Chapter 82: He Dreamt of the Past
That night, while Gu Huaiye was sleeping, he suddenly felt the mattress beside him dip slightly.
He opened his eyes immediately and realized someone was hugging him from behind.
“When did you get back?” Gu Huaiye closed his eyes again, shifting into a more comfortable position. “Done with military matters?”
“Afternoon.”
Xie Miaohan lowered his head and kissed Gu Huaiye’s shoulder.
Gu Huaiye’s expression shifted slightly.
Wouldn’t that mean he clashed with the time Chen Xialin visited?
Gu Huaiye broke free from Xie Miaohan’s embrace, turned around, and looked into the other man’s eyes.
“Did you run into Chen Xialin?”
There was no expression on Xie Miaohan’s face as he looked down, meeting Gu Huaiye’s gaze.
Being looked at like that made Gu Huaiye feel inexplicably flustered.
“He came by?” Xie Miaohan asked.
Gu Huaiye let out an “Ah,” then adopted a serious expression. “Yeah, he’s going back to District A, and who knows when we’ll meet again. He got dragged into this because of our issues. When he goes back, a lot of people might mock him, so I had to say sorry to him.”
“Some time ago, I sent wedding invitations to more than half of the prominent figures in District B, including the Royal Family whose arranged marriage I rejected. I also invited the media, intending to livestream it. In this life, I didn’t have our wedding photo, so I photoshopped one. It wasn’t very good, but it would have been enough to place at the entrance of the banquet hall for everyone to see.”
Gu Huaiye didn’t know why he was suddenly bringing this up.
The wedding sounded overly extravagant and wasteful. Xie Miaohan had only recently taken office; if he had really livestreamed it, it would have caused dissatisfaction among many people.
Seeing Gu Huaiye remain silent, Xie Miaohan laughed softly.
“Forget it. There’s no point in mentioning it now.”
Gu Huaiye would feel sorry for everyone.
Everyone except him.
Xie Miaohan pulled the person back into his arms.
“Go to sleep. I’m not angry that Chen Xialin came to find you. I was the one who let him in.”
A flash of surprise passed through Gu Huaiye’s eyes.
He smiled and hugged Xie Miaohan’s waist back.
“Thanks.”
Xie Miaohan gave a soft “Mhm.”
After a while, Gu Huaiye abruptly brought up another topic.
“By the way, can you tell me about your childhood?”
Xie Miaohan’s eyes darkened, and his voice involuntarily turned cold.
“Why do you want to know that?”
Gu Huaiye considered his words carefully before probing cautiously, “Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever heard you mention your childhood. I’m honestly a little curious.”
His understanding of Xie Miaohan’s past came solely from files and data.
He always felt that someone was maliciously smearing Xie Miaohan.
Climbing to this position, Xie Miaohan must have offended plenty of people who were just waiting to pull him down.
If the rumors were false, Gu Huaiye hoped Xie Miaohan could clarify those dark stains on his record.
Gaining the trust and support of the people would be beneficial for Xie Miaohan’s future development.
“I stayed in quite a few relatives’ homes.” Xie Miaohan curved his lips in a smile, as if putting on a mask to cover a heart that had long since shattered into pieces. “But I was pretty bad. I knew their families were poor enough as it was, yet I still stole a lot of money. When I got caught, they’d kick me to the next relative.”
Gu Huaiye’s eyes widened in shock. “Is that true?”
Xie Miaohan didn’t answer the question. He closed his eyes.
“I’m tired. I want to sleep.”
“Alright.” Gu Huaiye pouted slightly. “Goodnight.”
Perhaps due to exhaustion, Xie Miaohan fell asleep very quickly.
He dreamt of the past.
He was only six years old then. His parents had both died in an accident.
Carrying a small backpack, under the arrangement of the staff, he went to his aunt’s house.
To be allowed to stay, he took on all the household chores. He often stood on his tiptoes, leaning over the sink to wash dishes. He clutched a broom taller than himself, sweeping the floor with awkward movements.
He always wore an ingratiating smile on his face. Even if the very next second his drunken uncle slapped him to the ground, he would immediately scramble up, bow his head, and apologize.
He didn’t know what he had done wrong, but he knew that as long as he actively admitted fault, he could avoid a beating.
The apology had to be delivered with a smile.
Even if it hurt, he couldn’t cry, or it would anger the adults.
He thought doing this would satisfy them.
But they falsely accused him of stealing and chased him off to another relative’s house.
Changing to a new environment didn’t make his life any easier.
Beatings and starvation accompanied him through a long childhood, gradually making him numb, teaching him to live wearing a mask.
He also dreamt of his parents.
But all they gave him were their retreating backs, drifting further and further away. No matter how he chased, he couldn’t catch up.
His parents didn’t want him.
And neither did his lover.
Three months passed, and Xie Miaohan and Gu Huaiye got along increasingly well.
No arguments.
No cold wars.
They slept together almost every day, but aside from hugging, they did nothing else.
This calm and beauty almost made Gu Huaiye forget that he and Xie Miaohan only had nine months left before they parted ways.
One afternoon.
Xiang Wanxing brought Chen Zirui over to find Gu Huaiye.
The moment Chen Zirui saw Gu Huaiye, his face turned red.
Then he kicked Xiang Wanxing and spoke in a strange tone, “You hand it to him.”
Xiang Wanxing laughed, took out an exquisite invitation card, and handed it to Gu Huaiye.
“Want to be a groomsman?” Xiang Wanxing asked on behalf of a certain coward.
