Chapter 62
The map loaded, the preparation countdown ended, and the TWG members left the spawn point.
In their headsets came the sound of waves crashing against reefs, seagulls crying overhead, and the rustling of leaves. Everything was so real and peaceful, as if one could smell the salty humidity of the sea just by twitching their nose.
“Just starting out, KW will definitely want to hold the position at Villa Point A. The indoor terrain isn’t conducive for snipers, so their sniper must be lurking outside,” Xu Ziyan said. “Seamy, you flank around the back. Chen, come with me. Captain…”
He paused for a moment before continuing, “Go up first. Keep an eye on the enemy positions for the team.”
The terrain of Morgan Manor was too unique. The villa was the highest point, and aside from a small, exposed gazebo next to the villa, there were no other high grounds.
Therefore, the sniper couldn’t climb to a high vantage point at the start to observe enemy movements through the scope like on other maps.
Xie Wei agreed, spotting a position among the rocks nearby. He left the main road and leaped up, climbing the cliff in a few swift moves. Hugging his sniper rifle, he lay prone on the ground, using the grass for cover as he opened his scope. “Medic and Alice are on the first floor of the villa. Don’t know the movements of the Sniper and the other Assault…”
Before he could finish, he sharply sensed danger. His fingers twitched, executing a roll.
Bang!
A sniper bullet grazed past, practically sticking to his face, leaving a smoking bullet hole in the grass.
“…Sniper is on the coconut tree at 270 degrees.”
Down below, Xu Ziyan also heard the noise. “You okay?”
“I’m fine.” Since his position was exposed, Xie Wei stopped hiding. He stood up and raised his gun to return fire. The shot didn’t land a headshot, but it took away more than half of the KW sniper’s health bar. He frowned slightly, subtly rotating his mouse-holding wrist. “But my position might have been exposed a bit early.”
Xu Ziyan asked, “Seamy?”
Shen Xiao replied, “I’m in position.”
Xu Ziyan said, “Then start the operation early.”
“This should be the first time we’ve watched a TWG match since the new version update,” Commentator B said. “I originally thought Player Ice would choose the currently mainstream Healing Sniper Rifle for this game, but in this match, he’s still carrying the old Healing Assault Rifle.”
Commentator A said, “It is indeed a bit disappointing! Not only that, Ice’s secondary loadout is still the healing bottle and armor pack; there’s no taser. Although it might not be good to say this, the flashy maneuver of a Medic carrying a taser to cut the backline and touch butts was started by Player Ice. After this version buffed the taser, not seeing Ice use it feels like missing out on the show I was looking forward to most.”
Commentator B: “It’s not surprising. The survival environment for Medics is worrying; there are too few occasions where they can bring out a taser.”
Commentator A nodded. “That is true. Oh? We can see that after God Xie repelled the lurking Bee just now, Seamy immediately crept up from behind. That was quite a long detour!”
“However, it’s clear this detour was valuable. Seamy has walked into a range where he can see Bee. If this continues, Bee will be in danger. Luckily, Pride appears at this moment! Using a taser to root Seamy in place—wait, when did he appear in the woods? Wasn’t he just in the villa?!”
With a crisp sniper shot, the taser-controlled Shen Xiao was taken down by Bee with a single shot, powerless to fight back.
Shen Xiao was dumbfounded. “What’s the situation with this Medic? Moves like a ghost! Scared me to death!”
Xie Wei, however, had sorted out the sequence of events in a short time: He saw Pride in the villa and told the team, followed immediately by Bee’s ambush. Naturally, attention shifted from inside the villa to the sniper duel in front of him, and he stopped paying attention to Pride’s movements.
Although Bee was forced back later, Xie Wei, worried about being ambushed, found a relatively safe hiding spot and kept his sniper rifle trained on Bee’s direction, waiting for Seamy to flank.
So, Pride took advantage of this gap to silently move from the villa to the woods, successfully camping Shen Xiao who arrived a step later.
From the initial baiting to diverting attention, to the subsequent counter-ambush. It could be said that all their tactics were completely seen through and utilized by KW.
But…
If his shot hadn’t hit Bee’s shoulder but his head instead, none of the messy aftermath would have happened.
Xie Wei closed his eyes, trying his best to expel these distracting thoughts from his mind. He pulled the bolt to reload and shifted positions to avoid being caught by the KW members rushing over.
“My bad,” Xu Ziyan’s tone carried regret. “When Alice didn’t come out to chase the Captain just now, I should have known it was a trap.”
Shen Xiao drank some water while waiting to respawn. Hearing this, he said nonchalantly, “Hey, it’s normal! The opponent is one step ahead, we were one move short. It’s just the beginning; we’ll earn it back in a bit.”
Xu Ziyan said, “Mm.”
Shen Xiao added, “If it really doesn’t work, we can just hit them head-on.”
Indeed, KW was obviously well-prepared for flankers. Rather than twisting and turning, it might be better to attack directly.
But saying it is one thing; to enter the villa, besides withstanding the frontal barrage, Bee’s sniper position had to be dealt with.
Actually, having Xie Wei pin down Bee to apply pressure would work too.
