Chapter 39: Stalking
Jiang Yunian stared at the screen and sucked in a cold breath; a chill shot up his spine, making his hair stand on end.
“What’s wrong with you?”
Hao Meng next to him turned her head, noticing his slightly trembling shoulders. “What did you see that’s so scary?”
“No… nothing, a scary image popped up suddenly, gave me a fright.” Jiang Yunian’s voice trembled slightly as he subconsciously flipped his phone face down.
Hao Meng muttered, thinking it was nothing. These days, people still play such childish pranks, they must have too much time on their hands.
But Jiang Yunian couldn’t calm down, unease surfacing in his heart.
[Nian Nian You Yu: Who are you? Why are you following me?]
Who exactly was this LG? And why take these photos? These questions tangled into a chaotic mess in his mind, pressing tight against his nerves.
Judging from the previous chat history, he was certain the other party was a girl in the same city, maybe even the same university. But he knew very few girls, and those with “emotional entanglements” were even fewer. Aside from Tao Jingxuan introduced by Hao Meng, there was almost no one else. Obviously, it wasn’t her; Tao Jingxuan didn’t have those kinds of thoughts about him, nor did she need to do this.
Then who could it be?
Jiang Yunian thought hard, going through everyone with even a tiny possibility in his mind. Just as he was at his wits’ end, a notification from Jiang Yan popped up at the top of the screen.
Looking at Jiang Yan’s avatar, a flash of inspiration struck his brain, thinking of another possibility. Maybe the other party wasn’t necessarily targeting him, but targeting the people around him.
Could it be Fang Xiaolin?
Did she misunderstand his relationship with Jiang Yan, so she approached under false pretenses to seek revenge?
This guess felt ridiculous even to Jiang Yunian, but it wasn’t completely impossible.
[A-Yan: Did you eat breakfast?]
[Nian Nian You Yu: Yeah.]
[A-Yan: Good, class is starting]
[Nian Nian You Yu: Wait a minute, I have a question to ask you]
Over ten seconds later, Jiang Yan sent a question mark.
[Nian Nian You Yu: Are you still in contact with your female deskmate from before?]
[A-Yan: Why ask this suddenly?]
[Nian Nian You Yu: Oh, I ran into her on the street. Didn’t she like you before? How is she now?]
[A-Yan: Seems she has a boyfriend]
[A-Yan: Not me]
So it wasn’t her.
Soon, he became even more certain it wasn’t Fang Xiaolin.
[LG: I am your husband (Laogong)]
[LG: Of course I like Wifey]
LG… Laogong? Jiang Yunian was stunned, then realization dawned.
[Nian Nian You Yu: You’re a guy?]
[LG: What? Wifey thought I was a girl?]
Jiang Yunian could almost imagine the other party’s expression, laughing at being amused by him.
Unbridled.
So it was premeditated from the start. LG was no different from those gay men fantasizing about him. Why didn’t he think of it? Someone calling him “Wifey” wasn’t necessarily a girl, but could also be a pervert in female fan’s skin! No wonder he always said ambiguous and explicit things; in reality, every sentence was a sexual suggestion directed at him.
Thinking back on those comments and chat logs now, Jiang Yunian felt a wave of nausea.
He had always behaved himself; how did he attract such a pervert?
It was too absurd.
Fighting back his discomfort, Jiang Yunian clicked into LG’s homepage. The originally empty throwaway account now had its first Weibo post:
My dear, I am watching you.
On the other side, Jiang Yan sat alone in a corner where light and shadow intertwined, the cool, quiet light reflecting on his gloomy face, plating it with frost.
On the other end of Weibo, paranoia had set in.
[Nian Nian You Yu: Who on earth are you? Do we know each other?]
[Nian Nian You Yu: What you saw isn’t necessarily real, they are just my friends]
[Nian Nian You Yu: Also, I am not gay. Stop this behavior immediately, otherwise don’t blame me for being impolite]
Jiang Yan looked at these messages, the corners of his mouth ticking up slightly, eyes shining with a morbid obsession. He replied unhurriedly:
[LG: Oh?]
