Chapter 21: First Date with an Omega… part 1
As he neared a trance-like state, Yu Shi pressed the switch on the wall.
Blinding white light instantly filled the room.
Xie Ren squinted against the glare. When he came to his senses, Yu Shi had already turned and walked away, casually saying, “Come in and close the door.”
Xie Ren stood frozen at the doorway for a long time before forcing himself to walk in.
This was his second time stepping into this dorm room, but the feeling was completely different from before.
Back then, with a clear mind, he could clean casually. This time, he didn’t even dare to let his eyes wander, terrified of seeing something he shouldn’t.
Whether it was an illusion or not, the dorm room seemed smaller, the air thinner, making it hard to breathe.
He only knew about an Omega’s special period from physiology classes and movies.
Generally speaking, a room during such a time would be extremely private, filled with the scent of pheromones and bodily fluids. Soaked intimate clothing would be draped over chair backs, and a small, cramped space would be piled up on the bed. The Omega in heat would lie inside naked, breathing weakly, flushed red from head to toe.
…The latter part was his own conjecture.
Would Yu Shi be like that too? Naked, lying in a small nest?
Xie Ren’s Adam’s apple bobbed. Sweat slowly soaked his temples, and he felt awkward to the extreme.
“Sit down. I want to discuss something with you,” Yu Shi said.
The cool voice was like a thunderclap, waking him from his chaos. He stood straight as a ramrod by the door, whispering with a frown, “You shouldn’t have let me in.”
Yu Shi was baffled. “What’s the big deal? It’s not like you haven’t been here before.”
“…It’s different. Would you let other Alphas in?”
Yu Shi was puzzled. “You mean Zhao Yi and the others? Just a few days ago, he came up to ask me to review his thesis.”
Xie Ren clenched his fists, planning to teach Zhao Yi a good lesson later.
That kid—don’t beat him for three days and he tears the roof down.
Yu Shi pushed a chair toward him. “Let’s talk business. First, about the Gun Expo.”
Xie Ren carefully put distance between them, controlling the pheromones rampaging inside him, and shook his head resolutely. “Go ahead. I’ll just stand.”
Yu Shi glanced at him strangely but continued, “Principal Tang sent me the flowchart. It’s scheduled for next Wednesday. You’ll be the Patrol Captain that day?”
“It’s me.”
A flicker of something strange passed through Yu Shi’s eyes. Xie Ren, nerves taut, missed it completely.
“The Armory will be open all day. Principal Tang asked me to remind you to upgrade the security system.”
Under normal circumstances, Xie Ren should have sensed something wrong. Tang Jiadong knew him well; there was no need for such a reminder, let alone through a third party.
However, he didn’t overthink it. “Don’t worry, the system has been upgraded. Three teams will rotate patrols that day, and the top floor will be temporarily sealed.”
The Armory had seven floors. The seventh floor housed the server room containing the NDU database, holding all sealed information since the school’s founding.
Yu Shi said composedly, “With you leading the team, there shouldn’t be any accidents. Second thing, I’m helping you apply for a scholarship and family subsidy. Fill out this form.”
He pulled a piece of paper from the desk and handed it to Xie Ren.
Xie Ren froze, face full of confusion. “Scholarship?”
“Yes. I heard you haven’t applied for it. Considering your family situation… you don’t need to be so surprised. Teacher Li told me everything.”
Yu Shi’s tone was tactful, his eyes full of encouragement. “In front of me, you don’t need to hide anything. I won’t tell anyone. This money can alleviate your pressure. As for the family subsidy, I’m not sure if it can be approved, but at least you won’t have to moonlight on Zhongxing Road anymore.”
Xie Ren’s brain completely crashed as he stared at him in shock.
Moments later, memories pieced back together inch by inch, flashing images in his head: meeting Yu Shi while smelling of alcohol on Zhongxing Road, Yu Shi proactively paying his medical bills, Yu Shi offering to help him publish a paper…
So it was all because he thought his family was poor.
