You Claimed You Didn’t Love Me, So Why Cry Now That I’m Engaged? Chapter 93

Chapter 93: Lying Children Aren’t Good

Gu Huaiye found a new hotel and booked a room with two beds.

Xie Miaohan, carrying his little schoolbag, looked around with wide, beautiful eyes full of curiosity.

Gu Huaiye unpacked briefly and noticed Xie Miaohan tentatively stroking the bedsheets. He couldn’t help but smile.

“If you want to sleep, just hop on,” Gu Huaiye said, rubbing the boy’s head. “I’m going out for a bit. Wait for me here.”

Xie Miaohan’s relaxed expression instantly tightened. “Where are you going?”

“I have some business to attend to.”

Xie Miaohan immediately scrambled off the bed and grabbed Gu Huaiye’s hand.

“I’ll go with you.”

“Aren’t you tired?” Gu Huaiye asked gently. “If you’re sleepy, you can take a nap first. I’ll be back very soon. I’ll buy you whatever you want to eat.”

“I’m not sleepy.” Xie Miaohan shook his head vigorously, his small hand gripping Gu Huaiye tightly as if terrified he would be shaken off. “I’ll go with you.”

Gu Huaiye tried to persuade him patiently for a long time, but Xie Miaohan refused to stay behind. His grip only tightened until his fingernails were nearly digging into the back of Gu Huaiye’s hand.

“Alright.” Gu Huaiye sighed helplessly and compromised. “But you have to be good and not run around, okay?”

He didn’t know where the kid got so much energy.

Every time he ran, he was impossible to catch.

“I’ll be good,” Xie Miaohan emphasized. “I’ll listen to everything you say.”

Hearing this, Gu Huaiye’s expression faltered slightly.

It felt like he had said something wrong.

Children at this age were naturally mischievous.

Gu Huaiye remembered that when he was six or seven, he often took Chen Zirui to sneak into the neighbor’s yard to provoke the Border Collie tied up there.

Getting into trouble was a daily occurrence.

He was a little tyrant that even dogs despised.

Even Gu Huaiye’s father couldn’t stand him, often threatening to send him away.

“Actually, forget it. You don’t have to be good,” Gu Huaiye said, crouching down to eye level with Xie Miaohan to comfort him. “You don’t need to try to please me now that you’re with me. Just do whatever you want.”

Xie Miaohan bit his lip and didn’t answer.

Gu Huaiye took Xie Miaohan to a pharmacy and asked the pharmacist to examine the injuries on Xie Miaohan’s body.

When he pulled up the pant leg and saw the cigarette burns, Gu Huaiye’s eyes reddened. He turned away to wipe his tears.

He was furious.

He should have put that old bastard in the hospital.

“Does it hurt?” the pharmacist asked while applying medicine.

Xie Miaohan shook his head, his eyes fixed on Gu Huaiye, a trace of confusion on his face.

This uncle was really strange.

Why was he crying?

He clearly wasn’t a relative, and they hadn’t known each other long.

Was he just soft-hearted toward pitiful children?

Gu Huaiye carried a bag of medicine prescribed by the pharmacist in one hand and held Xie Miaohan with the other.

“What do you want to eat?” Gu Huaiye decided to make it up to Xie Miaohan properly. “Anything is fine. You don’t have to be polite with me.”

Xie Miaohan swallowed, then shook his head. “I’m not hungry.”

Gu Huaiye looked down at Xie Miaohan’s profile.

Sensible children probably learned to say the opposite of what they meant subconsciously.

Gu Huaiye didn’t press him further. He dragged him straight to a restaurant and ordered four dishes and a soup in one go.

“Eat,” Gu Huaiye said, wiping the chopsticks with a tissue before handing them to Xie Miaohan. “Don’t hold back. If we can’t finish it, it’ll just go to waste.”

Xie Miaohan glanced tentatively at Gu Huaiye. Under Gu Huaiye’s gentle smile, he finally relaxed a little and piled his bowl high with food.

