Chapter 23 part 1
Running into such a filthy thing that had died in a cesspit right after going out was bad enough luck, but what was worse was that Luo Wenshu had to come up with a different story to tell Zhang Hui when she got back.
If she told the truthâthat what Zhang Hui saw outside the restroom door was a peeping tom, and a peeping tom who died in a cesspit while watching someone bathe, no less, and that he had even left a trace of resentment on her…
For a young girl of her age, the damage would be terrifying. The chances of her being scared in the future were low; she’d probably just be utterly disgusted. Who knew how big of a psychological shadow that would leave?
“How about this reason: a monkey from the mountain became a spirit, put on human pants and shoes, and went to the restroom to scare people?” Luo Wenshu asked.
“Huh?” Luo Xingyu was stunned for a moment, but quickly realized what Luo Wenshu meant. Putting himself in that situation, he also felt disgusted by the thought of a filthy thing that had fallen into a toilet scaring him. So he nodded, “Some monkeys are quite annoying. They not only steal food but also hit people.”
And so, the excuse was settled.
It was only a little past nine o’clock.
Luo Wenshu thought to herself that Luo Xingyu’s toy room hadn’t even taken shape yet, so there wasn’t much fun to be had at home.
Considering that when she went to find Mr. Fu at the high point near the Yu family’s home during the day, she had accidentally run into Xie Fei collecting souls, and she had told him she would work hard to lighten his burdenâeven if she meant it somewhat perfunctorily, she should at least put on a show.
So Luo Wenshu took Luo Xingyu back to Xingwang Middle School. Under the cover of invisibility talismans, they patrolled the entire campus, especially the dormitory buildings.
Unexpectedly, they actually found a ghost on the side of Girls’ Dormitory Building 2.
Building 2 was located near the corner of the school wall. In the past, there was an old locust tree on the desolate hill behind it, growing right by the wall with its branches extending over the top.
That side housed the stairwell and restrooms. The corridor area had rows of iron pipes hanging above, which was the only place on that floor to dry clothes. Except during winter and summer vacations, whenever one passed by, it was always full of clothes.
Then one day, two girls from the second floor brought bamboo poles from home, propped them on the locust tree branches, and rested the other end on the windows in the drying area that were never closed. Instantly, there was much more space to dry clothes, and it was better ventilated and got some sun.
Soon, the girls on the third floor followed suit and tied up clotheslines.
Girls’ Dormitory Building 2 was in a relatively secluded location, so hanging things outside was rarely seen by anyone. Later, the extra space on the second and third floors was used almost exclusively for drying intimate apparel.
This continued for over a semester until someone suddenly realized their underwear hanging there was missing. It hadn’t fallen down, and they couldn’t find it anywhere nearby.
The girl who lost her things didn’t pursue the matter at the time.
But gradually, more girls lost their intimate apparel. After reporting it to the dorm matron, she kept an eye out.
However, after some time, no suspicious persons were found, yet things continued to go missing.
Gradually, fewer people hung their intimate apparel there.
Then one night, a girl was washing clothes by the light of a desk lamp. When she went to hang them out, she accidentally glimpsed something on the tree. Without thinking much, she shone her lamp over there.
Good heavens, there was actually a person climbing the tree, with several pairs of panties hanging from his hand, preparing to climb out.
A girl bold enough to wash clothes in the restroom late at night wasn’t easily scared. Seeing this, instead of being frightened, she was furious. Clearly, this person was the culprit behind the missing underwear.
“Hey, youâ” the girl shouted fiercely.
The person on the tree opposite, stealing things late at night, already had a guilty conscience. The girl’s shout startled him just as she began to speak.
His foot slipped, his hand lost its grip, and he fell straight down.
From the height of the third floor, with hard concrete below, survival was entirely up to fate.
And that thief’s fate was clearly sealed. He fell headfirst and died on the spot.
The local police arrived quickly, asked a few simple questions, and took the body away.
Soon, the investigation results came out. The deceased was an old man from the neighborhood, advanced in years, unmarried, and without relatives. He had started stealing from neighbors long agoâinitially just ordinary clothes, but later he fixated on intimate apparel.
In recent years, everyone had been on guard against him, so he couldn’t steal anything. Who knows how he set his sights on the girls’ dormitory building, climbing over from that locust tree at night to steal and then climb back.
If that girl washing clothes hadn’t happened to encounter him that night, who knows when he would have been discovered.
The man had no close relatives, but after his death, distant relatives came to make a fuss. They were all shameless people, and the school didn’t want the trouble to continue, so they gave a token sum for funeral expenses to settle the matter.
Later, the school cut down the locust tree and cleared the hill behind it.
But the old man’s ghost remained in the school.
The incident happened seven or eight years ago. Few people knew about it then, and by the time Zhang Hui’s class arrived, only vague legends processed through various rumors remained.
Luo Wenshu: “…”
What was going on tonight? Why did she encounter another ghost that left one speechless?
And what was wrong with this school? Was there a problem with the feng shui? Why did it attract all these unspeakable filthy things?
“Bad luck!” Luo Wenshu cursed and drew a talisman to bind the ghost.
“Go soak with the last guy. You can even exchange hobbies.”
Then she threw the ghost into the same pigsty cesspit.
Affected by Xingwang Middle School, Luo Wenshu felt a bit resistant to the middle school now, so she switched to taking Luo Xingyu to patrol the elementary school.
After a round, apart from two ancient wandering souls buried underground whom she had Luo Xingyu send away by poking their foreheads with the Seal of the Human Walker to open the Ghost Gate, there were no special circumstances.
It was already past eleven o’clock.
As a five-year-old child, although school hadn’t started and he didn’t have much to do during the day, Luo Xingyu still needed to sleep. Staying up late would affect his growth.
So the pair, one big and one small, opened the Ghost Gate, passed through the mist of the Netherworld, and returned to their room.
Luo Wenshu took a slightly longer shower and washed her hands several times.
Luo Xingyu did the same.
After washing up, the two quickly went to sleep.
For the vast majority of people, this night was no different from any other.
Only in a certain pigsty cesspit in Shuiyang Town, two ghosts soaked in separate corners, looking down on each other.
The pigs in the adjacent pen were slightly affected, but not much; they ate and slept as usual.
