Chapter 38
Running all the way into the emergency stairwell, Xu Ziyan closed the door, gasping for breath. trembling fingers, he tore open a scent patch and stuck it to the back of his neck.
Despite all his calculations, the thing he feared most had happened after all.
His heat had come early.
With so many Alphas in the base, he absolutely could not let his pheromones leak out. The scent blocker was new and hadn’t been opened yet. Xu Ziyan was so panicked that he tried three or four times but failed to tear open the plastic seal.
Finally, he bit a small opening with his teeth and successfully sprayed the blocker on himself.
The strong, sweet scent spreading around was suppressed a little, but it wasn’t enough.
He definitely wouldn’t make it to today’s training match, but… but if he could take the suppressant before being exposed, he could still pretend nothing was wrong and play as usual in tomorrow’s points match.
The heat inside his body burned hotter and hotter. Xu Ziyan stood up, wanting to hurry back to the dorm, but the door to the stairwell was banged open from behind at that moment.
His body shook, his face went pale, and he prayed desperately in his heart that the person discovering him wasn’t an Alpha, but a Beta or Omega.
But things went against his wishes.
The next moment, an Alpha’s angry voice rang out: “Xu Ziyan! What the fuck is wrong with you! Is your brain flooded?”
Being scolded, Xu Ziyan’s heart actually dropped back heavily into place.
He turned his head and called out timidly, “…Captain.”
Xie Wei’s face was dark, and he didn’t speak.
Xu Ziyan had run away so inexplicably and suddenly just now that everyone in the training room was confused, unable to figure out what had happened.
Only Xie Wei had caught the faint, seemingly nonexistent scent of strawberry marshmallows in the air. Although he could usually smell a hint of it more or less, today’s pheromones were exceptionally different. Associating it with Xu Ziyan’s situation last time, Xie Wei didn’t have time to say much and hurriedly ran out after him.
Looking down at the scent patch and blocker on the ground, he only felt the veins on his forehead throbbing.
Xie Wei wasn’t stupid; he knew the Omega in front of him was about to enter heat. Now wasn’t a good time to get angry. The urgent priority was to get him back to the dorm to take medicine.
He directly took off his team jacket. “Lift your arms.”
Xu Ziyan looked at the tall Alpha with furrowed brows in front of him, swallowed unconsciously, and obediently raised his arms.
Soon, the jacket, still retaining body warmth, was draped over Xu Ziyan. The Alpha’s pheromones were even tougher than the blocker, directly covering the sweet scent on his body completely.
While zipping it up for him, Xie Wei asked, “Are there suppressants in the room?”
Xu Ziyan nodded dizzily.
Xie Wei hummed, “Go back and take the medicine immediately. Rest well in your room for the next few days. If you need anything, just contact me directly.”
Xu Ziyan opened his mouth and hesitated. “…There’s still a match tomorrow.”
Xie Wei looked at him in disbelief. “You want to go to the match in this state?”
Xie Wei was already suppressing his anger, and hearing this, the fire couldn’t be held back anymore; it skyrocketed. “You didn’t take care of yourself and went into heat directly in the training room—I’m not even scolding you for that—but then? You still want to play during your heat? Where is your brain? Do you know what the result would have been if the person who came in just now wasn’t me, but another Alpha? If something went wrong on the field, what would the result be?”
After an Omega entered heat, they naturally craved protection and more security from an Alpha. Now, being scolded right in the face by Xu Ziyan, coupled with his emotions being more sensitive and fragile than usual, Xu Ziyan felt a sourness in his heart, and tears actually welled up in his eyes.
Xie Wei’s anger was halfway out when it was instantly extinguished by the young man’s tears.
He was tongue-tied and clumsily tried to wipe the young man’s tears, saying depressingly, “…Fine, my fault. I shouldn’t have scolded you.”
Xu Ziyan was also startled by his sudden fragility. He blinked and said in a muffled voice, “It’s not that I didn’t think about those things, but if I don’t play, there’s no one in the team who can play. When Clear was here before, TWG never forfeited a match because a member was in heat. I don’t want to be the special case.”
Xie Wei sighed, unable to get angry anymore. He turned his back to Xu Ziyan and squatted down. “Get on. I’ll carry you back.”
Xu Ziyan looked at the broad, powerful back of the Alpha in front of him and fidgeted. “I can walk myself.”
“Tsk,” Xie Wei said. “Why so much nonsense?”
Xu Ziyan paused, then truthfully spoke the thought in his mind: “But I’ve already entered heat. Captain, you are an Alpha. Being so close to me, won’t you… you know?”
Xie Wei said expressionlessly, “No. Xu Ziyan, if you drag this out any longer, I really won’t care about you anymore.”
Xu Ziyan hurriedly shut his mouth and climbed onto Xie Wei’s back.
His arms wrapped around the Alpha’s neck, his side profile snuggling against the Alpha’s shoulder. At such close range, he could clearly smell the faint scent of lemon mint.
It made people feel comfortable and safe.
He closed his eyes, his forehead rubbing gently against Xie Wei’s shoulder.
