Chapter 33: As You Wish: I’ll Give You Whatever You Want
The Beta pushed open the laboratory door. Under the fluorescent lights, Lin Mo was leaning over a microscope, observing a sample. Hearing the noise, he didn’t look up, his long fingers still adjusting the focus.
The Beta’s originally agitated emotions gradually calmed down upon seeing Lin Mo quietly and intently conducting his experiment.
At an age when peers would be complacent over a small achievement, Lin Mo hadn’t shown even a hint of pride when receiving the Dean’s Special Award. At this moment, the blue light of the screen reflected on his slightly furrowed brow. He functioned calmly like a precision instrument, and even time seemed to slow down as it passed him.
The Beta reined in his excitement and prepared to continue his experiment. Just as he buttoned the second button of his lab coat, he heard a click—Lin Mo had turned off the microscope’s illumination lamp.
Lin Mo stopped his experiment. “What happened? The scents on you are very mixed, especially the cocoa smell.”
The Beta stood frozen. This was too unusual—Lin Mo always cared only about experiments and data. Since when did he start noticing the scents on others?
He subconsciously lifted his wrist to sniff. The cuff of his lab coat only smelled faintly of alcohol. “Cocoa smell?”
The Beta frowned in confusion, then slapped his forehead in realization. He briefly recounted the events: Tang Xingye fainting from hypoglycemia, people around helping to support him, then Lu Zhi appearing, releasing spiritual power to separate the crowd, and carrying him back.
He spoke briefly, as this top scholar usually had little interest in campus anecdotes.
As he spoke, worry surfaced on his face. “I don’t know how Xingye is doing now. He always forgets to eat breakfast…”
Recalling Tang Xingye’s pale face when he fainted, eyelashes trembling fragilely, lips so pale they were almost transparent. The Beta remembered that when he supported him, that waist was shockingly thin, as if it would snap with a little force.
The Beta sighed and habitually looked at Lin Mo. The other party maintained that standard experimental posture. He shook his head, preparing to turn back to his experiment, when he inadvertently glimpsed—
Those usually calm, indifferent black pupils were contracting violently.
Some kind of violent emotion exploded deep in the black irises, like concentrated sulfuric acid suddenly dropped into clear water, boiling and surging up.
Lu Zhi hurriedly traced back and found that in the records of the last two weeks, Lin Mo’s name appeared more and more frequently.
[Damn it, Lin Mo knows I’m doing an experiment but deliberately comes to compete with me… The lab breaker tripped; it was too dark to remember where the flashlight and backup power were. Lin Mo actually remembered.]
Lu Zhi’s imagination had never been so active. That night, Tang Xingye didn’t return to the dorm, and the next day he carried a faint scent of mint.
He couldn’t help wondering: in the dark laboratory, what happened between Lin Mo and Tang Xingye? What would they talk about?
How long did the power outage in the lab last? Ten minutes? Twenty minutes? For a premeditated Alpha, how many things could be done in this time?
Fantasy wrapped around his nerves like poison ivy—were Lin Mo’s fingertips wandering along the hem of Tang Xingye’s lab coat? Did the Alpha’s pheromones infiltrate the Beta’s breath through the darkness?
Or perhaps he deliberately hid his presence, waiting until the person panic-strickenly fumbled for the switch, then suddenly pulled him into a cubicle, knee prying open his legs. The Alpha’s canine teeth might have already pressed against…
The sound of water in the bathroom stopped abruptly. Lu Zhi slammed the notebook shut, the leather cover making a dull slap against his palm.
Only then did he realize his canine teeth had pierced his lower lip at some point. The taste of rust spread on the tip of his tongue. Realizing his jealousy was so intense that a single line of text could trigger infinite conjecture.
Steaming mist wrapped in fragrance surged out. Tang Xingye came out drying his hair. Wet black strands stuck to his slender neck, water droplets rolling down the hair tips, sliding past the hollow of his collarbone, and finally disappearing into the edge of the bath towel. His skin was flushed pink from the heat, eyes still holding the thin redness from the bath. He looked like jade soaked in water, making it impossible to look away.
Lu Zhi’s gaze followed the water droplets, over the edge of the towel, into the hidden places.
Tang Xingye dried the ends of his hair and looked up, only to see Lu Zhi staring at him with burning eyes. Those pitch-black eyes were full of suppressed anticipation and longing; it seemed as if a tail was wagging behind him.
Is Lu Zhi having an episode?
Given that Lu Zhi had just helped him solve his pheromone problem, Tang Xingye didn’t want to discard him immediately after use. “Want to bite?”
