Chapter 22: The Small-Time Star and His Short-Tempered Sugar Daddy (Part XXII)
“Have you heard of Xiao Ji before?”
In another corner of the kitchen, Lie, who was tossing a vegetable salad, whispered to Li Yun.
The voices of Xiao Ji and Cheng Nuo conversing just now weren’t quiet. Cheng Nuo might have appropriately controlled his volume, but Xiao Ji’s voice was no different from usual. Those few sentences transmitted nakedly into the ears of Lie and Li Yun, who were also in the kitchen.
Li Yun was beating eggs at the moment. Hearing this, she also whispered, “I haven’t followed him much. I only know his luck isn’t very good, but he gained a wave of fans. Seeing him for the first time, he’s different from what I imagined.”
Lie agreed. “I don’t know why, but I just feel he’s very funny…”
Li Yun looked at Lie and suddenly laughed. “And very handsome. Do you have any ideas?”
Lie shook her head. “His looks are to my taste, but I tend to prefer a partner who knows how to care for others. What about you?”
Li Yun was very casual. “I don’t have any specific requirements; it all depends on the feeling.”
Xiao Ji had already brought his plate of impeccably looking potato strips to the dining table. He sat quietly in a corner seat at the table, silently waiting for the others.
Cheng Nuo’s chicken chunks weren’t ready yet. He couldn’t stand in the kitchen occupying space forever, so he also went into the living room first to make room for others.
He had calculated the heat and time; fifteen minutes should be just right.
But no one expected that seven minutes later, a faint smell of burning would start to ferment from the pot.
By the time someone realized something seemed to be burning and lifted Cheng Nuo’s pot lid, they discovered a mass of scorched yellow substance, emitting a choking smell, hideously huddled together in the pot.
The curry on top, which hadn’t completely dried out yet, was still bubbling unwillingly.
Cheng Nuo’s heart sank. He ran quickly to the kitchen, but unfortunately, it was beyond saving.
The others also gathered around to watch the spectacle. As they looked at each other, before anyone could say words of regret to relieve Cheng Nuo’s embarrassment, Xiao Ji leaned against the kitchen side and said faintly:
“You made a big fuss for so long just to cook a pot of shit?”
Everyone’s gaze instantly shifted to Xiao Ji.
Gu Yao wanted to laugh but didn’t dare. She rubbed her cheek and suggested:
“Ah-Ji… sometimes, some things can just be thought in your heart; they don’t necessarily have to be said out loud…”
Xiao Ji gave an “Oh” upon hearing this and said without much sincerity, “Excuse me.”
Cheng Nuo was extremely embarrassed at this moment. Standing by the pot, he was just planning to dump this pot of stuff when the program team’s broadcast suddenly sounded again:
“Regardless of the result, the process is everyone’s greatest harvest. Guests, please place your works on the dining table. We will take a group photo later, please don’t fall behind.”
Cheng Nuo: “…”
Helpless, Cheng Nuo could only bite the bullet, shovel that pile of terrible substance from the bottom of the pot, put it on a plate, and bring it to the dining table.
Half an hour later, when everyone had presented their culinary skills on the dining table, the atmosphere once again fell into a very awkward state.
Zhao Jiatong was a warm-hearted young man. Seeing the situation, he comforted, “Brother Cheng, we all believe this must be an accident. Please perform well next time.”
The crowd echoed, saying things like “it doesn’t matter,” “it’s fine,” and “don’t take it to heart”—pleasant sounding words.
Only Xiao Ji, after everyone finished speaking, added a sentence:
“Next time, make soup. If it’s going to be equally disgusting, at least it won’t look so dry and shriveled.”
Gu Yao sat opposite Xiao Ji. Covering her mouth, she couldn’t help but kick Xiao Ji under the table, trying to remind him to stop talking because she was about to burst out laughing.
Everyone had different expressions. Although they knew it wasn’t kind, when certain things happen and certain words are spoken, it’s very hard to control one’s emotions.
Thus, at this moment, everyone exerted their lifelong acting skills, thinking of the saddest things they had experienced in their lives, to prevent themselves from breaking character and making Cheng Nuo even more embarrassed.
Cheng Nuo was thoroughly annoyed with Xiao Ji now, wishing he could sew his mouth shut with a needle and thread.
He didn’t understand what Fang Yinnian was thinking. Why, after being ascetic for so many years, did he lose his head for a thing like Xiao Ji?
But soon, he understood the reason.
Because just as everyone had held back enough and was preparing to pick up their chopsticks nonchalantly to start eating, another person suddenly walked in from outside.
Shirt and dress pants, tall with long legs, an extraordinary temperament, carrying a black suitcase in his hand.
At the same time, the broadcast sounded again:
“Life is always full of accidents and surprises, and fate always meets unexpectedly. Please welcome the new member.”
Except for Xiao Ji, no one else, including Cheng Nuo, reacted immediately.
Xiao Ji and Fang Yinnian’s eyes met. Xiao Ji raised his eyebrows slightly and stood up.
Fang Yinnian walked briskly to the dining table, tossed his suitcase aside casually, and sat in the last empty seat next to Xiao Ji.
He didn’t speak to Xiao Ji but focused his gaze on the table full of colorful dishes. Just as he was about to pick up his chopsticks, he saw Cheng Nuo’s curry chicken chunks.
Fang Yinnian hadn’t intended to be special, but he had urgent matters at hand. According to the plan, he should have finished tomorrow, but fortunately, Fang Yinnian’s sister took over the matter temporarily, allowing him to free up time and rush to the crew without stopping.
He hadn’t eaten a bite from yesterday noon until now. He was starving, his chest sticking to his back. Just happening to arrive at mealtime, he was preparing to eat first and talk later when he saw that plate of filth.
Fang Yinnian immediately became unhappy. putting down his chopsticks, he frowned and asked:
“Why is there shit on the table? Who did this?”
