Chapter 31
The scenes within the Survival War were all authentic recreations of the Interstellar War from centuries ago. Now that the great war had ended, these scenes were constructed specifically to remind students not to forget the pain brought by war.
A ringing sound came from the transfer room, signaling that they had reached their destination. Chi Yanxun didn’t open the door immediately but said in a deep voice, “After we open the door and go out, we cannot let our guard down for a single moment.”
When he said the words “let our guard down,” his gaze lingered on Shen Shuyu for a few seconds.
Shen Shuyu blinked, pretending not to hear Chi Yanxun’s implication, nodded, and said with utmost sincerity: “Rest assured, Brother Yanxun, I definitely won’t drag you down!”
His gaze briskly swept over the others. Except for Wen Jiafei and Shen Xili, the other two were looking at him. They were from the neighboring department. Shen Shuyu could be considered a celebrity within the academy, so they had naturally heard of his deeds, but it was limited to hearsay. Rumor had it that Shen Shuyu was Chi Yanxun’s all-around simp; wherever Chi Yanxun was, Shen Shuyu was sure to be found. Previously, they thought people on the academy forum were exaggerating, but they didn’t expect to see a live example today.
Lin Xuyi and He Mingyue exchanged glances and then looked away.
Only then did Chi Yanxun push open the door of the transfer room.
Each team’s transfer room led to a different location. When Chi Yanxun pushed open the door, he saw that the visibility outside was probably only twenty meters.
They were surrounded by dense fog. Even with diligent effort, one could only vaguely see the trees hidden behind the fog.
“It’s actually the Misty Forest.” He Mingyue walked out second. Standing shoulder to shoulder with Chi Yanxun, he observed the surroundings but found nothing due to the low visibility.
In previous Survival Wars, the Misty Forest had been voted the most troublesome starting point. Not because it was particularly dangerous, but because one couldn’t see anything. Moreover, after entering the Misty Forest, all direction-finding instruments, including compasses, would malfunction. Finding the way out relied entirely on one’s own exploration. They also had to prevent team members from getting separated; different exits led to different locations, and stragglers could easily be eliminated by other teams.
More importantly, some resources had to be snatched early on. The more time consumed in the Misty Forest, the more disadvantageous it would be for them.
Furthermore, they had been given a strict order upon arrival: they must take first place.
Lin Xuyi fished a compass out of his bag and took a look: “Sure enough, the compass isn’t working.”
Following closely were Shen Xili and Wen Jiafei walking out of the transfer room. Shen Shuyu wasn’t in a hurry. While everyone was clustered at the transfer door, he deftly took out two heavy backpacks from his spatial necklace. He knew this spatial necklace would become useless once he exited the transfer door, and the things inside wouldn’t be accessible.
Shen Shuyu had prepared quite a lot of things for this Survival War, both useful and useless. After all, once the troublemaking plot was over, they still had to join hands to clear the levels.
The sound of him placing the backpacks was overly loud. Two thuds attracted the attention of the six people standing at the door.
Chi Yanxun still frowned: “What are you doing?”
Shen Shuyu immediately put on a wronged expression: “I just remembered I brought a rope and wanted to take it out to see if it could be useful.”
Thanks to the original plot, he knew long ago that their first level was the Misty Forest. After thinking it over, he brought a long rope so that if everyone held onto it while walking, they wouldn’t easily get separated.
Shen Shuyu met Chi Yanxun’s eyes, then squatted down to open the black backpack. Sure enough, he took out a hemp rope that was very sturdy.
He looked up eagerly: “Brother Yanxun, I really didn’t mean to drag you down. Rest assured, I will work hard to strive for first place.”
Chi Yanxun didn’t answer immediately upon seeing the hemp rope. Instead, he asked, “Why did you bring a hemp rope for no reason!”
Shen Shuyu choked up. Come on, bro, shouldn’t we be discussing how to get out right now? Can’t I bring a rope just because I’m thoughtful!
Although he was complaining internally, he still maintained a pitiful look on his face, “I did a lot of homework. The terminal said a rope is essential for wilderness survival.”
He Mingyue coughed lightly: “Alright, let’s leave here first. We have a long way to go, and we still have to find safe houses and supplies. There’s a lot to do.”
“Mingyue is right,” Lin Xuyi also spoke up. “We entered last, so we’re already lagging behind other teams in time.”
In the first few days of the Survival War, teams generally relied on laying low. The prerequisite for laying low was finding a safe house. Especially at night, if they weren’t in a safe house and were discovered while tired and in the dark, they could easily be wiped out in one go.
In the last session, a team was accidentally exposed while failing to find a safe house and was directly eliminated by the concentrated fire of the two nearest teams.
Shen Xili and Wen Jiafei weren’t talkative and just stood quietly to the side.
Chi Yanxun took a deep breath and said, “I’ll walk at the very front, He Mingyue second, Shen Xili third, Wen Jiafei fourth, Xuyi Lin fifth, and Shen Shuyu last. Everyone hold onto the rope tight. Let’s hurry through the forest.”
Shen Shuyu had no problem with this allocation, but suddenly the system in his brain beeped. Great, in this plotline, the original host has to be tied to Chi Yanxun.
He took a deep breath and immediately looked at Chi Yanxun: “Brother Yanxun, I don’t want to walk last. I want to walk behind you.”
He looked at Chi Yanxun pitifully and whispered, “I’m scared…”
He Mingyue coughed lightly: “Then I’ll walk last. I’ll bring up the rear; I can sense any danger first.”
He Mingyue was from the Police and Military Department; his specialty was reconnaissance.
Shen Shuyu smiled at him sweetly: “Thank you, you’re so nice!”
Fearing he might regret it, he immediately ran to Chi Yanxun with the rope, handed it to him, and stood obediently behind him, muttering, “Brother Yanxun, rest assured, I will protect you well!”
…Who is protecting whom exactly!
Chi Yanxun took a deep breath but still reached out to take the rope. He wrapped it a few times around his left hand. Shen Shuyu immediately followed suit, wrapping it a few times around his own hand as well.
Lin Xuyi suddenly spoke up: “Don’t you want those two bags of yours?”
Shen Shuyu turned his head to look at the open transfer door. He lifted his chin at Wen Jiafei and ordered, “You carry them for me.” His demeanor was incredibly arrogant and domineering, without a trace of the pitifulness he showed when talking to Chi Yanxun.
Lin Xuyi: …This face change is a bit too fast.
Shen Shuyu urged: “Hurry up, there are things inside I prepared. Don’t break them.”
Only then did Wen Jiafei take a step, re-entering the transfer room. Just as he reached for a bag, another hand with distinct knuckles passed by him and easily lifted the other bag.
Wen Jiafei turned slightly to look. The person helping him was Shen Xili. He said softly, “Thanks.”
Shen Xili gave an ‘Mn’. After shouldering the bag, he walked behind Shen Shuyu and wrapped the rope twice around his left hand.
Chi Yanxun looked at the two extra bags on Shen Xili and Wen Jiafei and felt his temples throbbing.
Wherever Shen Shuyu is, nothing good happens!
Shen Shuyu naturally understood what Chi Yanxun’s sour face meant, but playing dumb was his essential skill. Instead, he looked around with great interest and even found time to ask the System: [Which direction is correct?]
The System scanned: [Master, keep walking towards your northeast! Please note, Master~ There is a mutant red ant in the Misty Forest! It is crawling towards your location.]
Shen Shuyu: [Approximately how long?]
Xiao 1 cheerfully said: [Visually estimated to be five minutes!]
Shen Shuyu: …I’m numb.
