After being sent to the cold palace, the emperor’s heart was burned into ashes CHAPTER 49.1

Chapter 49: Disposition part 1

The morning sunlight pierced through the thin mist, spilling down. The Empress Dowager looked dazed, as if knowing this son of hers for the first time.

Gu Zhen’s expression was somewhat cold, a shadow lurking between his brows and eyes, his voice low: “Mother just said Linchuan is Zhen’s own sister. Does Mother not know that the Empress is Zhen’s wife?”

The Empress Dowager pursed her lips tightly, lowering her head without speaking.

But Gu Zhen refused to let her off, his voice remaining so steady it seemed devoid of any ripple: “Father grew up with Aunt, so their affection was naturally different. Mother was at odds with Aunt, so it’s not hard to understand why he favored Aunt.” He paused, the corner of his lips pulling into a smile, his expression growing colder. “Zhen does not have such affection for Linchuan.”

Outside the room, Linchuan’s footsteps as she walked in halted abruptly. She looked blankly at the stone steps before her, an inexplicable chill shooting through her body.

“Mother, give Zhen a straight word today.” Gu Zhen stood up, looking down at the Empress Dowager, turning a black jade thumb ring on his hand. “The Six Bureaus disregarded the Empress, overstepped their authority to act on their own, and were quite disrespectful in their speech towards the Empress. Should they be punished or not? Is there any problem with the Empress’s disciplinary action this time?”

Meeting the Emperor’s phoenix eyes which held a hint of anger, the Empress Dowager’s brow jumped fiercely. She sighed slightly, saying somewhat dejectedly: “They should be punished. For disrespecting the Empress like that, they should indeed be properly disciplined.”

Gu Zhen nodded, a cold heaviness on his handsome face, then said indifferently: “Since Mother says so, regarding the Empress’s disposition of this matter, Zhen hopes Mother will not gossip about it again.”

A look of embarrassment appeared on the Empress Dowager’s face. Her cheeks were slightly red, looking somewhat unsightly—whether from anger or shame was unclear—and she kept her face tight, saying nothing.

On the surface, Gu Zhen’s patience had always been good. Seeing the Empress Dowager silent, he showed no annoyance, though his voice grew slightly heavier: “From now on, matters concerning palace officials will be handled by the Empress. Mother should stop interfering.”

Yesterday, upon hearing the Empress punished the palace officials, he had ordered an interrogation and learned that these officials were usually perfunctory towards the Empress and held little respect for her in secret.

He couldn’t help but recall that night when he had looked at the Empress with disdain, asking her, “Can’t you even do something this simple?”

But no one had taught her. The people below hid things and held back; she could only grope her way forward bit by bit on her own.

Yet she still had to be disdained by him.

A dull pain throbbed in his chest, making Gu Zhen feel a bit breathless. Although he saw the Empress Dowager’s face growing uglier, he continued: “Furthermore, Linchuan’s unruliness, Consort Dowager He’s audacity, and the Seventh Brother’s lack of breeding—all have been indulged by Mother. Zhen has said enough for today. Mother, think it over yourself.”

Coming out from the inner hall, he happened to run into Linchuan.

Linchuan was startled and instinctively wanted to avoid him. Regaining her senses, she bowed her body and stammered: “Imperial Brother, ten thousand blessings.”

Gu Zhen stood on the stone steps looking at her, his imposing phoenix eyes containing some anger. He said coldly: “After reading books for so many years, did Father, Mother, and your teachers only teach you to be arrogant, domineering, and disrespectful to your elders?”

Linchuan’s heart thumped violently: “Imperial… Imperial Brother… Imperial Brother sees clearly, I…”

Seeing her looking around in panic and losing her composure, a flash of disgust passed through Gu Zhen’s eyes: “Not a shred of the demeanor a princess should have. Forget it. Go copy a few scrolls of books and reflect properly. Zhen doesn’t care if you reflect truly or falsely; just come out when you have thought it through.”

After speaking, he flicked his sleeves and left directly.

