Chapter 89: My Parents Have Come to Pick Me Up

Gu Huaiye picked up the ring on the nightstand.

Staring at the letters engraved inside, the rims of his eyes turned red, and sour emotions surged in his chest.

After a long while, he put the ring away in his suitcase, intending to take it to District A as a keepsake.

The servants in the villa made lunch for him. After eating, he dragged his suitcase to the villa entrance.

He stopped in his tracks, turning to look at the villa where he had stayed for over a year. An indescribable sadness filled his heart.

Gu Huaiye clenched his fist, steeled his heart, and got into the car Xie Miaohan had arranged.

After the driver started the car, he turned on the radio.

A warm, deep male broadcaster’s voice came through, his tone excited and joyous, announcing that their country had won another war.

The driver happily slapped the steering wheel, while Gu Huaiye’s expression grew heavy.

He hadn’t dared to watch the news, fearing he would hear bad news about Xie Miaohan.

According to the broadcast, this war had lasted nearly a month.

And Xie Miaohan had suddenly cut off contact. When he reappeared, he had wrapped himself tightly. Even when sleeping last night, he wore a thick sweater.

Just as Gu Huaiye was about to grab his phone to call Xie Miaohan, Chen Zirui’s call notification popped up on the screen.

He answered immediately. “What’s wrong?”

“Brother Gu, I asked for you,” Chen Zirui said. “Weren’t you always worried about whether something happened to Xie Miaohan a few days ago? I got the truth out of Xiang Wanxing yesterday. Fuck, just to get this bit of info, I was nearly tortured to death by him.”

“So what did you find out?” Gu Huaiye asked hurriedly.

“Xie Miaohan was hit by a grenade. Large areas of his skin tissue are necrotic. I guess it’s retribution for what he did before.”

“Impossible,” Gu Huaiye said. “Yesterday he clearly…”

Gu Huaiye’s voice stopped abruptly.

All the information aligned—wrapping himself tightly in clothes, taking medicine behind his back.

Gu Huaiye couldn’t even imagine how much pain Xie Miaohan must have been in yesterday.

No wonder his face was always so pale.

Gu Huaiye gripped the phone tightly, speaking rapidly, “Can you ask Xiang Wanxing where Xie Miaohan is right now?”

“I know where he is. There’s a celebration banquet tonight. As the Commander, he will definitely attend,” Chen Zirui said. “Xiang Wanxing and I will be there too.”

“Can you get me in? I want to see him.”

“But you don’t have an invitation…” Chen Zirui hesitated, then said briskly, “Forget it, whatever. Just come find me. I’ll sneak you in.”

“Okay, thank you.”

After hanging up, Gu Huaiye instructed the driver to go to the location of the celebration banquet.

On the way, the more he thought about it, the more wrong it felt.

He had been too sad yesterday, so he hadn’t scrutinized Xie Miaohan’s words.

Xie Miaohan said not to be sad for him, that everything was his own choice.

Chen Zirui took him to the Alpha restroom and shoved a prepared suit into Gu Huaiye’s hands.

“Change into the suit. Once inside the banquet hall, everyone will be wearing suits, so no one will notice you.”

Gu Huaiye took the suit, nodding at him with grateful eyes.

Chen Zirui felt his best friend was acting a bit strange. Sighing, he walked out of the restroom to guard the door.

Gu Huaiye came out changed, and Chen Zirui pulled him toward the banquet hall.

Halfway there, they ran into Xiang Wanxing, who was looking for Chen Zirui.

“Why are you here?”

Xiang Wanxing’s gaze moved down, landing on their tightly clasped hands. The veins on his temples throbbed violently.

Chen Zirui didn’t realize someone was jealous. He pushed Xiang Wanxing aside.

“We have things to do. Don’t block the way.”

Xiang Wanxing laughed in anger, grabbing Chen Zirui’s arm. “Shouldn’t you explain properly why you brought Gu Huaiye in? Do you know what kind of place this is?”

Gu Huaiye saw that Xiang Wanxing was unhappy and silently let go of the hand.

