Part 2
From the beginning, Zong Hao hadn’t connected the dots. First, Young Master Bai came from the Garbage Star, which was so far away. Second, he had never heard that his sister had a child.
But linking it all together now, an incredible notion surged in his mind.
He lay there, forgetting to even move. His beast eyes quietly watched the father and son not far away, but a storm was raging in his mind.
His sister had left for several years. He was young at the time, and their father, afraid Zong Hao’s secret would be exposed, forbade him from leaving the Zong estate. So, for a long time, he hadn’t really seen his sister.
As if confirming Zong Hao’s guess, City Lord White spoke with nostalgia and melancholy. “It’s fortunate Marshal Zong is fine. Otherwise, the only person left in this world that your mother cared about would truly be gone.”
Young Master Bai rarely heard his father mention his mother. Thinking of his own identity, he rarely dared to ask, afraid of making his father sad.
Now, however, he was bewildered. “What does Mother… have to do with Marshal Zong?”
City Lord White: “Naturally, it’s because Marshal Zong is your uncle.”
Young Master Bai was completely stunned. After a long pause, he couldn’t hold back a high-pitched shriek. “What? What did you say?”
Ning Yunyi quickly covered the little kitten cub’s ears. Good heavens, first time I knew a rabbit could make such a piercing sound.
Nephew, does this count as a sonic attack?
Zong Hao forgot to cover his ears. His paws froze, his expression bizarre: So this rabbit, who does nothing but eat, is his… nephew?
His sister actually left a flesh and blood heir in this world?
Zong Hao looked at City Lord White, and suddenly understood why the man had chosen to leave rather than attend his sister’s funeral, and why he hadn’t returned in all these years.
If he was fleeing to protect Young Master Bai, who carried the same half-beastman genes, then it made sense.
Zong Hao lowered his eyes, his beast pupils filled with complexity. A very subtle emotion welled up in his heart. It turned out that aside from those brothers he wasn’t close to and his so-called nephews, he still had family in this world.
Because he didn’t feel he had any family he looked forward to seeing, he had turned a blind eye to the Zong family’s affairs.
When he was young, his father was already old. It was his sister who practically raised him. So in his eyes, even though there was no blood relation, in his heart, she was his real sister.
Now, looking at the gluttonous rabbit he had found annoying before, the guy instantly looked much more pleasing to the eye.
After all… this was the only bloodline his sister left in this world.
Young Master Bai was going through various stages of mind-blowing shock when he suddenly shivered. He whipped his head around and met the Big Cat’s practically loving gaze. He trembled in fright: Am I being pitied by a cat?
Young Master Bai immediately puffed out his chest, then deflated again. I actually have this kind of background?
Although Ning Yunyi had known for a long time, hearing it suddenly reminded him of Elias. Given the situation now, things must have been even more precarious decades ago. He simply stood up, picked up the kitten cub, patted the Big Cat’s head, and left the downstairs area to the father and son for the time being.
Zong Hao’s mood was complex, but he just gave them a deep look, stood up, flicked his tail, and followed. He needed to digest this news too.
Before, he felt indifferent. But now that his sister had a child left in the world, the Zong family couldn’t just be cheaply handed over to those so-called brothers and titular nephews.
After all, the only biological child of his father was him. Both his sister and the several brothers were adopted.
It was just that his sister was old enough to remember when she was adopted, so it couldn’t be hidden; she knew her origins.
The three brothers who came later were different; they were kept by his father’s side from a young age.
So, did those three so-called brothers… truly not know their origins? When they targeted his sister back then, did they really just feel she was hogging the Zong family’s resources?
Zong Hao hadn’t suspected it before. He was young then and couldn’t control his human form well, so his father kept him hidden on the grounds of poor health. There were many things he wasn’t clear about.
If he didn’t even know his sister had given birth to a child, then how much of what those brothers showed him was real?
Hearing about his accident, they immediately planned to seize the position of family head without hesitation. Before, he just thought he wasn’t close to his brothers. But what if they knew they weren’t biological sons and had feared losing their inheritance rights from the very beginning?
Ning Yunyi felt the Big Cat was acting a bit strange and pinched his ears. “What’s wrong? Shocked to hear Young Master Bai is Marshal Zong’s nephew?”
Zong Hao lowered his eyes and pressed against Ning Yunyi’s palm without moving.
Ning Yunyi raised an eyebrow. Goodness, being so proactive? This isn’t like the Big Cat’s usual style.
“Really shocked? It’s not that big a deal. After all, there are plenty of secrets in this world. It’s just a title.”
The little kitten cub was the calmest one. After all, he didn’t understand what “Marshal Zong” meant yet. He was just surprised that his cousin could… scream so sharply. It scared the cub to death.
Fortunately, the castle was soundproof, otherwise City Lord Xuan would have thought they were slaughtering rabbits inside.
While the Big Cat was in a trance, Ning Yunyi took the opportunity to pet him several times. Sure enough, after molting, he was much nicer to touch. The fur did justice to the good food and drink he had been fed all these years.
Sleek and smooth. Although he was still shedding a bit, the new fur was noticeably soft and fluffy.
Ning Yunyi even imagined that once the coat was fully replaced, burying his face in that fluffy softness on the belly would feel like sinking into clouds of cotton. Just thinking about that scene made him impatient.
Zong Hao finally snapped out of his trance. Looking up, he met Ning Yunyi’s thoughtful expression and the green light in his eyes. He shook his fur and abruptly took a step back.
Ning Yunyi gave him a calm side-eye: Why retreat? Once you finish molting, do you think a cat owned by a master can hide from the master?
When the two humans and one cat came down again, the White father and son had returned to normal.
Except Young Master Bai’s eyes were red. He looked a bit embarrassed seeing Ning Yunyi, especially since he might have scared his little cousin with his shock earlier. He twisted and swayed over, whispering something, and soon the big one and the small one were holding hands, getting along well again.
City Lord White stood beside Ning Yunyi, looking at this scene with emotion. “Brother, thanks to you, otherwise this child… probably wouldn’t have been saved.”
If that happened, he wouldn’t have any attachments left in this world.
Ning Yunyi’s mood was complex. In the book, he hadn’t appeared, hadn’t used spiritual energy to save Young Master Bai. The outcome for the father and son probably hadn’t been good.
Ning Yunyi changed the subject. “Brother White came at just the right time. I was actually planning to talk to you about something.”
He mentioned opening a branch store.
City Lord White had no objections. Since he was here for a few days, he could help set it up.
City Lord White was a man of action. Since Young Master Bai was the store manager, he immediately scooped up his son. “Go, accompany me to find City Lord Xuan to discuss the branch store.”
“Ah, ah! At least let me eat lunch!” My spiritual sustenance!
