Chapter 101 part 1
The City Hall shook as if the earth were overturning. The berserk mutant creatures rammed frantically against the walls, attempting to break through the siege and kill Shen Lin.
Their intelligence stemmed from the Plot Consciousness. Now that it had been fully unleashed, it followed the will of the original novel to obliterate every factor it felt it could no longer control.
Lu Wanqing was one of them.
Likewise, Shen Lin, who had completely replaced the Gu family and carried out a massive purge of key positions across the territory, was a thorn in its side.
Shen Linās expression remained unchanged. His profile was reflected on the broadcast screen as he stared unblinkingly at the synchronized updates flooding in from all sides.
An intelligence report with a five-star emergency rating popped up.
The gold in his irises deepened.
“Chief!”
Cui You pushed the door open, pheromones swirling around his body. He was uninjured, but his expression was incredibly grave.
The media team glanced at him and temporarily muted the livestream.
“The city’s power grid has been destroyed. City Hall’s defenses can hold for less than six hours. 99% of the Central District’s residents have reached the shelters. Please, you must evacuate immediately.”
He guarded City Hall without taking a step away, but from the corner of his eye, he watched the color drain from Shen Tiās face. Shen Ti’s silent endurance made his heart tremble with fear.
An Omega during pregnancy was fragile and brittle, needing constant comfort from their partner to get through it smoothly. He couldn’t abandon his post for personal reasons, and Shen Ti was too proud to leave his family behind and seek refuge alone.
“Xiao Ti.” Shen Lin took off his gold-rimmed glasses, his gaze gentle. He gave a signal to pause the camera, stood up, and walked to Shen Ti’s side.
“If you’re going to tell me to leave first, save your breath,” Shen Ti said, biting his lip. “I promised Shu Ci Iād take good care of you.”
Cui You couldn’t stand it anymore and pulled him forcefully by the waist into an embrace. “You still want to take care of others? Take care of yourself and the child first.”
Shen Lin’s eyes curved slightly. He handed the freshly printed documents in his hand to Shen Ti. “You go firstālisten to me, I’m not asking you to be a deserterāright now, you are the only one who can do this.”
Shen Ti took the folder and murmured, “This is…?”
“It is our dawn. Read it slowly on the way.” Shen Lin didn’t waste words. He turned to Cui You. “The Marshal’s orders have been sent to you. Your lieutenant will stay here with me. You go with Ah Ti and assist him.”
Shen Ti clutched the two thin sheets of paper that contained a massive amount of information.
As he processed it, he quickly clarified what he needed to do in his mind, then looked up, staring fixedly at Cui You.
“Will you assist me?” He pursed his lips. “I can’t walk anymore.”
Cui You couldn’t suppress the smile at the corners of his eyes, even in front of Shen Lin. He scooped Shen Ti up into a bridal carry. “Aside from superior orders, I listen to you the most. Say the word, where are we going?”
“Be serious, no smiling.” Shen Ti slapped the face that brightened up at the slightest bit of sunshine. “Where exactly is that island of Ah Ci’s located?”
Shen Lin watched them leave, reined in the smile at the corners of his eyes, turned back, and sat down at the desk like a deity returning to his altar.
He straightened his collar and turned on the microphone.
“Listen, we are not fleeing, and humanity has not reached its end. I ask everyone capable of basic pheromone release to assemble with the liaison officers under the golden flags.”
“Assembly Order No. 1 is effective immediately, regardless of gender. Those who have not yet reached the shelter zones can sign up via the livestream link.”
“Saving our homeland requires the strength of us all.”
The sea breeze of the Chengxin Sea was unlike its usual self; it was biting enough to tear everything apart. Lu Wanqing pressed his communication device with his fingertips and slowly narrowed his eyes.
“Communication cut off, right?” Zhao Qinfeng watched his movements and chuckled lightly.
He put down the video camera in his hand. “You deliberately lured me to this uninhabited place because you wanted to solve me single-handedly, didn’t you?”
“I did have that thought. To minimize casualties.”
Lu Wanqing tossed the unresponsive communication device not far away, pretending his plan had been seen through, and spoke with feigned helplessness.