He moved his lips, about to explain, when he heard Yu Shi say gently, “Don’t feel pressured. I won’t look at anyone through colored glasses.”
As if afraid Xie Ren would be embarrassed, he continued, “I once mentored a graduate student whose family was even worse off than yours. His parents were chronically ill, and he worked three jobs a day, eating steamed buns and pickles for every meal. Later, he fainted from malnutrition in the lab. I let him use my meal card until he graduated. I didn’t tell his classmates. In terms of keeping secrets, I do a good job.”
“I heard from your counselor that you risk your life desperately at a young age, fighting to take missions regardless of danger. You must have unspeakable difficulties. Besides my professional major, I’ve taken some psychology courses. If you feel sad, you can come to talk to me. After all, I am your teacher.”
He rarely spoke such a long paragraph. Not only did these words not feel out of place, but they carried an intimacy absent in usual times. His eyes could even be called gentle.
Those honey-brown eyes looked like they could melt into water.
Xie Ren instantly lost himself in those words, forgetting what he wanted to clarify.
He licked his lips and asked, “Does Instructor Yu often buy meals for poor students?”
Yu Shi nodded. “If you need it, I can treat you too. But doesn’t the NDU cafeteria provide free meals?”
Oh, right.
It damn well didn’t charge money.
Xie Ren gave a dry laugh. “I don’t need it. But if you tell me not to moonlight, where else can I go?”
“Does your family need money that urgently?”
“…Yeah, Grandpa needs medicine recently. Expenses are high,” Xie Ren said, distressed. “Do you have any suitable part-time jobs to introduce? Like being your assistant or something.”
“I don’t need an assistant for now, and your major doesn’t match,” Yu Shi pondered. “How about this: I’ll keep an eye out for you. If there’s something suitable, I’ll recommend it to you.”
Xie Ren hooked his lips. “Thank you, Instructor Yu.”
“You’re welcome. Give me the form as soon as possible.”
Xie Ren looked troubled. “This… forget about the scholarship. Leave it for someone who needs it more. I can support myself with my allowance and part-time work.”
Yu Shi was silent for a few seconds. He didn’t force him and took the form back.
After leaving the fifth floor, Xie Ren went straight to the training ground. Throughout the afternoon training, he clocked the wrong times several times due to distraction but didn’t make everyone start over.
After training, everyone exclaimed that he was showing great mercy. Zhao Yi chuckled hehe. “That’s because he’s in love. I bet he’s going to take leave for a date this weekend. Do you believe me?”
“Holy shit, Brother Ren is seeing someone? With his high standards, I’ve never seen him look at anyone. Who is it? Do we know them?”
“Seems to be an Omega from the neighboring college. Heard they chased him actively. Better looking than Instructor Little Fish.”
“Real or fake? Better looking than Little Fish is rare.”
A group of Alphas whispered, spreading rumors.
That night, when Xie Ren returned to the dorm, a classmate met him with an excited face. “Brother Ren, heard you’re getting your marriage certificate. Throwing a banquet after graduation? Congrats! I’ll definitely give a big red envelope.”
Xie Ren: ? What the hell.
How did he not know he was getting married?
Back in the dorm, he received a call from Xie Chengfeng. He picked up lazily. “Hello, Dad.”
Xie Chengfeng paused for a few seconds, probably not expecting him to pick up immediately.
“I thought you were in evening training. Why so polite today?”
“What’s up?” Xie Ren asked.
“Is your grandfather’s health okay? I heard his blood pressure is a bit high again.”
Xie Ren mocked lightly, “Your news is too slow. That was half a month ago.”
Xie Chengfeng said, “I’ve been busy lately and haven’t had time to go back. Find time to visit him for me.”
“Are you worried about his health, or his connections? I think you’re afraid he’ll die accidentally and those old generals under him won’t submit to your management,” Xie Ren snorted.
Xie Chengfeng suppressed his anger. “Don’t use that lecturing tone with me. It’s not that I don’t want to go back, I just can’t get away. One day, when you sit in my position, you’ll understand.”
