Chapter 81: Being Cherished
Xie Guixue looked at Su Muyao and slowly extended his hand.
Su Muyao watched his movement, unsure of his intention, but instinctively, she didn’t want to dodge. So she stood still, looking up at him.
Xie Guixue reached out with his slender, bone-like fingers and gently smoothed her hair, which had been disheveled by the wind. He tucked a loose strand behind her ear.
His touch was careful, but his fingers accidentally brushed against her skin. Su Muyao felt a cool, tingling sensation at the point of contact.
Because of the snow, her hair was slightly damp. Fearing she would catch a cold, Xie Guixue channeled a gentle heat through his fingers, drying her hair instantly.
His actions were soft and incredibly attentive.
He spoke in a soothing voice, “It is fine. You are tired; you need to rest.”
He could see her exhaustion. He couldn’t let her use her ability to heal him now. She needed to recover.
Hearing his words, Su Muyao’s heartstrings trembled. She felt a profound sense of being cherished.
It was the most genuine feeling she had experienced since arriving in this world. It felt pure, untainted by anything else. Just simple, unadulterated care.
Su Muyao wanted to say something, but Xie Guixue said, “They are coming. I must go.”
He tucked the ice crystal pendant back into her clothes. “Keep wearing it. It will protect you.”
“Don’t be afraid. Nothing will happen.”
“I will always be here.”
With that, he gave Su Muyao a deep look. Then, wind and snow surged, the black mist dissipated completely, and Xie Guixue vanished from where he stood.
Su Muyao wanted to speak, but her heart was in turmoil, her emotions chaotic. She didn’t know what to say.
Watching him disappear, she felt a sudden, inexplicable sense of loss. It was a complicated feeling.
…
The barrier that had split the street shattered. The sound of the carriage breaking echoed, and the separated space seemed to stitch itself back together, returning to normal.
“Wife Master!”
“Wife Master, are you okay?”
“Wife Master, are you hurt?”
Wen Nanxi, Hua Linye, and Xiao Jihan rushed over, checking her frantically. Their faces were pale, their eyes red, their auras unstable. They looked wretched, their bodies stained with blood.
Su Muyao looked past them to the dozen or so assassins lying dead on the ground.
The three men stared at Su Muyao, too afraid to speak, their hearts in their throats.
Wen Nanxi’s gentle eyes were filled with pain and self-reproach. Hua Linye’s fox eyes were red with bloodlust. Xiao Jihan, usually cold, looked frozen over, killing intent rolling off him in waves, his eyes flashing with a mysterious crimson light.
“Wife Master?”
Wen Nanxi’s voice was no longer calm; it was hoarse and filled with agony.
Su Muyao snapped out of her daze. “I’m fine.”
She didn’t explain what had happened, only that she was safe. Her expression was calm; she didn’t blame them.
But the calmer she was, the more panicked they felt.
Wen Nanxi rasped, “Wife Master, we failed to protect you.”
“You can do whatever you want to usโbeat us, scold us. It is only right that you blame us.”
Hua Linye handed her his knife. “Wife Master, stab me. It will make me feel better.”
Xiao Jihan moved his lips as if to speak, but no words came.
This time, they had truly failed her. They didn’t even know what had happened on her side. No matter how vicious the enemy’s methods were in separating them, it was ultimately their dereliction of duty.
Even if Su Muyao was fine now, it was likely due to luck. They didn’t dare imagine what would have happened if she had been hurt. All words felt pale and powerless.
Su Muyao looked at them peacefully. “I really am fine. You don’t need to blame yourselves.”
“The enemy wanted to kill me and calculated your strength, using a trap to separate us. It wasn’t your fault.”
Though she said this, Wen Nanxi felt a difference. She had never fully trusted them, and now, despite her calm appearance, she seemed wrapped in a layer of detachment. It was as if a wall had come up between them.
Wen Nanxi was panicked. He wanted to say more, but seeing her exhaustion, he whispered hoarsely, “As long as you’re safe.”
“You must be tired. Let’s go home.”
He asked nothing about what had transpired. He knew she needed rest.
Su Muyao was indeed tired and had no desire to continue shopping. She nodded. “Let’s go back.”
“What about these bodies?”
“Word has been sent. City Lord Yun will send someone to handle it soon.”
“Yunxiao City will investigate this and strengthen security.”
This meant the assassins wouldn’t be able to infiltrate so easily next time. Killing in Yunxiao City was a provocation to the City Lord’s authority. The rule was no fighting in the cityโthat was why it flourished.
Su Muyao nodded and dropped the matter.
On the way back, Wen Nanxi transformed into his snake form to carry her. He moved steadily, maintaining a careful speed to ensure her comfort.
Wen Nanxi wanted to speak, weighing his words carefully before saying, “Those were hired assassins. One of them used a technique that looked like it belonged to the Chen family of the Beast Emperor City.”
“I will find out the truth and kill everyone involved.”
He paused, then whispered, “Wife Master, I’m sorry.”
His voice was low and filled with disappointment. He radiated an aura of dejection.
Su Muyao, lost in thought, heard him and felt his mood. She knew they had tried their best. She could only blame the ruthlessness of the person behind the attack.
She couldn’t rely on anyone for protection; she had to become strong herself. However, having the pendant from Master Xie gave her a sense of security.
Having calmed down, the strange emotions from earlier faded. She softened her tone. “Wen Nanxi, you don’t need to blame yourself.”
“I know you tried your best.”
“And I shouldn’t have rushed into the street to save that cat. I didn’t know it was a trap.”
If it had been any other animal, she wouldn’t have reacted so strongly. But she had raised a cat in the apocalypse for years, a companion that had died saving her. It was a knot in her heart. Her reaction had been instinctual.
But this incident was a wake-up call. She needed power.
“No, Wife Master, don’t say that. It is my fault.”
If his body were healthy, he could have used a secret technique to boost his power and prevent this.
Su Muyao asked, “By the way, you came back late one day smelling of blood. Did you encounter assassins then too?”
Translatorโs Note: Hi everyone! The interaction between Su Muyao and her husbands is really starting to shift, isn’t it? And Master Xie… swoon. Enjoy the chapter! (This is one of my favorite reverse harem novels. I started reading this when the author has just published like a few chapters, and followed it throughout. At first, I really didn’t want to post it here because it’s from Qidian and what if they got an official English translation? I’m certainly hoping it happens for the author but also scared this gets taken down but in my head, since I’m already reading it, why not just share to others? LOL. This is certainly an enjoyable novel, and I can’t put it down)
