Chapter 61: Bai Jing’s Appearance
“Huh?”
Chen Jiamu’s outburst successfully elicited a gasp of surprise from the three other people at the table.
“Jia… Jiamu?”
“Aren’t you out of town?”
Bai Jing stood up, staring at him in shock. Wasn’t he in Su City? Why was he back in Beicheng?
“I…”
“I’ve been back in Beicheng for quite a few days.”
After exchanging a couple of sentences, Chen Jiamu sat down opposite him. The man opposite saw this and turned to Bai Jing. “You know each other?”
Bai Jing immediately scratched his head shyly. “He was my college classmate.”
He had thought Chen Jiamu wasn’t in Beicheng. Happening to hear that his uncle had a collaboration with the Chen family, he had eagerly tagged along.
He had thought he could use this opportunity to get in contact with Chen Cheng, but he hadn’t expected Chen Cheng to bring Chen Jiamu…
Now… he felt the shame of being caught red-handed.
“College classmates? Fate really works in mysterious ways.”
Bai Jing’s uncle smiled until his eyes were slits. The atmosphere in the private room became very harmonious. Seeing this, Chen Cheng realized this collaboration was practically in the bag.
Sure enough, thanks to the relationship between Bai Jing and Chen Jiamu, the negotiation went very happily.
After the meal, Chen Jiamu went to the restroom. Seizing the opportunity, Bai Jing took out his phone, walked up to Chen Cheng’s side, and mustered the courage to shyly ask for her contact information.
“Um, Sister, if you have any questions about this collaboration, you can contact me.”
“I proposed this plan, so I might be a bit more familiar with it than him.”
Bai Jing’s words piqued Chen Cheng’s interest. He looked the same age as Chen Jiamu, yet he was already this capable.
In contrast, Chen Jiamu did nothing but sleep and play games; she couldn’t find a single useful thing about him.
“I couldn’t tell; you’re quite impressive.”
Chen Cheng offered a compliment. Without thinking much, she took out her phone for him to scan. This scene happened to be witnessed by Chen Jiamu, who was just returning from the restroom.
Hiss…
Bai Jing was smiling so coquettishly…
It was just adding a friend on WeChat; why did it look like a marriage proposal?
Consequently, after the meal ended, Chen Jiamu stared at Bai Jing with a scrutinizing gaze.
Bai Jing didn’t dare say a single extra word, terrified that Chen Jiamu would ask him something.
After the contract was signed, the two drove back to the company. Chen Jiamu wanted to leave, but Chen Cheng insisted on dragging him inside to take a look.
Helpless, Chen Jiamu could only act like a shadow, following behind Chen Cheng and watching her rush about.
Finally, it was afternoon and time to get off work. Chen Jiamu ran faster than anyone else.
He had thought the internal competition at Li Qi’s company was intense, but he hadn’t expected his own family’s company to be even more of a grind…
“Running so fast? Is a ghost chasing you?”
Outside the company gates, Chen Cheng was amused by his behavior. Was he scared off just like that?
“No.”
“They’re just too intense, aren’t they?”
Sitting in the car, Chen Jiamu had mixed feelings. A complex emotion washed over him.
“Intense?”
“Is it possible that what you consider ‘intense’ is just their daily routine?”
“Jiamu, in a big city full of neon lights, if you don’t work hard, you’ll be eliminated.”
“And the reason you think it’s a grind is simply that you lack experience. The people in the company climbed up from the bottom; they are the strong ones who survived countless high-pressure situations.”
Chen Cheng’s voice was calm, as if she were just chatting about family matters with Chen Jiamu.
“What about you?”
“Sister, do you ever feel tired?”
“In such a high-pressure atmosphere.”
Suddenly having the topic turned on her, Chen Cheng was stunned for a split second. A moment later, she lowered her head to fasten her seatbelt. “I’m used to it.”
“After so many years, I’ve long gotten used to it.”
Chen Cheng said nothing, yet she said everything.
Chen Jiamu fell silent for a long time. Everyone was struggling desperately to live. Li Qi had a childhood that was a complete mess, but he was still working hard at life.
And Chen Cheng… she entered the company at twenty. Because so many family members were fighting to get in, she had no choice but to brace herself and move forward.
The Chen family favored sons over daughters; she could only move forward, climb upward…
Everyone was fighting with everything they had. He was the only one who could be willful, who could throw tantrums…
Besides him, he was the only one around him just eating and waiting to die…
Stopping at a red light, Chen Cheng suddenly felt the car was very quiet. Turning her head, she saw Chen Jiamu looking down, lost in thought.
“What are you thinking about?”
“Suddenly so quiet.”
Chen Cheng’s words pulled him back from his thoughts. Chen Jiamu let out a long breath of stale air. He shrugged with feigned lightness. “Just a bit sleepy.”
“Exceeded my exercise quota for today.”
Seeing he was fine, Chen Cheng relaxed and continued driving. But she didn’t forget to tease him: “Tired from just this? You’re too weak.”
“Find some time to exercise. Otherwise, it’ll be embarrassing if you can’t even pick up a girl who weighs eighty catties.”
Chen Jiamu couldn’t retort to that. Pick up a girl…
He didn’t even dare add one on WeChat, let alone pick one up.
If he did, that little lunatic would kill him…
Thinking of Li Qi, Chen Jiamu shuddered all over. You could mess with anyone, but never mess with Li Qi…
The two drove home in a good mood. But when they arrived in the main hall, they suddenly saw an unexpected person…
“An Yiyi?”
