Chapter 15: Added as a Friend
Looking at the comment section tearing itself apart on the trending search, Shen Yanjin found it both speechless and funny that the high ground was ultimately occupied by CP fans of him and Duan Mingyue.
Five years ago, he resolutely went to Cloud City and joined Team HG, finally standing on the same competitive stage as Duan Mingyue. He had tried several times to explain things to Duan Mingyue, but every time he saw the man’s face, he would recall that conversation from back then.
Be sensible.
So he shrank back, even secretly hoping Duan Mingyue would never know he once had the ID YanGold, and just think of him as Sliver.
This way, he could pretend nothing had happened and approach Duan Mingyue anew.
That was the plan, but in reality, over these five years, he hadn’t even added Duan Mingyue’s contact information. Their only interaction was limited to the handshake after each match.
Wow, free handshake event.
Duan Mingyue’s fans must be dying of envy.
Shen Yanjin smiled self-mockingly.
He never expected that a random RANK match after retiring would lead to so many things.
Maybe he and Duan Mingyue were just destined for an online romance?
Shen Yanjin couldn’t be sure if the “interested” Duan Mingyue mentioned in the live stream meant the same thing he was thinking. After browsing the comment section for a long time and agonizing over it alone, he finally decided to give up thinking.
The next day, Shen Yanjin woke up early and carefully read through the documents the doctor gave him.
After reading, he silently put the documents away and placed them back in the drawer.
The surgery only had a twenty percent success rate, not even a quarter.
Shen Yanjin had stumbled all along the way and never believed in his own luck; he would only consider the worst outcome in everything.
Now, all he could see was the eighty percent failure rate, and himself unable to return to the arena ever again after a failed surgery.
Although he knew he couldn’t drag it out any longer, Shen Yanjin still subconsciously chose to escape, pushing this choice back and leaving it to his future self.
He rubbed his brow and turned on the computer.
Speaking of which, he couldn’t blame others for mistaking him for a woman. As long as someone paid a little attention, they would find that this UOOW account not only exclusively played Support, but only filled Mid lane when auto-filled, and the skins, avatar, and avatar frame were all candy-colored.
Plus, when he spoke, he intentionally sounded sarcastic, and threw in kaomojis and tildes whenever he could; he looked even more like a female player.
These details were opposite to his YanGold and Sliver personas in every way.
Five years was enough to mold something long into flat, something square into round.
The once proud and solitary “King of Passersby” had also started playing the role of a support little sister calling people “Brother” to coax teammate “sons.”
Shen Yanjin brushed his hair back, opened the client, and logged into the account.
“Ding-dong!”
He hadn’t plugged in his headphones. Just as he entered the game, a crisp notification sound popped out from the laptop, loud and clear.
Shen Yanjin looked hesitantly and discovered a friend request notification in the upper right corner.
He froze, staring at that glaring little red dot, unable to react for a long time.
Because he found it troublesome and was too lazy to add random teammates, Shen Yanjin had always set this smurf account to automatically reject friend requests.
Except for one person.
KW-RedMoon.
Shen Yanjin made this setting, but saying he never expected to receive a friend request notification would be absolutely false. It was just that this hope was too slim, so slim that even he himself had almost forgotten it.
But now…
He unconsciously licked his lips and poked that little red dot.
Duan Mingyue’s game ID lay quietly in his request list, just like five years ago when he beat Shen Yanjin, then teamed up and said with a smile that he would carry him to rank up.
Five years, over one thousand eight hundred days. Shen Yanjin had waited for this day to come again for far too long. The slim hope turning into reality was like a spark landing on dry grass, instantly igniting a monstrous wave of fire.
He didn’t click agree immediately. Instead, he checked his profile and career history from beginning to end, ensuring not a single detail would reveal the fact that he was a man. Only then did he let out a breath and solemnly accept Duan Mingyue’s friend request.
At this time, according to the past, Duan Mingyue should be in a training match or practicing on his own.
Unexpectedly, as soon as the friend request was accepted, Shen Yanjin received a message.
[KW-RedMoon: ^^]
[KW-RedMoon: Hello.]
Shen Yanjin instantly felt his heart was about to jump out of his throat.
He typed and deleted, typed and deleted, repeating this back and forth for nearly ten minutes. Finally, hesitating and agonizing, he sent out a standard “Hello.”
Thinking about what happened before, he thought for a moment and added a few more lines.
[UOOW: Sorry, Moon God (T▽T) I really didn’t know it was you before.]
[UOOW: And I even got you on the trending search. I am guilty T^T Kowtowing bang bang bang!]
Duan Mingyue looked at the kaomojis sent from the other side. Reading between the lines, it looked like a young girl no matter how he looked at it.
He lowered his head and smiled.
He had watched the recording of the first time he matched with UOOW nearly ten times.
The mechanics, the game sense, and that wordless tacit understanding as if they had coordinated thousands of times before… It made him uncontrollably recall that little support YanGold from five years ago.
But, even if it was him, so what?
Duan Mingyue couldn’t explain it clearly himself.
He raised his hand and typed.
[KW-RedMoon: Duo queue?]
