Chapter 65: His World Was Quiet
With Xie Miaohan gone, Gu Huaiye’s entire world became peaceful.
His phone no longer received messages from various strange numbers, and he wouldn’t run into a familiar figure downstairs when returning to the dorm.
It was as if the man had evaporated from the world, having no more interaction with him.
“Brother Gu, do you want to go play ball today?”
Chen Zirui appeared beside him at some point, seeing him staring blankly at the gold bracelet in the drawer.
“I saw you wearing this bracelet before; why did you suddenly stop wearing it?”
Chen Zirui wanted to reach out and touch it, but Gu Huaiye closed the drawer in time, shutting Chen Zirui’s hand out.
“Just an inconspicuous little trinket.” Gu Huaiye smiled, his eyes very calm.
“Is that so?” Chen Zirui didn’t take it to heart either. “Want to go play ball?”
“No.” Gu Huaiye took out his laptop. “I promised my Little Uncle I’d finish the proposal tonight.”
“Tsk tsk tsk, your university life is really boring.”
Gu Huaiye lifted his eyelids to look at him. “How’s your training going? Any chance of getting into the reserve army by the end of the year?”
Chen Zirui’s smile collapsed immediately. “You really hold a grudge, always picking at my scars. Fine, fine, fine, won’t tease you anymore. You go ahead and write your proposal, President Gu.”
Gu Huaiye laughed helplessly, then started typing on the computer.
Half an hour later, his phone vibrated. It was a message from Lu Zishi.
— Young Master, he still hasn’t accepted the money.
Gu Huaiye frowned, thought for a moment, and replied to Lu Zishi.
— Understood. No need to transfer money to him in the future. This matter is completely over.
— Okay.
Gu Huaiye put down his phone, rubbing his temples wearily.
Ever since he proposed that ridiculous sugar daddy arrangement to Xie Miaohan, every time he transferred one million to Xie Miaohan, the other party refused to accept it.
Later, he handed this matter over to Lu Zishi to handle, but Xie Miaohan asked Lu Zishi to pass a message, saying he wanted to meet and have a good talk.
Gu Huaiye naturally refused and kept avoiding Xie Miaohan.
Until Chen Xialin’s birthday banquet, after Xie Miaohan dropped those baffling words, he completely vanished without a trace.
Whenever Lu Zishi transferred money to Xie Miaohan, Xie Miaohan would return it intact.
It seemed he was living quite well with Xiang Wanxing and probably didn’t need his money anymore.
Realizing he was thinking about Xie Miaohan again, Gu Huaiye quickly shook his head and refocused on his work.
He needed to be busy.
That way he could forget the events of his past life, as well as Xie Miaohan’s face.
Before he knew it, another year had ended.
Gu Huaiye and Father Gu came to the Chen family’s home for New Year’s Eve.
At the dinner table, Father Chen said to Gu Huaiye and Chen Xialin, “You two will graduate in a little over a year. It’s about time to start preparing and decide where to hold the wedding.”
Chen Xialin glanced shyly at Gu Huaiye.
“I’ll listen to Brother Gu’s arrangements for everything.”
Gu Huaiye thought for a moment and looked at Father Gu. “Dad, is it okay to book the wedding at the place where you and Mom got married?”
Father Gu looked a bit surprised. “Of course it is.”
Seeing Gu Huaiye’s recent cold and indifferent mood, he had been worried this kid would renege on the engagement.
Unexpectedly, he actively proposed holding the wedding at that place; it seemed he really intended to treat the other person well.
Father Chen asked again, “Then the wedding rings…”
Father Gu quickly said, “Our Gu family will prepare them.”
He turned to look at Chen Xialin. “Little Lin, you are my only daughter-in-law. We’ll definitely pick the best ring for you.”
Chen Xialin beamed with joy.
“Thank you, Uncle.”
Father Gu winked at him. “Time to change how you address me.”
Chen Xialin blushed and whispered, “Dad.”
Except for Gu Huaiye, the others laughed happily.
Gu Huaiye suddenly stood up. “Sorry, I’m going out for a smoke.”
Father Gu frowned. “We’re all eating; why smoke now?”
“Let the child go.” Father Chen lifted his chin toward Gu Huaiye. “There’s not much time left anyway. Come visit our Chen family more often so you two can cultivate feelings.”