At the same time, his materialized pheromones hid behind the device. As it fell, they lurked and moved behind Zhao Qinfeng.
He could feel the traces of the strike Shu Ci had left behind. That arrow mark must have hit near the main body, close to a fatal spot; otherwise, it wouldn’t have decisively detached from the body to regenerate a new form.
At this moment, he needed to be calm enough and stealthy enough to explore the weakness the Plot Consciousness hid beneath Zhao Qinfeng’s skin.
“Minimize casualties?” Zhao Qinfeng sounded like he had heard a joke. “You might not know this, but this is my territory. The one isolated and helpless right now is you.”
Lu Wanqing fingered a strand of hair blowing in the wind. This statement confirmed that the fixed point where the cold high-pressure appeared was related to the Plot Consciousness and the mutant creatures.
If nothing unexpected happened, this place should be the source of all the chaos.
“So what if I’m isolated and helpless?” He met Zhao Qinfeng’s gaze, calm and composed. “Just because you are the ruler of the world, you think I can’t deal with you alone?”
In a life where he was ignored, he was used to being underestimated.
But even when the plot ignored him, after repeating the cycle over and over again, he had finally completely reversed his fate once and stood at its end.
“I have made every resolve to stand here.”
Zhao Qinfeng’s head twisted. The skin on the side of his neck cracked open, and a silver-white creature slowly drilled out from beneath the skin.
“But you can’t kill me.”
Behind the silver-white slime was his grotesque smile.
“As long as they exist in this world, I am immortal.”
“Yes, pheromones can indeed kill them, but looking at the numbers, even if all the military’s combat power is combined, it would take at least five days and five nights to exterminate them all. And that’s assuming one-hit kills.”
“How can you guarantee that the moment you kill me, they are all dead?”
Lu Wanqing’s eyes darkened.
Indeed, if the silver-white creatures weren’t killed in one blow to their most fatal weakness, they would break apart and replicate, actually increasing in number.
His communications were completely cut off. He couldn’t maintain contact with headquarters, nor could he confirm the survival status of the mutant creatures in other places.
They lived attached to the earth’s crust; how could he judge if the roots had been severed?
“So, keeping me here is useless. You might as well worry about yourself.”
As soon as the voice fell, the flesh on Zhao Qinfeng’s arm melted instantly.
The wriggling silver-white creatures immediately covered it, transforming into an arm that snaked forward, striking rapidly toward Lu Wanqing’s jugular artery!
The pheromones hiding behind the communication device suddenly condensed into a prism shape and shot out viciously, pinning the vine-like arm to the ice.
“Ahā”
The sensation of pain hadn’t been fully stripped from Zhao Qinfeng, conducting along “Zhao Qinfeng’s” nerves to the brain.
It was going to discard this body!
After a roar of pain, the reporter’s human form before him ceased to exist. Slime squeezed out, dripping onto the ice and seeping into the snow.
Crack, crackā
Lu Wanqing stepped back alertly. Silver-white synapses sprouted from the blood flowing into the ice layer, stabbing toward him with the momentum of overturning the ice shelf.
The fissures in the ice grew larger and larger, reaching the end of the land.
The waters of the Chengxin Sea surged in through the cracks.
Lu Wanqing moved across the floating ice. His pheromones split into countless parts, wrestling with the synapses.
The team members he had dispersed seemed isolated in another dimension. His pheromones almost covered the entire ice plain, yet he couldn’t sense a trace of any other living human.
Lu Wanqing had never experienced such a one-versus-many battle. His body bore wounds rarely seen since his enlistment.
His blood was hot, and the energy accumulated in his glands was about to explode.
“Actually, you can’t truly dominate fate, can you?!”
Lu Wanqing dodged a spike aiming for his heart, rolled on the ice, and suddenly raised his voice.
“…” The Plot Consciousness abruptly stopped its attack.
“Or rather, the things you can influence are limited.” Lu Wanqing wiped the blood spilling from the corner of his eye, panting lightly.
“If there really was a ruler above everything in the world, then a single thought would be enough to make everyone die. Why would you need to go through so much trouble, racking your brains to kill me?”
