Chapter 22: Mic Fixed
The day after physical therapy ended, Shen Yanjin’s sound card finally arrived.
He opened the shop that had previously promised to tune him a “cute girl voice even mom can’t recognize,” typing to ask customer service: There? Can tune now?
The shop owner seemed to have listed Shen Yanjin as a key gullible customer, replying instantly: Here here, has the boss’s sound card arrived?
Shen Yanjin said: Yes, I sent you the brand and model.
The shop owner said: Okay okay, please connect the sound card and accept our shop’s remote connection for adjustment haha.
Shen Yanjin said: En, need me to do anything?
The shop owner said: To ensure the voice changer effect, please wait a moment in front of the microphone, boss. Our tuning master needs to tune based on your voice haha.
Shen Yanjin agreed.
Shortly after, a remote connection request popped up. He clicked accept. Soon, the sound card settings interface appeared on the computer.
Shop owner message popped up: Boss there? Please connect the microphone to the sound card, then turn it on and say a few words.
Shen Yanjin put down his phone, leaning close to the microphone: “Hello? Can you hear me? …Is this okay?”
The shop owner sent an OK emoji: Boss, what kind of cute girl voice do you need? Sweet kind or coquettish kind?
Shen Yanjin really hadn’t carefully considered this matter. He frowned and asked: Is there any difference between the two?
The shop owner sent two voice messages: The top one has more sweetness, the bottom one has more coquettishness.
Shen Yanjin curiously opened them.
Then closed them with goosebumps all over his body and scalp tingling.
Just listening to the voice, he felt he was committing a crime.
More importantly, no matter how Shen Yanjin listened, he felt the two had no difference except one had fewer tildes and one had more.
He was silent for a while, saying: Forget it, just give me a normal one.
The shop owner understood: Alright!
So the debugging work began.
Indeed, you get what you pay for. The tuning master did the job extremely meticulously, asking Shen Yanjin to speak a few sentences to hear the effect whenever free.
Half an hour later, the master finished work, turning on headphone monitoring for him, then disconnected the remote connection.
The shop owner said: Boss, done. Listen to the effect yourself.
“Hello? Can you hear me?”
Shen Yanjin spoke, then stopped abruptly.
The female voice in the headphones was soft and sticky, sounding like a young girl. Although also cute, it wasn’t as cloying as “sweet” and “coquettish,” only making people feel very cute and pitiable.
Shen Yanjin spoke a few more sentences. After confirming the effect, he opened the product interface. On the basis of the previous two hundred deposit, he transferred another eight hundred over.
The shop owner sent a rose emoji: Thanks boss~ Wishing boss a smooth online romance!!! Mwah!
Shen Yanjin’s hand slipped, almost dropping the phone.
Online romance… online… he wasn’t doing this for online romance! It was to enter KW! For dreams, fighting for the future of the competition region!
It was a legitimate use!
Shen Yanjin righteously opened the WL client and opened the friends list.
KW-RedMoon was online.
He opened the chat box, saying a bit shyly: Moon God, my mic is fixed, can we duo queue?
Duan Mingyue was making up streaming hours, playing maintenance games in passing to ensure his ranking remained stable at number one on the leaderboard.
Hearing the message notification tone, his eyelids moved. He unobtrusively covered his game interface, ensuring people in the stream room couldn’t see his chat box, before opening the message notification.
[UOOW: Moon God, my mic is fixed, can we duo queue?]
[KW-RedMoon: Sure.]
[KW-RedMoon: Wait a bit.]
Duan Mingyue canceled the queue and exited the client.
He switched back to the stream room: “Sorry, something came up temporarily, turning off stream first, see you next time.”
[?????]
[So sudden? Didn’t we agree to stay up late ranking up today?]
[I seriously suspect that message caused trouble.]
[Right! And didn’t let us see. What’s going on, Moon God has little secrets fans can’t know.]
[I have a bold guess, could it be Moon-U really hasn’t fallen.]
[Don’t sister, if the Moon you’re talking about is that Moon Steed then maybe, Moon God forget it.]
Duan Mingyue glanced at the bullet screen, smiled, didn’t say much. After apologizing a few sentences to fans and promising next time for sure, he ruthlessly closed the stream room.
Then switched accounts.
Shen Yanjin soon received a team invite from Moon Steed.
He nervously adjusted the microphone.
Duan Mingyue pulled him into the voice channel and smiled: “UOOW rejected your friend request… Your account setting is auto-reject friends?”
Shen Yanjin reacted, hurriedly saying: “Ah right, I forgot to change it. Sorry Moon God, I’ll add you.”
