Chapter 7: The King of Duck Kings at the Nightclub Top Stream
Guo Duoyu took the book from under his arm, unfolded it, and fanned himself. While cooling down, he asked Shou Jiaxun, “Hey, what did you mean by bringing him up here to negotiate? It has nothing to do with me, why say it specifically for me to hear?”
Shou Jiaxun shrugged and pouted, looking slightly helpless. “He wanted to talk to me alone. I figured, just in case he tries to ‘shade’ me for no reason, having you here could serve as a witness.”
“Oh.” Guo Duoyu curled his lip disapprovingly, tucked the book back under his arm, and pulled out his phone. “Witnessed it. Send it to you?” As he spoke, he pressed the video play button.
Shou Jiaxun craned his neck to admire it with him. The angle was tricky, and faces couldn’t be seen clearly, but the dialogue was crystal clear.
Guo Duoyu clicked his tongue in lament. “Look at this picture… my hand is really steady.”
“Steady. Human mechanical arm,” Shou Jiaxun nodded in agreement.
Guo Duoyu raised his eyebrows proudly and asked again, “Send to you?”
“No need.”
“Then I’ll delete it.”
“Tsk, don’t delete it! Such good stuff…” Shou Jiaxun shrugged with a rogue smile, bubbling with bad ideas. “Tomorrow, if he fights you for the guaranteed admission quota to a prestigious school, send this to the principal.”
“Makes sense.” Scholar Guo nodded solemnly and put away the crappy phone with the screen cracked into a spiderweb. “Told you early on that working at a nightclub isn’t reliable. Congrats on pulling back from the cliff’s edge, haha. Class is starting soon; I’m going downstairs. You staying a bit longer?”
“Stay for what… Do I want heatstroke?” Shou Jiaxun muttered incessantly in a low voice, walking toward the stairwell with Guo Duoyu under the scorching sun.
The two had just ducked into the cool stairwell when Shou Jiaxunâs phone buzzed twice with incoming messages.
They stopped. Guo Duoyu stood on tiptoe to glance at Shou Jiaxunâs hand. “Good guy, that was fast.”
Both messages were from the homeroom teacher, Old Deng. The first was a still photo of Shou Jiaxunâs nightclub badge.
The second: “Come to my office immediately!!”
Shou Jiaxun replied with two words as per custom: “Received.”
Then he turned his head nonchalantly and asked Guo Duoyu, “Can you help me find a place to live? I have to move out after I finish dropping out in the next two days. I need a place to stay.”
Scholar Guo frowned in surprise, clicking his tongue to advise, “It won’t come to that! Talk nicely to Old Deng. Since we’ve turned back to the shore, he won’t force you to drop out, right? Mainly, I feel the school won’t be willing to refund your tuition… half a year is a lot of money.”
Shou Jiaxun put away his phone and continued downstairs, instructing as he walked, “The key is to find something cheap. Leaking wind or water doesn’t matter; just don’t let it be more expensive than where you live.”
Guo Duoyu furrowed his brows and scolded lightly, “Think clearly. You can’t find many people in the whole country nowadays who don’t even have a high school diploma. If you don’t go to school, what will you do?”
“Oh! Right, also…” Shou Jiaxun added a condition with a start, “Find something closer to your home, so it’s convenient for me to beg for food at your place when I’m at a dead end.”
Guo Duoyuâs face looked increasingly depressed. “Ouch, why don’t you just hurry up and find a rich Alpha to marry!”
The two of them talked past each other, each speaking their own piece. Even as they reached the door of Old Deng’s office, they hadn’t reached a conclusion.
When Shou Jiaxun knocked and entered Old Deng’s office, Guo Duoyu sighed repeatedly and took out his phone. After some thought, he sent the video he took on the roof to one of his many “wives” in the class, adding a note: “Showing you something funny. Contains privacy, absolutely do not leak!”
Since it was private content, not leaking it was impossible.
