Chapter 77: A Bit Bitter
The beastmen couldn’t help but feel a vague sense of worry at the thought of Yunxiao City falling into the wrong hands. If that happened, the entry fee would almost certainly go up.
“I hope Young Master Yun recovers soon.”
“Young Master Yun is like a banished immortal, such a good person. Nothing bad can happen to him!”
“Sigh, when Young Master Yun was young, his parents sacrificed themselves in battle to protect us beastmen in the north. He really is a pitiful soul!”
“The reason for his frailty lies in his mother’s pregnancy. She was attacked by a mutated beast, which disturbed the fetus. He was born prematurely and has been weak ever since, unable to even walk. He has to spend his days in a chair.”
“I heard the Beast Emperor originally intended to marry the Princess to Young Master Yun. But after the imperial physicians examined him and declared he wouldn’t live long, the engagement was called off.”
“What a shame…”
The crowd discussed and sighed, though no one dared to openly criticize the Beast Emperor. In their hearts, however, they all felt sorry for this Young Master Yun.
After listening to the gossip for a while, Su Muyao and her group reached the front of the line.
The fee was one bronze Crystal Coin per person, so they paid four coins in total. Once the fee was paid, they entered the city.
Upon entering, Su Muyao found the place remarkably similar to the ancient cities of her past. The streets were spacious, paved smooth and flat. Rows of buildings lined the roadsâmostly stone houses, though there were some wooden structures as well. Some of the shops were built entirely of wood.
Likely due to the market hours, the streets were bustling with people.
“It’s quite crowded. Wife Master, please be careful.”
Wen Nanxi carefully shielded Su Muyao, ensuring no one accidentally bumped into her.
Su Muyao hadn’t expected so many people this early in the morning. Not wasting any time looking around, she said, “Let’s go. We need to hurry to the market area.”
Soon, they arrived at the designated trading grounds. The market was located in the eastern part of the city and was incredibly spacious. It consisted of four main avenues arranged in a cross shape, with ample space for stalls on either side of every street.
They had arrived relatively early, so they managed to secure a spot near the center.
“This looks like a good spot.”
“Let’s get the things out.”
Su Muyao began retrieving items from her pocket dimension. Wen Nanxi and the other two immediately stepped in to help.
They set up a table and placed four woven baskets on top: one for the insect repellent packets, one for the hemostatic packets, one for the roasted melon seeds, and one for the brown sugar blocks.
Su Muyao glanced at Xiao Jihan. “These baskets are really useful. Thank you!”
Xiao Jihan had woven them himself. Su Muyao liked them a lot and felt she should express her gratitude.
A nearly imperceptible smile touched Xiao Jihan’s cold face. “There is no need for thanks, Wife Master. If you like them, I will weave more.”
“Let’s see how business goes today,” Su Muyao said. “If things sell well, we can make more and bring more stock next time.”
Doing business in the city was far more cost-effectiveâand saferâthan hunting in the mountains, provided they made a good profit.
“Alright.”
It was still early, but there were already plenty of people strolling through the market.
“Are people here to buy things this early?”
“Most of them likely live within the city,” Wen Nanxi explained. “They come out in the morning to buy ready-made breakfast or ingredients to cook at home.”
Su Muyao nodded in understanding. It was just like visiting a farmers’ market. The only difference was that this market was larger and had a wider variety of goods.
Su Muyao observed the crowd closely and lowered her voice. “Selling breakfast at this hour would probably be good business.”
Hua Linye followed her gaze to a stall across from them selling rice porridge. “It would be hard work, though.”
“For a stall like that, you have to get up even earlier to prepare the food.”
There were many breakfast stalls, and business seemed brisk. Some beastmen who had arrived early hadn’t eaten yet and were buying food on the spot.
Su Muyaoâs mind began to whir. If selling breakfast was profitable, she could technically come here every day to do it.
After observing for a while, she had a plan. She began to call out, “Selling brown sugar! Selling brown sugar! Free samples available…”
She knew that leading with insect repellent or hemostatic packets wouldn’t attract the morning crowd. The people rushing through the morning market were primarily looking for food. They didn’t know what melon seeds were and wouldn’t stop to look.
So, she used the brown sugar as bait. Once people were at the stall, she would find a way to promote the other items.
Hearing “brown sugar,” several curious beastmen approached. Sugar was a scarce commodity, usually quite expensive. The beastmen living in Yunxiao City were generally well-off; otherwise, they couldn’t afford to live here.
“It really is brown sugar!”
“Stall owner, how much are you selling this for?”
Su Muyao had already decided on the price. “Five bronze Crystal Coins a piece.”
She had learned the market rates from Wen Nanxi. Brown sugar transported from the south usually sold for six or seven bronze Crystal Coins per block. Even a small piece of malt sugar cost two coins. Her blocks were a decent size; five coins was a very fair price. It offered good value, so people should be willing to buy.
“Five bronze Crystal Coins? Are you sure?”
The male beastman who spoke was slightly surprised. His Wife Master loved sweets. He had bought sugar at a shop before, and a piece smaller than this had cost seven coins. This was significantly cheaper. Buying in bulk would save him a lot.
Still, he remained cautious. “Is your brown sugar authentic? Is it sweet?”
Su Muyao immediately took out a block and used a knife to shave off some small slivers for tasting.
“I offer free samples because I have confidence in our sugar,” she said with a warm, enthusiastic smile, handing him a piece. “It is absolutely sweet. Whether you dissolve it in water or use it to make cakes, itâs delicious.”
The man tasted it and his eyes lit up. “It really is sweet.”
“I’ll take twenty pieces.”
“Here is one hundred bronze Crystal Coins.”
The beastman was generous, fishing out a money bag and counting out the coins.
Su Muyaoâs eyes sparkled, and her smile grew even more brilliant.
Wen Nanxi and the others helped wrap the sugar blocks. Watching Su Muyao smile so radiantly at another male, they felt a strange bitterness in their hearts.
At home, they had never seen their Wife Master smile like that. So bright, so brilliant, so happy.
Yet, they had to admit she seemed completely natural at doing business, as if she were extremely familiar with it. But as the young miss of the Su family, she would never have set up a stall to trade.
Su Muyao continued to hawk her wares. “Authentic brown sugar, only five bronze Crystal Coins a piece! Great price, free tasting, no charge if it’s not sweet…”
Her crisp voice instantly attracted more customers. A crowd quickly gathered in front of the stall.
Wen Nanxi naturally took over cutting the samples and handing them out.
Su Muyao immediately seized the opportunity to promote her melon seeds.
“These are melon seeds. You can also taste them for free; no charge if they aren’t tasty.”
“Don’t look down on them because they’re small. They are great for cracking open and eating when you’re idle. You can also serve them to guests while chatting…”
“Female beastmen especially like this kind of snack. It’s like a dried fruit. The price is fair; everyone might as well give it a taste.”