The body of an Omega in heat was soft and hot, pressed tightly against his back, almost like a furnace. Xie Wei carried Xu Ziyan, his steps steady, his expression unchanging.
However, only he knew that he was already at the edge of his endurance.
Xie Wei knew very well in his heart that even if he did Xu Ziyan right here and now, Xu Ziyan wouldn’t say a word of blame to him afterward.
He might even stammer an apology, taking all the fault onto himself.
Xie Wei closed his eyes briefly, hoisted the person on his back up a bit, and walked straight toward the dormitory.
The night wind carried a bone-piercing chill, blowing over like a handful of ice. They were lucky; there was no one along the way, and Xie Wei brought Xu Ziyan back to the dormitory safe and sound.
He placed the young man, who was already somewhat delirious, onto the bed. Frowning, he touched his face and neck, which were burning red. After confirming there was no major issue, he straightened up and called Yu Guangzhou.
The call was connected quickly. “Hello? Where are you two? The training match has been delayed by ten minutes.”
“Sorry,” Xie Wei rubbed the center of his brows. “Today’s training match will probably have to be canceled. Help me apologize to the other side. We’ll schedule another time later and offer free sparring as compensation.”
Yu Guangzhou was confused. For so many years, come wind or rain, Xie Wei had never been absent once. So hearing this, he didn’t react immediately. “Cancel? You… are you sick?”
Xie Wei said, “Not me, it’s Ice.”
Yu Guangzhou was still a bit puzzled. Frowning, he recalled Xu Ziyan’s state today and felt there was nothing wrong. Just as he wanted to ask again, a lightbulb suddenly went off. “Could it be?”
Xie Wei gave a “Mm.” “He probably won’t be able to play in tomorrow’s match either. You…”
“I can play.”
His speech suddenly interrupted, Xie Wei turned his head.
Black hair was plastered softly against a forehead, eyes were filled with water, and the bright red, full lip bead was slightly upturned, as if soliciting a kiss.
Xie Wei’s throat tightened, and he almost dropped the phone.
The words he said in the stairwell just now had probably all been spoken to a dog. Just as he wanted to open his mouth to scold Xu Ziyan for not knowing the severity of the situation, he heard Yu Guangzhou laughing heartily on the other end of the phone: “Right, why couldn’t he play? You two rest well tonight. I’ll have someone pick you up separately to go to the airport tomorrow. Hmm, it has indeed been too busy recently. But Xie Wei, I’m not lecturing you, but you really can’t be slack about topping up the mark.”
“…”
Only then did Xie Wei belatedly remember that because he was too lazy to explain, in Yu Guangzhou’s mind right now, he and Xu Ziyan were still a couple.
Indeed, when an Omega entered heat, they only needed a temporary mark from an Alpha to get temporary relief. The effect was better than any suppressant.
But…
Yu Guangzhou was quick and hung up the phone first. Xu Ziyan lay on the bed, looking pitiful again.
Xie Wei felt two kinds of fire burning in his heart: one was anger, the other was desire.
He gritted his teeth. “Xu Ziyan, do you really plan to play after taking medicine?”
Xu Ziyan looked at him, his eyes dodging a bit, and whispered something.
Xie Wei didn’t hear clearly and walked closer. “What?”
The young man suddenly raised his hand and grabbed the corner of his clothes.
“There is another way.” The Omega’s soft and full lips opened and closed continuously. “Captain, I… I am willing to be temporarily marked by you.”
The cloying sweet scent of pheromones exploded to the extreme at this instant. Xie Wei looked at him, cursed in a low voice, then roughly grabbed the hair at the back of Xu Ziyan’s head and kissed him fiercely.
Last time, both were delirious, and he only had fragmented scenes in his mind when recalling it. This time, Xu Ziyan remained conscious, and Xie Wei maintained his reason from beginning to end.
It was just that reason ultimately couldn’t withstand the craving in his bones.
After the marking ended, Xu Ziyan was tired from crying. He forced himself to wash up and then fell into a deep sleep.
Xie Wei, however, couldn’t sleep.
He tucked the quilt in for the young man and walked to the balcony.
The night was deep, and everything was quiet; even the neon lights were somewhat dim. The clouds in the sky were thick, suppressing the moonlight and starlight heavily.
Xie Wei opened the window, and the biting cold wind took away the last bit of heat from his body.
Because there were simply too many pursuers around him, and Xie Wei had that invulnerable appearance, Mother Xie worried if he had a shadow in his heart because of his father. One night, she walked into his room and asked him with a smile when he planned to get a partner.
Xie Wei’s answer was: It’s not time yet.
Mother Xie was relentless. “Then when counts as ‘time’?”
Xie Wei said, “At least I don’t hope that it’s because of pheromone attraction that we get together in a daze. That kind of feeling counts for nothing.”
The person who vowed so solemnly back then was him, and the person who couldn’t withstand the temptation now was also him.
A trace of a bitter smile spilled from Xie Wei’s lips. He shook his head and closed the window again.