Gu Huaiye gave a noise of assent and left the dining room.
Walking to the main hall entrance, he ran into Chen Zirui carrying bags big and small.
“Cao! Exhausted Laozi to death!”
Chen Zirui had tanned a shade darker; Gu Huaiye almost didn’t recognize him, thinking he was a refugee from somewhere.
“So you guys have holidays?” Gu Huaiye teased. “I thought your army was very strict and you couldn’t come back.”
Chen Zirui was very capable; he had entered the reserve army two months ago and had already gone to the headquarters in District B for training.
“Don’t mention it. Getting leave approved is super troublesome; just filling out the paperwork made me dizzy.”
Chen Zirui saw the cigarette in Gu Huaiye’s hand, his eyes lighting up, and he quickly snatched it.
“Wocao, Laozi hasn’t smoked in ages; I’m craving it to death!”
Chen Zirui hurriedly took one out, held it in his mouth, subconsciously touched his pocket, and remembered he didn’t have a lighter right now.
Gu Huaiye laughed, took out his lighter, and lit it for Chen Zirui.
Now he really looked like a refugee.
“How did you get so thin?”
Chen Zirui blew out a smoke ring and sighed. “Eating dry coarse grains every day, how could I not be thin?”
“I didn’t expect you to last this long.”
Chen Zirui narrowed his eyes, wishing he could smoke three at once.
“It feels so good to be home.”
“They’re all eating upstairs.” Gu Huaiye patted his shoulder. “You should hurry up; there won’t be much food left later.”
Chen Zirui nodded, suddenly thought of something, and turned to look at Gu Huaiye.
“Do you know who I saw in the army?”
Gu Huaiye’s heart skipped a beat.
“Xie Miaohan!” Chen Zirui didn’t notice the abnormality in Gu Huaiye’s expression and continued talking to himself. “Holy shit, he really changed a lot; I almost couldn’t recognize him. Didn’t something happen at the border last month? He led the troops to solve it. After coming back, he was promoted several ranks in a row. I heard many people say if this continues, he has a chance to become a commander.”
Gu Huaiye smiled faintly. “Then he’s living quite well.”
No wonder he was unwilling to accept his money.
Presumably, that sum of money wasn’t worth mentioning in Xie Miaohan’s eyes.
“Yeah, I also met Xiang Wanxing.” When mentioning this person, Chen Zirui couldn’t hide the disgust on his face. “He just relies on his aunt marrying into the royal family, having a noble status, and always comes to visit our army for no reason.”
“To see Xie Miaohan?”
“Pretty much.” Chen Zirui scratched his head, his expression a bit weird. “I’ve never seen such an unchaste Omega.”
“What do you mean?”
“A few days ago, he took advantage of me changing clothes and being off guard to smack my butt.” Thinking of that scene, Chen Zirui’s face turned as black as the bottom of a pot. “He even said with a butt this perky, maybe I mutated during differentiation and should have been an Omega. Omega my ass.”
Gu Huaiye: “…”
“I’m going to smoke. You hurry up and go eat.”
Gu Huaiye walked into the courtyard, lit a cigarette, squatted down, and stared at the accumulated snow on the ground.
Suddenly someone approached and squatted down beside him.
“Gu, are you unhappy?” Chen Xialin looked at Gu Huaiye uneasily. “Do you feel uncomfortable because I called your father ‘Dad’?”
Gu Huaiye froze, shaking his head with a smile. “Nothing like that, don’t overthink it.”
“I feel like you seem very unhappy.” Chen Xialin pursed his lips. “Is it because I didn’t perform well enough?”
“No, I’m just a bit tired recently, caused by being too busy with work.”
Chen Xialin gave an “En”. He stared at Gu Huaiye’s side profile, suddenly leaning in wanting to kiss his cheek.
Gu Huaiye stood up immediately, dodging Chen Xialin’s approach.
“Sorry.” Gu Huaiye frowned.
Chen Xialin clenched his fists, his tone low. “Don’t say sorry to me; it makes me feel like you want to cancel the engagement again.”
“I…”
Chen Xialin took a deep breath, stood up, and smiled at Gu Huaiye.
“It’s okay, I’ll wait for you.”