But Xu Ziyan said, “No, Seamy, you flank again.”
Shen Xiao was confused, but he wouldn’t actually question the in-game shotcaller during a match. He said dubiously, “OK.”
Xu Ziyan added unhurriedly, “This time, I’m going with you.”
“Seamy flanks again!” Commentator A exclaimed in surprise. “I thought TWG would choose to give up flanking and switch to a frontal breakthrough after the setback. After all, everyone knows TWG’s style is never liking to fall in the same place twice.”
Commentator B: “Today is obviously different. Seamy flanks… Oh? Not only that, Ice followed him.”
“TWG only left Shining and Chen on the front line. Shining still took the side mountain path, and Chen is still waiting at the rear of the front for support. This is the correct choice; without Medic support behind, rushing in rashly will only feed kills.”
“Seamy and Ice are in position. Shining also found a hiding spot on the side to hold an angle. Clearly, KW thought the same as us this time, expecting a frontal rush. Both Assaults are waiting in full battle array at the front intersection. Pride brought a sniper rifle, likely for insurance, and he still chose to go to the backfield to protect Bee.”
“But what he absolutely didn’t expect is that TWG’s target this time isn’t Bee, but him!”
At a corner not far away, Pride’s figure appeared on the screen. His positioning was careful, sticking to the blind spots behind the woods. If Xu Ziyan and Shen Xiao hadn’t intentionally camped here, they probably wouldn’t have noticed him at all.
“He’s here.” Xu Ziyan took out a healing bottle. Without a shred of hesitation, the moment Pride walked into range, he smashed the bottle directly at him.
The crisp shattering sound effect exploded in the headsets. Pride was startled and rolled sideways with extremely fast reactions, but Xu Ziyan and Shen Xiao’s line of fire tracked his movements even faster.
Bee turned to provide sniper support, hitting Xu Ziyan in the head with a clean shot. However, the kill notification he anticipated didn’t pop up.
It was an armor pack.
Pride fell, and Bee, who had leaned out to snipe Xu Ziyan, was taken out by Xie Wei.
The two Assaults in the villa turned back to support. Xu Ziyan moved unhurriedly, using the woods as cover to top up his health bar.
Simultaneously, Bai Chen provided timely support from the front. KW was attacked from front and rear, and having lost the support of Pride and Bee, Point A was successfully taken by TWG.
“That play by Pride was really a classic case of being too clever for one’s own good,” Commentator B said. “Although Bee’s strategic position is important, if he hadn’t been killed, he might have been able to stall for time.”
Commentator A joked, “Can’t be helped. Since the playoffs, Pride has dazzled opponents with various tricks. But in this game, the person opposite him isn’t just anyone—it’s Ice, the progenitor of the insidious playstyle. I still remember that flanking spot-snipe at the Harbor that left everyone dumbfounded. His sense for this kind of flanking is definitely sharper than the average person.”
Commentator B laughed. “The root of all evil.”
TWG successfully captured Point A. Point B, due to terrain issues, became a tangled back-and-forth struggle with KW. It dragged on until the final ten seconds, when Xie Wei executed a beautiful chain-snipe, killing two and finally winning the team the chance to descend the mountain and capture the point.
The first round went to TWG.
The word VICTORY floated on the screen. Xie Wei let out a breath and released the mouse, his wrist already throbbing faintly. He stood up to return to the lounge with the team. On the way, Xu Ziyan quickened his pace to catch up.
“Captain,” the young man lowered his voice, “I have something to say to you.”
Xu Ziyan was rarely this secretive. Xie Wei paused, subtly reviewing his operation in the last game. He didn’t think there were any flaws, and the final play was actually quite a highlight. So, suppressing his confusion, he followed.
The room next to the lounge was originally used for storing sundries and props, and it happened to be empty right now.
Xie Wei followed him in, quietly closed the door, and looked up at the Omega before him. “What’s wrong?”
Xu Ziyan bit his lip and said, “The first match I commanded… we won.”
Xie Wei thought, Is he asking for a reward? He said, “Mm, you were great.”
“Then for the next match, can I command as well?”
Xie Wei was stunned. Looking at the young man in front of him, he realized Xu Ziyan probably knew something. Keeping his expression composed, he chuckled softly. “What is it? Trying to usurp the throne so early? I haven’t retired yet.”
Xu Ziyan took a step forward and grabbed Xie Wei’s right wrist. Lowering his head and eyes, he used his fingers to massage the sore spot in circles.
He didn’t answer Xie Wei’s teasing joke, only saying, “If we win the next match too, then leave the match point command to me as well.”
“If we win the match point and TWG successfully enters the finals…”
“Then I should count as a reliable player with some ability, right?”
Xie Wei heard the shift in his tone and frowned slightly. “Yan Yan…”
“When that time comes, can you agree to a request?” Xu Ziyan looked up, meeting his eyes directly. “In the future, if something happens, tell me first. Don’t hide it from me.”
Xie Wei felt as if his heart had been pricked gently by a needle.
He held Xu Ziyan’s hand in return. A thousand words welled up in his heart, but in the end, he only nodded. “Okay.”