[LG: Is Wifey saying you didn’t hug a woman? Or saying you haven’t been touched by a man?]
Jiang Yunian froze slightly, unconsciously thinking of that stolen first kiss that night, the entangled breaths, Jiang Yan’s body temperature when they comforted each other… his cheeks burned inexplicably.
[LG: Heh, liar]
[LG: Mouth won’t admit it, but actually your body enjoyed it, right? The taste of embracing men and hugging women]
[LG: Those who touched you really deserve to die]
[LG: But who asked me to like Wifey? Be with me, and I’ll let them go]
[Nian Nian You Yu: Don’t even think about it, it’s impossible for me to be with you]
[LG: Fine, if Wifey won’t be with me, I have to find someone else]
[LG: How about your brother?]
Jiang Yunian’s pupils constricted. This pervert…
[Nian Nian You Yu: Stop dreaming, he won’t like you]
[LG: How do you know without trying? He looks like my type. Never dated, right? This kind of little virgin is the easiest to trick]
As if hit by the mark again, the other party didn’t reply for five minutes.
[LG: Wifey better think clearly, my patience is limited]
The other party still didn’t reply. Jiang Yan waited with a bit of impatience. When he clicked send again, a cold prompt popped up on the screen:
He had been blocked by the user.
Jiang Yan chuckled. His Ge’s courage was still so small.
The journey home from school became exceptionally long. Jiang Yunian walked very lightly, constantly looking around, scanning the pedestrians on the road, the flower beds by the street, the billboard of the convenience store…
After walking a long way and finding no suspicious people, the naturally falling leaves by the roadside seemed to mock his paranoia.
Jiang Yunian’s nervous expression relaxed slightly.
The phone in his pocket began to buzz again. Jiang Yunian’s footsteps stopped, his heartbeat accelerating gradually.
Holding his breath, he slowly pulled out his phone. The top of the screen showed a strange number, and a line of text jumped out in the preview box:
[Looking for me?]
Strong unease warned him even before he clicked it open.
[I’ve been watching you all along, Wifey]
[Very good today, didn’t let those unclean people touch you. Really want to hug you right now and reward Wifey with the hottest kiss]
The lines exuded a weird ambiguity; it couldn’t be anyone other than “LG”.
He blocked him, yet this person still lingered like a ghost! Jiang Yunian’s hand holding the phone trembled slightly. He suddenly realized that this person might have already mastered all his information. No matter if he deleted or blocked, they would change methods to continue entangling him.
He couldn’t shake him off at all!
Jiang Yunian turned his head, looking around neurotically. People were coming and going all around—commuters getting off work, students finishing school, walking hurriedly in their own lanes. Instead, his appearance of a startled bird attracted several confused glances, raising his vigilance.
[You’re also from Nandah University?]
[If you follow me again, I’ll call the police!]
After sending the message, Jiang Yunian’s hand remained frozen in mid-air in the typing posture. A rustling sound came from behind. He spun around violently, but only saw birds flying from the bushes, not the figure hiding in the dark he had imagined.
[Just praised Wifey, and now you’re being naughty again. Disobedience gets punished by Hubby]
Jiang Yunian’s heart beat fast, almost immediately opening his contacts to type 110.
[Call the police? Go ahead. But before that, you might want to think… what would happen if everyone knew about the things you and your brother did in the school toilet?]
[You can react even to your brother, looks like you can accept men after all]
Jiang Yunian’s hand, about to press the dial button, paused. His breath seemed frozen instantly. He stared at that line of words, every character piercing into his unbelieving eyeballs, a dense, sharp pain.
This person had been targeting him far longer than he thought. Who was he exactly? How many “handles” that he didn’t know about did he hold?
