Chapter 39: Drunk
Dr. Li carefully examined the X-ray attached to the lightbox. With a flourish, he signed his name on the medical record, closed it, and handed it to Shen Yanjin. “Alright, you can go process your discharge.”
Shen Yanjin looked listless, his complexion even worse than right after the surgery. With dark circles under his eyes, he nodded lethargically upon hearing this. “Thank you, Doctor.”
Dr. Li gave him an extra glance. “Stayed up playing on your phone again last night, right?”
Shen Yanjin smiled. “No, just couldn’t sleep well.”
“Wrist still hurts?” With a doctor’s benevolent heart, Dr. Li naturally associated it with Shen Yanjin’s wrist. “Shouldn’t be. Your recovery is very good, and the rehab therapist also told me your condition is decent. What’s wrong?”
“No, it’s just…” Shen Yanjin couldn’t tell the truth, so he made up an excuse. “About to be discharged and join the team, I’m excited.”
Hearing this, Dr. Li glanced at him but didn’t say much, only telling him to protect it well and come to the hospital anytime if there were problems.
Shen Yanjin agreed to everything, taking the medical record and luggage to process his discharge.
It was deep winter, yet the sun shone brightly at the hospital entrance—a rare good weather. Stepping out the main gate, he saw Lu Hui standing by an SUV, shrinking his neck and blowing white breath. Seeing him, Lu Hui immediately smiled and waved high.
“Little Jinzi, what’s with you? Not treating me as a friend? Not saying a word about such a big thing like being hospitalized.” Lu Hui strode forward, first putting an arm around his shoulder to pat him, then consciously taking the luggage from Shen Yanjin’s hand. “I’ll carry it. Patients shouldn’t carry heavy things.”
Shen Yanjin was amused by his attitude. “I’m being discharged, not admitted. Doesn’t count as a patient.”
“About the same,” Lu Hui said. He was driving the same car he used to pick up Shen Yanjin from the airport. Opening the trunk, he put Shen Yanjin’s luggage inside. “Look at your face; you don’t even look human anymore.”
Shen Yanjin laughed. “Damn… can you say something nice?”
Lu Hui smiled. “My bad, my bad.” He paused, then asked, “Little Jinzi, you said in the group you’re going back to Cloud City. What’s going on?”
Shen Yanjin smiled faintly. “Wait until the restaurant; I’ll say it together to avoid repeating it later.”
Lu Hui saw he didn’t want to say much and nodded. The two got in the car and drove toward the agreed restaurant.
In the car, Shen Yanjin sat in the passenger seat, looking at the street view outside the window without speaking.
He was still thinking about that day.
That day, Shen Yanjin, blinded by lust, boldly wanted Duan Mingyue to let him taste some deeper sweetness over the phone.
For example, connecting via voice call, and then having him say or do some bad things to him.
Duan Mingyue was clearly moved too and had this thought.
But Shen Yanjin evidently underestimated the Moon God’s principles.
This time, he waited a long time without receiving Duan Mingyue’s reply. It wasn’t until the next day, when Shen Yanjin woke up uneasily, that he saw a new reply on his phone.
[KW-RedMoon: Contact me in advance when you come. The team reimburses flight tickets.]
Unlike voice messages, text was cold, with no extra emotions for Shen Yanjin to scrutinize carefully.
But Shen Yanjin could feel the coldness within.
Calming down then, he felt his intestines turn green with regret. His hint was already very clear; Duan Mingyue couldn’t have missed it. Such a reply was the most tactful rejection possible while preserving dignity for both.
Obviously, Shen Yanjin stepped on a line he shouldn’t have.
He sent a few tentative messages to Duan Mingyue later. Duan Mingyue’s replies were similar to usual, but once some things happened, pretending they didn’t happen wouldn’t make them pass.
Consequently, Shen Yanjin had been sighing and groaning recently, unable to even sleep soundly.
Just like in that dream, what exactly did he want to do? Even Shen Yanjin himself couldn’t figure out the answer.
After all, things done under the drive of desire couldn’t be understood with normal logic.
Now, Shen Yanjin got no benefits and planted an “improper” impression in front of his future captain.
Not shedding tears until seeing the coffin; only panicking when the knife hangs over the head.
Shen Yanjin reflected on himself and realized that by pushing the boat with the current and lying recklessly, aside from getting the chance to join the team, he gained no substantial benefits, only a pile of disadvantages.
In that case, why did he bother pretending to be a woman and asking Yue Fengling to act with him—although that result was shooting himself in the foot and acknowledging a cousin for no reason.
Fortunately, regret aside, Shen Yanjin could still distinguish priorities. With rehab mostly done, he sent a message to his old friends in the group, indicating he was about to leave Bincheng again for Cloud City.
Leaving without goodbye five years ago was his immaturity. After stumbling outside for a few years, Shen Yanjin’s biggest realization was: interests are easy to form, friends are hard to make.
So now he cherished this reunited friendship especially. Naturally, he had to say something before leaving and have a meal together.
Driving the car, Lu Hui saw Shen Yanjin looking out the window with a heavy heart, his expression alternating between annoyance and helplessness, sighing occasionally. It was hard not to overthink—just out of the hospital, surely he wasn’t diagnosed with some terminal illness?
Fortunately, it was just his imagination running wild.
Arriving at the restaurant, the others had arrived early as usual, and dishes were already ordered.
After exchanging pleasantries, everyone sat down.
Shen Yanjin didn’t plan to keep them in suspense and directly stated his next plans.
Shen Yanjin left home as a teenager, so raggedly, fighting tooth and nail to leave. As old friends, Lu Hui and the others naturally understood how important esports was to him.
Friends chasing dreams—besides blessings and support, they had nothing else to say.
Farewell drinks; everyone drank a bit too much. When walking out of the restaurant, Shen Yanjin was already drunk enough to lose his bearings.
But he had a trait: no matter how drunk, he recognized his home and could call a taxi and give the address himself. He was so worry-free it almost made people suspect he wasn’t drunk.
But Shen Yanjin was indeed drunk.
Under the taxi driver’s wary gaze, he paid and got off, dizzyingly opened his door with his luggage, put the luggage on the floor, and planted himself headfirst into the soft big bed.
According to normal behavioral logic, lying in bed now meant sleeping.
But Shen Yanjin refused.
He still remembered Duan Mingyue asking him to notify the time in advance. Dizzily fishing out his phone, he clicked open the chat interface with Duan Mingyue.