However, this method of “leaking” was a bit different from uploading it to the public internet for the world to see. The main difference was that the parties involved usually didn’t find out until the very end.
And by the time Yin Xi realized something was wrong, it was already a week later.
Because “Huiye” seemed to have suddenly become a check-in holy land for their school gatherings.
Due to the sudden increase in very young high school big spenders, even the nightclub business showed a trend of being boosted.
Everyone claimed it was to support a classmate’s business, but in reality, it was just novelty seeking, satisfying curiosity.
“Omega top scholar sitting at tables to earn tuition, so inspiring!”
“Didn’t the school waive their tuition and give scholarships?”
“Family difficulties, maybe?”
“If there are difficulties, you sit at tables? Does sitting at tables solve problems?”
“Reject porn, gambling, and drugs, la la la la la.”
“Don’t judge others’ choices without knowing their suffering.”
“Holy crap, you guys are going to kill me with laughter, hahahahaha.”
Conversations with similar content played out repeatedly in various “Li Mai High School” group chats for quite a while.
Yin Xi was requested by name to sit at tables at “Huiye” for seven consecutive days by multiple Li Mai alumni, some he knew and some he didn’t. And every day, it wasn’t just one table.
He sold a lot of alcohol, and the money came in large amounts and very easily.
But this mindless, bizarre momentum truly made one feel uneasy.
So on the seventh day, Student Yin decisively submitted his resignation to the manager.
The establishment cherished talent, so naturally, they tried to persuade him to stay with kind words.
However, Student Yinâs mind was made up. He could forgo the salary for the last half-month; he didn’t dare work this shift anymore.
But after the unscrupulous establishment failed to retain Yin Xi, they actually displayed phrases like “International High School Genius Omega” and “Li Mai Top Scholar” on the nightclub’s official website’s “Top PR List.”
This act was truly wicked, but a place like a nightclub wasn’t a venue for conveying morality anyway.
How could they easily let go of a high-quality employee like Yin Xiâyoung, healthy, and carrying the halo of a top scholarâwho could boost a brand-new, powerful consumer group?
So, on the morning of the second day after Yin Xi resigned from “Huiye,” he received a withdrawal notice from “Li Mai.”
And before this letter, which was about to end his academic career, could even get warm, a campus broadcast echoed through the entire teaching building.
“Recently, it has been discovered that a current student of our school has been working and sitting at tables in an improper establishment. This student’s behavior has seriously damaged our school’s reputation, failed to live up to our school’s earnest teachings and cultivation, and has had a extremely negative impact on the campus image. After discussion by the school leadership, it has been decided to expel said student from the school roll and immediately remove them from campus. We hope all students will take this as a warning. Do not fail the youth’s lofty aspirations; you once promised to be the best in the world!”
When Yin Xi heard this broadcast, he was standing in the corridor leading to the Academic Affairs Office.
The stern words disseminating from the loudspeaker were like a basin of ice water dumped over his head.
Although the school didn’t name him, they refused to leave him any wiggle room.
Yin Xi froze in place, his hands and feet cold. There weren’t many students passing by, but it seemed as if every one of them was projecting sarcasm and ridicule at him.
The broadcast overhead hadn’t ended yet. The Dean’s loud voice outputted forcefully: “Effective immediately, strictly investigate leaving school at night! Without parental contact, going out is prohibited.”
Wails of anguish immediately filled the entire teaching area. Many people shouted in protest: “I f*cking never went to a nightclub! Never ordered a table-sitting O! …I’m wronged!”
Immediately after, an old song, “Reject Porn, Gambling, and Drugs,” resonated through the campus. The melody was earthy and low-class, but terribly brainwashing.
The feeling of suffocation in Student Yinâs chest intensified, and finally, his vision went black, and he silently collapsed at the entrance of the Academic Affairs Office.
