Chapter 22: Job Transfer
Early morning.
Summer days dawned early. It was only 4:30 AM, but the sky outside was already a sheet of white.
Wen Yan woke up, endured his headache to check the time, and closed his eyes to force himself back to sleep.
Last night was the first time in so long that Gu Yulan appeared in his dreams.
The scene was the twelve-hour journey home.
Gu Yulan parked at a highway service station to rest, chatting with him and telling him not to worry. After thanking him, Wen Yan looked up. The originally white sky suddenly turned black. Gu Yulan’s face changed again and again, turning into a green-faced, fanged monster. He froze in place, afraid to move. Suddenly, someone grabbed his hand to flee, with the ghost chasing closely behind.
A bizarre and illogical dream. Wen Yan muttered a complaint to himself, suddenly realizing his voice was hoarse.
Wen Yan lifted his arm and laid it across his eyes. Even when staying up late to rush projects and sleeping in before, he had never felt this exhausted, with a splitting headache.
His head hurt too much.
Half-dreaming, half-awake until 7:30, the phone ringtone rang before the alarm clock.
Wen Yan grabbed the phone and pressed answer. Gu Yulan’s voice rang out.
“Yan-yan, I’ll be downstairs at eight to pick you up.”
Wen Yan didn’t react for a moment. He asked hoarsely, “Pick me up for what?”
“Pick you up for breakfast, then take you to work.”
Wen Yan was silent for a while before finally agreeing.
After packing everything, Wen Yan’s gaze fell on the bowl of wontons on the living room table. He picked up the bag containing the plastic box and threw it into the trash can.
When Gu Yulan arrived, he happened to see Wen Yan throwing the trash bag into the bin.
He had a smile on his face. “Yan-yan, which breakfast place do you want to eat at?”
Under the morning light, the young man’s skin was fair, his nose bridge narrow and straight, lips red and teeth white. The dark circles under his eyes were somewhat obvious, revealing a cold sense of alienation.
This indifferent temperament was more like the rumored Wen Yan, the center of the crowd favored and pursued by everyone.
“I’m not hungry. Go directly to the company.” Wen Yan had a headache again, frowning slightly.
Gu Yulan still packed a breakfast from a breakfast shop and handed it to the person in the passenger seat.
He glanced sideways and was amazed again.
Wen Yan probably didn’t sleep well last night. At this moment, he closed his eyes to catch up on sleep again. His long eyelashes cast a shadow under his eyes, and the whole person looked like a piece of flawless cold jade.
No wonder he was the “High Mountain Flower.” Even knowing it was hard to get close or walk into his heart, so many people still chased him like moths to a flame.
Traffic was heavy on the road. Wen Yan was almost late arriving at the company, and his already depressed mood became even more irritable.
He didn’t have time to eat breakfast, and it had gone cold. He felt a bit nauseous, so in the end, he didn’t eat it.
He felt dizzy and groggy.
Not long after starting work, when he was called to Pei Zhouye’s office, Wen Yan kept a cold face, his voice chilling. “Hello, President Pei. May I ask what the matter is?”
Pei Zhouye wanted to say something, but paused when he looked up, asking, “Are you sick?”
“No,” Wen Yan answered without thinking.
Pei Zhouye looked at his obviously incorrect state, his face darkening. “No need to come in today. Take leave and go to the hospital.”
Wen Yan became impatient. The headache and the discomfort of an empty stomach, combined with Pei Zhouye’s attitude, annoyed him even more. “I’m not sick. It won’t affect my work. I don’t want to skip work without reason. If you really want me to rest well, just approve my resignation application.”
He really couldn’t stand working this job for another day! It was annoying not being able to do what he should do every day, annoying trying to find ways to participate in projects, and even more annoying seeing Pei Zhouye’s face every day!
Even though it was a face one couldn’t pick flaws in, Wen Yan insisted on mentally arranging a few complaints about him.
He was flashy and loved to flaunt his wealth, wearing different suits every day.
Pei Zhouye didn’t know what Wen Yan was thinking. Seeing Wen Yan’s pale face as he gritted his teeth and turned his head away in a sulk, he relented irritably.
“Go see a doctor. I agree to transfer you to the 10th floor. For the next few weeks, you can work with the others.”
Wen Yan had prepared himself to hear Pei Zhouye’s threats again. The moment he realized what was said, his cold expression loosened, and a smile appeared in his light-colored eyes.
“Transfer me first, then I’ll go.” His tone carried a note of negotiation.
Seeing Wen Yan instantly becoming pleasant towards him, Pei Zhouye laughed in anger. “Fine.”
“But you have to send me a photo of you seeing the doctor to report in.”
A trivial request. Wen Yan agreed with a smile. “Okay. Thank you, President Pei.”
This was the first time he walked out of Pei Zhouye’s office with a smile. His physical discomfort seemed to alleviate a lot, and he happily packed his things to move to the 10th floor.
When he received the specific location message from the system, the fatigue on his body completely lightened.
He was in the same department as Duan Mingtao.
When he moved in with his things, some people looked over. Wen Yan had become accustomed to this kind of gaze recently and didn’t notice anything wrong this time.
Passing by Duan Mingtao, he curved his eyes in a smile, then realized something.
The workspace of the person wearing rimless glasses who argued with him yesterday was empty.
He had a vague guess in his heart.
At noon, Wen Yan went to the cafeteria with Duan Mingtao. He pretended to mention this person casually.
Looking at Duan Mingtao’s expression, Wen Yan’s Adam’s apple bobbed. His acting just now must have been very clumsy.
Fortunately, Duan Mingtao didn’t expose him, only looking down at his phone.
After a while, Duan Mingtao handed the phone to him.
It was a lawyer’s letter and a public notice.
[The company discovered that intern XXX (ID: XXX) published and spread false information about President Pei Zhouye, suspected of malicious rumors and slander, seriously damaging the company’s image and personal reputation…]
Wen Yan was stunned for a while. He wasn’t that familiar with the law, but he knew the difference between slander and personal reputation.
Pei Zhouye sued for slander, which also counted as clarifying the rumors between them.
A message popped up at the top of the phone. Wen Yan looked subconsciously; it was from Wu Qingqing.
“Sorry.”
He apologized immediately. He didn’t mean to look at others’ privacy.
“It’s okay.” Duan Mingtao drank a mouthful of beverage unnaturally. “He used the company intranet to spread rumors before. The evidence was investigated very quickly, and he has been fired.”
Wen Yan didn’t know if he was overthinking, but that person had just quarreled with him yesterday afternoon, and after only one night, he was sent a lawyer’s letter and fired, while Wen Yan was transferred to the 10th floor. It was hard not to guess if it was related to him.
Duan Mingtao didn’t know why, but suddenly he spoke more than usual. “Now some people say you are a rich second generation experiencing life.”
Wen Yan’s train of thought was interrupted, and he shook his head helplessly.
Not only was he not a rich second generation, but he was also a “negative second generation” owing two million.
Pei Zhouye checked his phone countless times all morning, but didn’t receive a single message he wanted. His face was black.
It wasn’t until the lunch break that he received a picture and a message.
[Wen Yan: President Pei, thank you.]
Below was a picture of medicine in a delivery bag.
Pei Zhouye snorted coldly in anger.
Wen Yan was really something, using delivery medicine to patronize him.