The incident with Zhang Hao before, those pointing fingers, the feeling of gossip-mongering stabbing at him was still fresh in his memory. If this also… He didn’t dare to imagine what kind of earth-shattering devastation would happen to his and Jiang Yan’s lives.
The cold wind howled past. Under his stiff shell, fear and unease filled his heart chamber. He loathed the other party treating him like a clown to be played with, and regretted being possessed by a ghost back then, indulging Jiang Yan to do as he pleased, even sinking into it himself, unable to resist.
He typed with shaking hands: [It’s not what you think between me and him, really! We are just brothers, nothing more. Don’t act recklessly]
Jiang Yan found the word “brothers” extremely dazzling. His reply carried cold ridicule.
[You treat him as a brother, what about your brother? If he knew you hugged a woman one moment and a man the next, would he still treat you as a brother?]
[When you did it with him, dare you say you didn’t like him even a little bit?]
Jiang Yunian stood dazed on the spot, cold wind hitting his body, numbing his nerves.
He wasn’t gay, he was sure. But whenever Jiang Yan approached, hugged him, touched him, kissed him, even helped him… he wasn’t disgusted, wasn’t nauseated, didn’t reject it, but…
But what?
[If you don’t want people to know, then listen obediently]
Jiang Yunian’s heart was in chaos, completely passive. [What exactly do you want?]
[Don’t be nervous, I won’t hurt Wifey, I’ll only love you properly]
[After all, we are a match made in heaven]
[Of course, you can call the police, but you won’t want to know the consequences]
Jiang Yunian felt cold all over. The icy phone pressed against his palm, freezing him so much he wanted to throw it away, but he couldn’t. He pressed the phone to his chest, wanting to suppress the panic in his heart, but his delicate brows furrowed tighter and tighter, his thin body teetering in the cold wind, unbearably frail.
“Ah…”
His shoulder was suddenly patted from behind. Jiang Yunian lost focus and nearly twisted his ankle. A large hand with well-defined joints slipped around his waist, easily pulling him back to stand steady.
“Can’t even walk steadily?” A familiar voice sounded in his ear, carrying a hint of helplessness. That hand slid down, holding his bony wrist, rubbing it lightly. “So thin you’ll fall over if the wind blows.”
It was Jiang Yan.
Seeing it was him, Jiang Yunian breathed a sigh of relief, but immediately thinking that the person spying on him might be watching, fear invaded him again. He reacted strongly, throwing off the hand wrapped around his waist.
The sudden rejection stunned Jiang Yan. The brightened eyes turned downcast as he slowly lowered his empty hand.
“Is Ge still angry about last night?” He lowered his brow, bangs covering his eyes a little, voice a bit muffled. “I wasn’t very clear-headed then.”
Compared to the unknown fear, Jiang Yan’s loss of control last night became insignificant. Jiang Yunian’s mind was messy now; he didn’t know how to explain to him.
Passersby on the street noticed the two pulling and pushing, casting strange glances. On the main road, with people coming and going, it obviously wasn’t a place to talk. Moreover, there was a pair of monitoring eyes hiding in the dark.
Jiang Yunian could only say dryly that he wasn’t angry, it wasn’t because of him, don’t overthink it.
Jiang Yan swept over his pale little face, keenly capturing that unease. He stepped half a pace closer, asking with concern, “Your complexion is so bad, did you encounter something?”
As he spoke, he reached out to check the temperature of his forehead. Just as he raised his hand, the other turned sideways to dodge. The dodging motion was too fast; the hand stopped in mid-air, slightly awkward. After a long while, he slowly curled his fingers and took it back.
Jiang Yunian shook his head, looking left and right, not daring to say much. “Let’s go home first.”
Along the way, he deliberately kept a certain distance from Jiang Yan—neither intimate nor distant.
Behind him, separated by the distance of two fists, Jiang Yan walked quietly.
Those bottomless eyes silently traced the outline of that tense profile in the twilight, then he blinked, his long eyelashes casting a shadow.