“Don’t be mad at Zirui. I begged him to bring me in,” Gu Huaiye explained. “I came to find Xie Miaohan.”

“Aren’t you supposed to be going back to District A?” Xiang Wanxing frowned, his tone not particularly good. “Since you’ve decided to leave, isn’t it better to make a clean break? Leading him on like this—isn’t it too cruel to him?”

Chen Zirui glared at Xiang Wanxing. “You’re going too far saying that. It’s not like Brother Gu wanted to come to District B.”

“Then what is he doing here now?”

“You…”

Gu Huaiye didn’t want them to argue because of him, so he quickly interrupted Chen Zirui. “You’re right. I really shouldn’t have come here.”

“Brother Gu…”

Gu Huaiye smiled at Chen Zirui. “Come visit me in District A when you’re free.”

Chen Zirui sensed that Gu Huaiye’s emotions were off. He held onto Gu Huaiye’s hand tightly, refusing to let him go.

Seeing them acting like they were parting for life, Xiang Wanxing pinched the bridge of his nose, getting a headache.

“Xie Miaohan isn’t in the banquet hall. He went to the rooftop to smoke just now.” Xiang Wanxing raised his arm, pointing somewhere. “Go take that elevator. It’s for waiters to bring up food; no one will notice you.”

“Okay, thank you.” Gu Huaiye turned to go to the elevator.

“Brother Gu, I’ll go with you.”

Xiang Wanxing pinched the back of Chen Zirui’s neck, gritting his teeth. “I was wondering why you were so proactive last night. Turns out you were fishing for information for your best buddy.”

Chen Zirui: “…”

Gu Huaiye rushed to the rooftop, searching anxiously for Xie Miaohan.

Suddenly, his gaze stopped at a certain spot, and his heart leapt into his throat.

Xie Miaohan was standing on the very edge of the rooftop, head lowered, looking down.

“Miaomiao.” Gu Huaiye’s voice trembled. “What are you doing?”

Xie Miaohan’s figure paused. He slowly turned around to look at Gu Huaiye.

The ledge he was standing on was extremely narrow; one slip and he would fall.

As Xie Miaohan turned around, Gu Huaiye felt like he was going crazy, his nerves pulled taut.

“Why are you here?”

Xie Miaohan’s face was blown bloodless by the cold wind. His shirt had two buttons undone, and Gu Huaiye saw the uneven skin, distorted enough to be shocking.

He stared at Xie Miaohan’s scars in shock, then said carefully, “Miaomiao, I know everything. It doesn’t matter if there are scars; you’re still beautiful.”

Xie Miaohan was silent for a long time, then suddenly said, “My parents have come to pick me up.”

“What?”

Xie Miaohan curved his lips, his expression revealing happiness.

“I finally dreamt of their faces. It’s been over ten years, and I can finally see them.” Xie Miaohan smiled. “Huaiye, I’m leaving with them.”

Listening to his words, Gu Huaiye couldn’t help but cry out.

“Miaomiao, don’t be like this. Come down first, okay?”

Xie Miaohan shook his head. “I’m too tired.”

Xie Miaohan died on the spot. Gu Huaiye was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Although his whole body was protected by Xie Miaohan, the floor was simply too high, and his internal organs were severely damaged.

He was resuscitated for several days. He woke up once in between and saw Father Gu, whose hair had turned completely white, looking ten years older.

Gu Huaiye fainted again, and this time, he couldn’t be brought back.

Gu Huaiye opened his eyes.

A stinging pain came from his brain, making him arch his back in discomfort.

When it finally passed, he lifted his head and looked around.

It was a very unfamiliar environment. The streets were dirty and dilapidated, the buildings crowded close together—architecture he had never seen in District A.

The passersby were dressed in a style that seemed a bit off, holding retro flip phones in their hands.

Where was this?

Was he reborn, or had he time-traveled?

Before he could react, a small figure suddenly crashed into him.

Without apologizing, the figure picked up the bun that had fallen on the ground and continued to run forward, stumbling.

“Thief! Don’t run!” A fat man wearing an apron and oversleeves chased behind. “You little brat, wait till I catch you; I’ll beat you to death.”
