Jiamu guessed his parents’ intentions and hurriedly shook his head. “Forget it. I just got out of a relationship; I’m not in the mood.”
“I don’t want to waste her time. Someone that good deserves better. I’m just a slacker.”
“Well, at least you have some self-awareness.”
“However, Iām afraid you’ll have a hard time changing Mom and Dad’s minds. If you ask me, just pretend to add her on WeChat, then explain things clearly to her later. That way, no one’s time is wasted.”
Chen Cheng crossed her arms, looking at him with amusement. Chen Jiamu was tongue-tied, not knowing what to say for a moment, and finally just rolled his eyes in exasperation.
“Watching the fire from the safety of the shore, are we? If I do that, Mom and Dad will think I’m actually interested.”
“I can’t be bothered to invite trouble.”
Taking the wine glass Chen Cheng handed him, Chen Jiamu was suffering in silence, forced to swallow his bitterness.
“Then get ready to be nagged. Mom and Dad were just rushing me a couple of days ago.”
The speaker meant nothing by it, but the listener took it to heart. Chen Jiamuās heart suddenly lurched, and a trace of panic entered his eyes as he looked at Chen Cheng.
Mom and Dad were rushing her already?
He would never let Chen Cheng become a sacrifice for the family!
“Do they have nothing better to do?”
“If worst comes to worst, they can just produce a third child. Thatāll keep them busy.”
“Pfft.”
Chen Cheng was amused by his comment. She hadn’t expected that after a year apart, he would become so glib.
But after the laughter passed, she felt a pang of heartache. She saw maturity in his eyes.
In just one year, Chen Jiamu had grown a lot, but he must have suffered quite a bit too.
“By the way…”
“Wait, what happened to your mouth?”
Chen Cheng stared at him. She had intended to ask about his time in the other province, but out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the wound on the corner of his mouth.
“Oh, internal heat caused a blister. I accidentally bit it open.”
Chen Jiamu acted as calm as could be, but his fingertips, pinching incessantly at his side, betrayed his nervousness.
Fortunately, Chen Cheng didn’t notice his hands; her attention was on his mouth. “Stop staying up so late.”
“Anyway, Mom and Dad are bringing the girl over. And hey, don’t make it awkward for her or put her on the spot.”
“It’s fine if you embarrass yourself, just don’t drag others down with you.”
Chen Cheng was afraid Chen Jiamu might do something extreme and make everyone lose face.
“I know, I know. I’ll handle it.”
Just as they finished whispering, the three people opposite them arrived.
“Jiamu, this is your Uncle An’s daughter, An Yiyi. She’s twenty, two years younger than you, and just returned from abroad.”
“I thought since you’re the same age, you’d have things to talk about. You should hang out sometime.”
As Chen Wensong introduced An Yiyi, Chen Jiamu studied her features carefully. Suddenly, the image of a snot-nosed kid chasing after him resurfaced in his memory.
His eyes went wide with shock. He pointed at her and, after a long pause, shouted a nickname that floored everyone. “Snot-face! You’re that little dark-skinned girl who used to chase me around with a runny nose!”
Chen Jiamu’s two consecutive nicknames made everything go dark for the people standing there…
“Jiamu, you…”
Chen Cheng nearly choked on her wine. She hadn’t expected Chen Jiamu to say something so shocking.
“I…”
“You…”
An Yiyiās face turned bright red from anger. She stammered for a long time, unable to form a complete sentence.
“I haven’t been a ‘little dark girl’ for a long time.”
“It’s been so long, Brother Jiamu has become… quite humorous.”
After a long while, An Yiyi managed to smile and accept the comment. In two strokes, she actively revived the atmosphere.
“We’re all friends here. You two should add each other on WeChat and meet up to hang out sometime.”
“Right, Jiamu?”
Su Yi urged Chen Jiamu to take out his phone, but he really didn’t want to. He glanced at An Yiyi, then slowly pulled out his phone.
An Yiyi naturally didn’t miss this. She guessed Chen Jiamu was reluctant. To save him from a difficult spot, An Yiyi immediately pulled out her own phone and opened her QR code scanner. “Since I was the one chasing behind you when we were kids, I should be the one to add you first now that we’re grown up.”
At this point, Chen Jiamu had no choice but to open his QR code.
And this scene of the two of them scanning phones to add each other was witnessed perfectly by Li Qi, who had just returned to the front hall…
This is the “urgent matter” he had to do?