At the same time, Student Shou Jiaxun, who had been dropped out for a week, was squatting behind a fruit stall in a convenience vegetable market in the old district, peeling rotten apples.
During a break in selling, the stall owner uncle turned to advise him, “Hey, stop peeling. No one will eat them even if you peel them.”
“For Guo Duoyu to eat.” Shou Jiaxun worked stubbornly, throwing the fruits with rot cut away into a large basin at his feet.
“If he eats it and gets the runs, I’ll have to pay to send him to the hospital.” The stall owner uncle stole a moment of leisure to light a cigarette.
Shou Jiaxun immediately switched his thinking: “Then I’ll eat it.”
The uncle laughed and cried, “This much? It’ll kill you.”
“I’ll boil jam and eat it slowly.”
“Doesn’t that still cost money for sugar?” The fruit stall owner curled his lip and complained.
President Shou was quite persistent: “How much does sugar cost? Five yuan is enough to boil a big pot.”
“Holy sh*t, eating jam by the pot? Hahaha!” Guo Duoyuâs dad leaned back and forth with laughter, cigarette in hand.
The place where they set up the stall was an open-air morning market for the convenience of the people. It was tax-free; doing business only required paying a small sanitation management fee.
But it could only stay open for half a day. The rule was to close up before noon, but in reality, there wasn’t much foot traffic after ten o’clock.
Guo Duoyuâs dad lifted a large mineral water bottle to take a sip, then poured some out to rinse his arms and cool down. “What do you want to eat today? Jianbing (savory crepe) or Guozi (fried dough)?”
Shou Jiaxun looked up, his face flushed red by the umbrella overhead. “Isn’t Jianbing Guozi delicious… why must I choose one or the other?”
A moment later, the uncle brought back two Roujiamo (Chinese burgers). “The Jianbing Guozi stall closed. Make do with Chinese burgers.”
“You can’t call it ‘making do’ when there’s meat. This is a feast.” Shou Jiaxun wiped his hands with a rag, took the roasted flatbread stuffed with minced meat, and feasted with cold water.
The fruit stall uncle chewed the flatbread in big bites with him, a hint of pity flashing in his eyes as he stared at the top of Shou Jiaxunâs head. “Hey, is there any news about your school refund?”
“Yes.” Shou Jiaxun chewed with his cheeks puffing out, replying vaguely, “Told me to go to the finance office tomorrow morning to sign. Once signed, they’ll transfer the money. They also told me to bring a bank card. So you have to lend me a card tomorrow.”
The uncle was puzzled. “You don’t have a card yourself? How about I take you to open one this afternoon?”
President Shou sighed. “I have one, but my dad is on the ‘Deadbeat List.’ I’m afraid the court has already linked my account to his. If the bank discovers a large transfer and freezes my account, I’m truly screwed.”
Uncle Guo sighed with him, then asked, “How much can the school refund you?”
Shou Jiaxun spoke frankly: “A little over thirty (thousand).”
“That’s not a small amount. When the money comes back, you can move to a better place.”
Shou Jiaxun curled his lip. “Three million a year, returning thirty to me for half a year. I really thank the principal and his whole family.”
Uncle Guo laughed loudly. “It’s good enough that they’re refunding you.”
Shou Jiaxun smiled sheepishly and nodded. “That is true. When the money comes back, let’s rent a ‘storefront’ and open a proper fruit shop as partners, what do you think?”
Uncle Guo paused upon hearing this, pondering for a few seconds. “Is it enough? Opening a shop requires renovation, water, electricity, sanitation, property managementâeverything costs money, and it has to be prepaid.”
“If it’s not enough, you chip in a bit? You definitely have savings.”
The uncle frowned hesitantly. “If we lose, we’ll lose everything.”
“Lose what? My ‘Positive Wealth Luck’ is excellent.” Shou Jiaxun was confident. “Don’t worry, Uncle! President Shou will take you flying. We will only profit wildly; we will absolutely not lose.”