Duan Mingyue paused: “This voice of yours…”
Shen Yanjin’s heart tightened.
“Sounds quite tender.” Duan Mingyue said with a smile, “Little sister, are you of age?”
Shen Yanjin relaxed: “En, of course.”
He was actually a bit afraid Duan Mingyue would bring up the matter of him saying he would call him “Brother” before, holding his breath and daring not to let go.
Fortunately, Duan Mingyue didn’t play such bad tricks, only saying: “A bit unexpected ah. The way you speak is quite different from your typing style.”
That was for sure. Shen Yanjin had rich experience in typing performances, but using a voice changer was a first.
He stammered: “Re-really? Because I’m a bit shy with strangers…”
After speaking, feeling this reason was really unjustifiable, he covered his face to remedy: “No, Moon God, I… you queue!”
Duan Mingyue suppressed a laugh: “Okay, I’m queueing.”
Both had things on their minds. One intentionally showed off himself, the other observed and considered. Back and forth, they reached the same destination by different routes.
Entering the selection interface, Shen Yanjin adjusted his headphones saying: “Moon God, what support should I pick?”
Duan Mingyue wanted to say “up to you,” but swallowed it back. He scanned the support interface, saying seemingly unintentionally: “Can you play Mermaid?”
“Yes!”
Shen Yanjin didn’t hesitate, insta-picking Mermaid.
On the game interface, the pale red little mermaid curled her tail at him with a smile.
This character as a support was neither soft nor hard. Saying she was a protective support, her only protection skill was a water wall used to separate allies and enemies. This skill sounded nice, but in practice, not only could it disrupt ally attack rhythm, it might also repay kindness with enmity, saving the enemy’s life.
Saying she was a control support, the control was too weak, almost entirely slow effects. The only knock-up control was an extremely slow projectile effect; by the time the skill arrived, the person would have run away long ago.
So, Mermaid’s status in the support world could be said to be at the bottom without exaggeration.
Duan Mingyue picked Ascetic Monk jungle, high damage, low control.
Seeing teammates getting restless, seeming ready to have a friendly interaction with him, Shen Yanjin hurriedly preempted.
[UOOW: I am an internet princess, bringing my own Jungle King. Guaranteed win if not feeding, thanks thanks.]
Duan Mingyue was drinking water. Seeing him type, he almost choked.
He couldn’t help smiling: “So self-aware?”
Shen Yanjin was a bit embarrassed: “I was afraid they’d say something, so I just said it myself first.”
Duan Mingyue said lightly: “If they say anything about you, the responsibility is also mine. I made you pick Mermaid… Blame me?”
Shen Yanjin smiled: “How could I blame you? I just happened to want to play it too so I picked it.”
Mermaid this thing, people would want to play it? Isn’t that torturing oneself, looking for unhappiness intentionally?
Duan Mingyue curved his lips, not exposing him.
But seeing in the chat box, after Shen Yanjin sent that sentence, teammates didn’t show the expected sarcastic reaction, instead spamming exclamation marks.
[[Team] Catball Streaming Yu Xiaoqin: !!! This is UOOW herself??]
[[Team] Catball Streaming Yu Xiaoqin: Hard work pays off, I finally camped her.]
Shen Yanjin didn’t react.
What did “camped her” mean… what did “herself” mean? What did this mean?
[[Team] Xingyu Streaming Wanzi: Dying of laughter, hello Little Qin.]
[[Team] Volcano Little God King: ? Never thought I’d meet so many peers in a Diamond game to this day.]
[[Team] Xingyu Streaming Wanzi: Hello, Jungle King there? Say something?]
Shen Yanjin was confused. The whole team were streamers? Was he queuing for a Diamond game?
“Oh, forgot to mention.” Duan Mingyue’s voice carried a bit of teasing laughter. “Didn’t we meet Kai when duo-queueing before? This guy did a one-hour free promotion for you. Now a bunch of people are waiting to snipe our duo car. If I guessed correctly, the opponents should also all be streamers.”
Shen Yanjin said with difficulty: “All… streamers?”
Duan Mingyue suppressed a laugh: “En, so the actual rank tier is at least Master.”
Shen Yanjin went numb.
He looked at the still smiling little mermaid on the screen, his heart cooling by half.
Thinking it was a Diamond game, it didn’t matter what sewer support he picked; he could show off either way.
Result was the rank tier suddenly pulled up, pulling him directly to Master?
Even in Diamond tier, bringing out Mermaid was like performing, let alone Master.
Shen Yanjin wiped his face, smiling reluctantly: “I will work hard.”