Lu Zhi licked his lips, the longing in his eyes almost overflowing. He said hoarsely: “…Can I?”
Tang Xingye paused in drying his hair and glanced at him: “Mn.”
Receiving permission, Lu Zhi immediately leaned in. Tang Xingye felt something hard like a branding iron touch his waist—probably a belt buckle.
Lu Zhi was burning with thirst. His canine teeth gently rubbed the skin at the back of the other’s neck, secretly licking the soft flesh.
“Lu Zhi.” Tang Xingye spoke suddenly. “Are you biting or licking?”
“I…” Lu Zhi backed away a little guiltily, but seeing the waistline revealed by the loose bath towel, the skin still bearing undried water marks glowing alluringly, his brain heated up again. He leaned in and took a bite right there.
“Hiss—” Tang Xingye shoved him away violently. A vivid red appeared at the corners of his eyes due to the pain. “Are you a dog?”
Lu Zhi stumbled back two steps, hurriedly explaining, “Baby, listen to me…”
“Get out.” Tang Xingye tightened his bath towel and pointed at the dorm door coldly.
Lu Zhi wanted to step forward but froze upon seeing that cold gaze. He left dejectedly, turning back unwillingly at the door: “Um… should I bring you nutrient solution tomorrow morning?”
His answer was a pillow flying toward his face, hitting him with a face full of fragrance.
The cotton fabric was covered in Tang Xingye’s unique scent. Lu Zhi instinctively caught the pillow, pressing it hard against his face to take a deep breath. The gland at the back of his neck throbbed, and his canines itched. He had to use all his strength to restrain himself from rushing back in.
From inside came Tang Xingye’s cold voice: “Give me back my pillow.”
Lu Zhi’s Adam’s apple rolled. He put it back reluctantly.
…
Lu Zhi was planning to buy a neutralizer to eliminate his pheromone scent in the hallway when he ran into Lin Mo. He paused slightly, thinking of the diary, and spoke coldly, “You’re back early.”
Lin Mo glanced at him strangely. “I’m returning to my own dorm. Is there a problem?”
Lu Zhi asked this not out of concern for his roommate, but out of some unspeakable jealousy.
Soon reason returned, and Lu Zhi sensed something wrong. The mutual repulsion of pheromones between Alphas was strong, yet this place was full of his pheromones. Wasn’t Lin Mo choking on it?
“Aren’t you soaking in the lab?” Lu Zhi looked at Lin Mo. “I ate strong-smelling food in the dorm; the smell might not have dissipated yet. Want to wait until curfew to go back?”
Lin Mo’s eyes paused slightly. “What did you eat?”
Lu Zhi stared at him and said slowly: “Jackfruit.”
Lin Mo frowned slightly and said indifferently: “Next time don’t eat in the dorm. I’ll open the window to air it out later.”
Lu Zhi’s gaze patrolled Lin Mo’s face, trying to catch a trace of abnormality. But the other’s eyes were calm and waveless, as if really just discussing a minor friction between roommates.
“Tang Xingye is sleeping; keep it down,” Lu Zhi probed finally.
“Oh.” Lin Mo responded flatly and opened the dorm door.
Entering the dorm, Lin Mo closed his eyes slightly and rubbed his throbbing temples. Lu Zhi’s pheromones were like a sticky fog, carrying the unique aggression of an Alpha.
The dorm was very quiet. Tang Xingye lay on his side in bed, breathing evenly. Messy black hair scattered on the snow-white pillow, making his skin look almost transparent. His eyelashes cast dense shadows under his eyes, trembling gently with his breath. His lip color was a pale pink due to deep sleep, sunken in the soft duvet, looking a bit more obedient.
The usually cold and sharp Beta now looked like a beautiful crystal ball, fragile enough to make one want to cup him in their hands.
Lin Mo’s gaze lingered for a moment on the exposed back of his neck. On the cold white skin, teeth marks were red, and a patch of ambiguous suck marks haloed around them, looking exceptionally erotic under the light.
It’s a mark left by Lu Zhi.
Lin Mo’s face darkened abruptly. His fingertips clenched. Unable to bear it, he wanted to take out a wet wipe to clean it, but stopped abruptly just as he was about to touch that skin.
Tang Xingye trembled slightly in his sleep. His eyelashes were wet with tiny tear beads, glistening with fragmented light. A drop of sweat slid down his temple and disappeared into his hairline. Lin Mo’s gaze followed the track of that sweat drop, his Adam’s apple rolling unconsciously.