Watching the Emperor’s retreating back, Linchuan panicked for a moment and reached out to grab him: “Imperial Brother!” But she was blocked by several imperial attendants.

“Princess, by His Majesty’s order, please return to your sleeping quarters,” Wu Nan said, bowing as he stood before her, blocking the way.

“You!” Linchuan’s eyes reddened with anger. Although the attendants didn’t touch her, they blocked the path firmly. She used her strength but couldn’t push them away, so she had to return to her own chambers.

The Empress Dowager sat on the couch with eyes closed. Hearing the female official enter to report, her brow jumped fiercely, and she leaned against the cushion, breathing somewhat unevenly.

After a long while, she said in a deep voice: “Never mind. Her temper needs to be ground down properly. If Aijia interferes, the Emperor will likely be unhappy again.”

She asked herself if she knew a thing or two about her son’s temperament.

Once he decided on something, even if the road was blocked, he wouldn’t retreat half a step. A rift had already formed between them; if she sought him out for Linchuan’s matter again, their relationship would likely only worsen.

“Your Ladyship, what about the Princess?” the female official asked her.

The Empress Dowager rubbed her brow, her voice carrying some fatigue: “Letting the Emperor cure her temper is good. Aijia is too lazy to manage these matters in the future.” Resting for a moment, she asked again, “How is Xunling?”

The female official said: “Miss He’s knees only hurt for the first few days. After resting for a period, she is much better.”

The Empress Dowager nodded gently: “In that case, let her recuperate well at home. For the time being, Aijia will not bring her into the palace to play.”

The female official understood, knowing the Empress Dowager had given up the thought of bringing her maiden family’s niece into the palace, so she responded respectfully: “Yes.”

Coming out of Wanchun Palace, Gu Zhen wanted to go to Jiao Fang Palace first.

But when the ceremonial guard had already reached the outside of Jiao Fang Palace, he changed his mind temporarily and went directly back to Zichen Palace.

The attendants only acted on orders; only he knew that he dared not go in. He dared not see her half-smiling eyes, the arc of mockery on her lips, or her unscrupulous laughter when speaking with others.

Every single thing made his heart suddenly clench, crumpling it forcefully into a ball, drawing out gushing blood.

Passing by the Suzhang Gate, he inadvertently glanced inside and happened to see her playing Cuju. Without powder or makeup, her temple hair slightly messy, her smiling face was bright and beautiful.

But when their gazes met, he saw that smile fade again.

A voice in his heart was screaming desperately.

That smile should clearly be mine. Clearly, in the past, she would smile at me like that too.

She was always easily shy, lowering her head and pursing her lips in a quiet smile, beautiful beyond words.

But now, he had nothing.

Gu Zhen withdrew his gaze at this moment, closed his eyes gloomily, and leaned against the carriage wall.

She was indeed as she had said before: unless summoned, she would not step half a step out of Jiao Fang Palace.

A bitter smile hung on his lips as Gu Zhen returned to Zichen Palace. He Mingshou was already leading a silver-haired woman, waiting for him in the side hall.

“Only instructed the day before yesterday; Uncle’s speed is fast.” Seeing He Mingshou enter the hall, Gu Zhen chuckled lightly.

He Mingshou said: “Nanny Song still lives in Luoyang, and the Empress Dowager has never missed sending festival rewards every year. It was quite convenient for this official to find her.”

Gu Zhen responded lightly, turning his head to look at the white-haired woman: “Has Uncle spoken to Nanny Song?”

“The Eldest Master has already explained to this old slave. If Your Majesty has any needs, please just order this old slave,” Nanny Song bowed and replied softly.

Gu Zhen said: “Mother has a soft ear, and in the past, there were always some unpresentable cats and dogs around her. Nanny Song doesn’t need to do anything, just help watch over things by Mother’s side and dissuade her when she is ill-considered.”

Nanny Song was the Empress Dowager’s wet nurse. The Empress Dowager’s birth mother died early, and she raised the Empress Dowager single-handedly, so she was most respected by the Empress Dowager. She had long since retired from the palace to enjoy her old age, surrounded by children and grandchildren enjoying family happiness.
