Chapter 60: Happy New Year

After leaving the apartment, Gu Huaiye got busy again.

The company was on holiday, so he couldn’t work. Instead, he cleaned the villa and went to the mall to prepare New Year’s goods, scaring the servants into thinking they were about to lose their jobs.

Father Gu noticed something was wrong with him and pulled him into the study for a talk.

“Are you under too much pressure recently?” Father Gu looked at his son, who had lost a significant amount of weight, with heartache. “If it’s too much, just take a rest. You don’t have to go to the company to help all the time. We don’t need to earn that much money; enough to spend is fine.”

Gu Huaiye shook his head. “I quite like staying at the company and working. I feel fulfilled every day.”

“Then what’s wrong?” Father Gu remembered the previous incident about canceling the engagement and probed, “Is it because of the engagement?”

Gu Huaiye pondered for a moment, then suddenly looked at Father Gu.

” regarding the engagement, I do have something to say.”

Father Gu immediately sat up straight, guessing this kid wanted to cancel the engagement again.

“Let’s skip the engagement step. Once Chen Xialin and I graduate, let’s just hold the wedding and get married directly.”

“No—” Father Gu froze. “You want to get married directly?”

“En. We have to get married sooner or later anyway; I don’t want too much hassle.” Gu Huaiye paused. “But we need to discuss it with the Chen family. It’s not good for me to decide alone.”

Father Gu laughed. “So it was this. Don’t worry, Xialin will definitely agree.”

He reckoned Chen Xialin was eager to get married directly.

When Gu Huaiye proposed canceling the engagement a while back, that child Chen Xialin cried non-stop; it nearly broke his old heart.

“Still, we should ask.”

“Tomorrow is New Year’s Eve. I’ll invite their family over for dinner, and we can discuss it then.” Father Gu beamed with joy. “Chen Mingrui hasn’t been willing to play chess with me lately, and I was too embarrassed to go find him.”

Sure enough, getting married was the right choice.

If he married Chen Xialin, many people would be happy, and they would receive everyone’s blessings.

“Dad, don’t forget your physical exam after the New Year.”

“I remember.” Father Gu looked helpless. “What’s wrong with you lately, child? You’ve started managing your father.”

“I’m caring about you.”

Seeing his son become so sensible, Father Gu was incredibly happy, the smile on his lips rising constantly.

He could consider this as having given an account to his deceased wife.

On New Year’s Eve, Chen Zirui’s family came over.

Just as Father Gu said, they had absolutely no objections to the decision to skip the engagement and marry directly; they all felt it saved trouble.

Of course, the happiest person was Chen Xialin.

His gaze was glued to Gu Huaiye all night, a shy smile hanging on his face.

After dinner, they went to the courtyard to set off fireworks.

Chen Xialin quietly walked to Gu Huaiye’s side and linked arms with him.

“Brother Gu, thank you. I’m so happy today.”

Gu Huaiye rubbed his head. “Me too.”

The fireworks were gorgeous and lively.

But Gu Huaiye thought of someone. He wondered if that person had eaten a proper New Year’s Eve dinner.

“I want to go smoke a cigarette.” Gu Huaiye lowered his eyes and said to Chen Xialin.

Chen Xialin immediately let go of his arm. “Okay.”

Gu Huaiye went to a quiet spot and lit a cigarette.

Chen Zirui appeared beside him at some point, took his cigarette pack, took one out, and started smoking.

“Have you really decided?” Chen Zirui paused. “What about Xie Miaohan?”

Gu Huaiye blew out a smoke ring, his brow calm, as if talking about an unimportant matter.

“Cut off.”

Chen Zirui hesitated to speak. After a moment, he sighed.

“This is good too. Alphas shouldn’t be together in the first place. Whether for you or for him, this is the best choice.”

Gu Huaiye gave a noise of assent.

Chen Zirui finished smoking his cigarette and patted Gu Huaiye on the shoulder.

“We should head back. Happy New Year. See you when school starts.”

“Happy New Year.”

After Chen Zirui left, Gu Huaiye took out his phone to send a message to his Little Uncle.

At that moment, a message popped up on the screen.

It was from a strange number.

— Happy New Year.

Gu Huaiye knew it was from Xie Miaohan.

Since leaving the apartment, he had unilaterally cut off contact between them.

Whether it was WeChat, text messages, or phone calls, as long as it was from Xie Miaohan, he wouldn’t look at it.

Perhaps out of desperation, he chose to use a strange number to send him a message.

Gu Huaiye looked at the text message. After a moment, he deleted it.

He didn’t reply, and he couldn’t reply.

Time flew by, and finally, it was the day school started.

Lu Zishi arrived at the Gu villa early to drive Gu Huaiye to school.

Getting out of the car, Gu Huaiye took out a red envelope and handed it to Lu Zishi.

“This is a New Year’s hongbao for your daughter. Hope she is happy every day.”

Lu Zishi accepted it and said gratefully, “Thank you, Young Master. You really are a warm person.”

Working here until now, he had never seen the Young Master treat anyone badly.

He really was a very gentle person.

Gu Huaiye smiled. “There’s nothing else today; you can get off work early.”

“Alright.”

Lu Zishi helped him take his luggage out of the trunk, then drove away from the school.

Gu Huaiye pulled up the handle of his suitcase and walked toward the dorms.

Halfway there, he met Xie Miaohan and Xiang Wanxing beside him.

Gu Huaiye froze slightly, gripped the suitcase handle, looked away, and pretended not to see them.

But just as he passed them, Xie Miaohan suddenly called out to him.

“You’re here.”

Gu Huaiye paused, pretended not to hear his voice, and continued walking.

Xie Miaohan chased after him and grabbed his suitcase.

“Let me help you pull the luggage.”

Gu Huaiye frowned and said coldly, “No need to trouble yourself. It’s not heavy.”

Xie Miaohan had to let go of the suitcase and followed behind him all the way.

Gu Huaiye scratched his hair irritably and turned to look at Xie Miaohan.

“What exactly do you want to do? Didn’t I tell you we have no relationship anymore? Please don’t come looking for me again.”

Xie Miaohan pursed his lips and looked down at Gu Huaiye’s wrist.

“You can’t let go, can you?” Xie Miaohan’s voice trembled slightly, seeming eager to confirm something. “You didn’t take off the bracelet I gave you. Is it because you can’t bear to let me go at all?”

Gu Huaiye was stunned.

He looked down at the gold bracelet on his wrist.

He had meant to take it off, but as time dragged on, he forgot.

Xie Miaohan made up his mind and took Gu Huaiye’s hand wearing the bracelet.

“I will do better this time. Can you please not leave me behind?”

Gu Huaiye saw Xie Miaohan’s refusal to give up. He bit his lip hard and decided to say something even crueler.

“I said before that I wanted to prepare a birthday gift for my fiancé.”

“The bracelet you gave me is the gift I’m going to give him.”

Watching the blood drain from Xie Miaohan’s face bit by bit, Gu Huaiye still refused to let him off.

“I’m going to melt this gold bracelet down.”