Gu Huaiye thought he just wanted to secure the best food and was wondering if he should correct this habit. But in the next second, Xie Miaohan suddenly took his bowl, left the table, and crouched on the floor to eat.

The action was so bizarre that the surrounding customers cast looks of curiosity and disdain.

Gu Huaiye finally realized what was happening, and his heart felt like it was being squeezed by a ruthless hand.

Was this Xie Miaohan’s childhood?

Living without dignity, humble to the dust.

He didn’t know how Xie Miaohan had survived it all.

Anyone who went through this would be psychologically scarred.

Perhaps the extreme things Xie Miaohan did later in life were influenced by this environment.

Gu Huaiye blinked rapidly to stop the tears from falling.

He walked over and pulled Xie Miaohan up. “Did your uncle require you to eat like this?”

“I won’t get beaten this way.” Xie Miaohan paused, looking nervously at Gu Huaiye. “Is Brother angry?”

“I’m not angry.” Gu Huaiye led him back to the table and sat him down. “Don’t eat like that in the future; it’s bad for your stomach. Also, I’m only about twenty. Call me Brother.”

Xie Miaohan immediately corrected himself. “Brother.”

“Good boy.” Gu Huaiye used his chopsticks to place a chicken leg—which Xie Miaohan hadn’t dared to touch—into his bowl. “Here, have a chicken leg too.”

“Thank you, Brother.”

Gu Huaiye chuckled, thinking the kid was quite sharp.

After the meal, Gu Huaiye took Xie Miaohan to the black market to get IDs.

This was the benefit of District H: loose regulations meant money could solve anything.

To avoid suspicion regarding their identities, Gu Huaiye had to change their names slightly.

Watching the characters being typed out, Xie Miaohan threw a tantrum for the first time.

“I don’t want to change my name!” Xie Miaohan became emotional, his voice rising. “This is the name my mom and dad gave me! I won’t change it!”

“It’s just changing the surname.”

“No! I don’t want to!”

Gu Huaiye had no choice but to change his own.

Staring at the name “Xie Huaiye” on the ID, he felt inexplicably guilty.

It felt a bit like treason against his ancestors.

But since he had time-traveled, his father would surely understand, right?

On the way back to the hotel, Gu Huaiye smiled and said to Xie Miaohan, “So you know how to read. Do you want to go to school?”

Xie Miaohan’s eyes lit up, but they quickly dimmed.

“I hate studying.”

Gu Huaiye frowned and deliberately teased him, “Lying children are the naughtiest.”

Xie Miaohan was indeed bluffed and quickly corrected himself. “I want to study, but school requires buying lots of things. It costs a lot of money.”

“As long as you want to, I’ll solve the rest.”

Xie Miaohan suddenly stopped walking.

“What’s wrong?” Gu Huaiye stopped as well, looking down at him.

“Why are you so good to me?” Xie Miaohan hung his head, his voice muffled. “They say I’m a jinx. Anyone who treats me well will be cursed to death by me.”

Gu Huaiye felt a pang of distress.

Those people deserved to die for saying such things in front of a child.

Gu Huaiye thought for a moment, then squatted down to look at Xie Miaohan.

“Don’t listen to their nonsense. They’re just jealous of you. You’re definitely a little lucky star, the kind that brings good fortune to people.”

Xie Miaohan clenched his fists and asked softly, “Then will you die? Will you be like my mom and dad?”

“Everyone dies eventually.” Gu Huaiye’s gaze was tender. “But I will try my best to stay with you for a long time.”

He didn’t know how long this time-travel experience card would last.

After all, this world already had a Gu Huaiye; they certainly couldn’t exist simultaneously.

Right now, the age difference meant it wouldn’t cause too much impact, but in a few years, when this world’s Gu Huaiye grew up and his appearance set, it would cause a lot of trouble.

Especially if someone found out they shared the same DNA—it would cause chaos.

Still, he prayed he could stay a little longer. Ideally, until Xie Miaohan graduated from college.