Having a nightmare?
When Lin Mo leaned over, he smelled the residual shampoo scent in Tang Xingye’s hair, mixed with a trace of faint cocoa. At this distance, he could see the fine down on the other’s face and the beads of sweat seeping out. The pale pink lips inexplicably made him want to crush them with his thumb to see if they would turn redder.
His brows were locked tight, eyelashes trembling uneasily, obviously trapped in a nightmare.
“Tang Xingye.” Lin Mo called out more softly than usual, yet retaining the signature coldness in his voice.
The person on the bed didn’t react; instead, he struggled more violently, lips moving soundlessly as if arguing with someone invisible.
Tang Xingye had been rushing experiments and harassed by Alphas releasing pheromones recently. physically exhausted. After drying his hair, he fell into a deep sleep as soon as he touched the pillow.
He was usually a light sleeper, but this time he slept heavily. A familiar, long-lost feeling struck him; he turned back into a little boy.
“Kids shouldn’t interrupt. We’re all friends; what IOU?”
“Oh my, Xingye costs money for school. Dad, give me some more money; I used this month’s for a startup.”
“You are Tang Xingye, right? The money your mom owes from playing cards hasn’t been paid back.”
Scenes played back like a rewound tape. Tang Xingye watched coldly.
Staring at those two familiar faces full of lies, he felt only anger and nausea. Yet he could do nothing. The surroundings blurred, and his heart beat faster.
“Tang Xingye.”
Calling twice more, Lin Mo’s fingers hovered a few centimeters above the other’s shoulder, ultimately not landing.
Seeing the Beta breathing rapidly, Lin Mo’s eyes darkened. He took a deep breath.
When he spoke again, his voice had changed completely—the first voice was a gentle baritone, like a steady elder: “Tang Xingye, listen to the teacher, breathe slowly.”
This was the voice of the psychology professor; Tang Xingye had mentioned liking this professor’s class last week.
He coaxed for a while, but Tang Xingye’s breathing remained rapid. Pale pink fingertips clawed messy folds into the sheet, knuckles turning white from force.
Lin Mo’s eyes moved slightly, switching to a second voice—a clear female voice, mimicking the Senior Sister Tang Xingye often mentioned: “Xingye, Sister is here with you.”
The person in the dream still showed no sign of calming down.
Lin Mo’s eyes dimmed. He continued to mimic Lu Zhi’s voice, but it was still useless.
The frustration in his chest eased a little. Heh, Lu Zhi is nothing special.
Looking at the tightly furrowed brow, he gritted his teeth and finally used the voice he was least willing to mimic—
A crisp, youthful voice, carrying sunshine-like vitality: “Xing Xing, it’s okay, it’s okay, I’m here.”
Tang Xingye’s brow suddenly relaxed a little, and his breathing gradually steadied.
Sure enough. Sure enough.
A sharp pain surged in Lin Mo’s chest. He hated this learning ability of his, yet he mechanically repeated the intimate nickname that Alpha often used: “Xing Xing…”
Lin Mo was about to continue when the person in the dream mumbled vaguely: “…Your voice… is so strange…”
Lin Mo froze.
Moonlight cast dappled shadows on his face through the window. After a long while, he returned to his original cold voice: “…But you like all of these.”
The only response from the sleeping person was even breathing.
“Tell me, who do you hate the most?”
No answer was needed; he knew the answer.
He had always known.
Lin Mo’s gaze fell on the small notebook beside Tang Xingye’s pillow. Picking it up, he didn’t flip through the earlier contents, flipping straight to the latest page.
[Why is the quota for this competition Lin Mo’s again! Hope Lin Mo gets unlucky recently!]
The handwriting was a bit scrawled, and the ink had smudged a small patch, as if the person writing was emotional and used too much force. Lin Mo’s fingertips brushed over that line of text. He closed the notebook calmly, put it back in place, looked at the finally peaceful sleeping face, and whispered:
“As you wish.”
The next morning, Tang Xingye sat up rubbing his eyes. A few strands of black hair stuck up, and his pajama collar was askew, revealing a delicate collarbone. He frowned in confusion, feeling like he had a strange dream last night.
“Seemed to dream of Lin Mo speaking in various voices…” He shook his head, talking to himself. The idea was too absurd.
As Tang Xingye was taking notes, news of a student from the same school getting into a car accident flew into his ears.
“Did you hear? Someone got into a car accident; it’s quite serious.”
“Right at the school gate. That driver looked like he aimed specifically at the person to hit…”
“They say there was a lot of blood. Three ambulances came…”
