Chapter 62: The Fake Princess and His God of War Prince (19)
Most importantly, according to Xiang Yinnian’s intention, even if this empire was seized, it was to be handed over to Xiao Ji on a silver platter. But Yu Qing didn’t mention this.
What Xiao Ji found most annoying was reasoning with people about obvious truths.
If Xiang Yinnian had this intention, it would never be solely because of Xiao Ji. A war between the Northern Border and the Great Yue was inevitable; it was just a matter of time.
He, Xiao Ji, was just a catalyst. Yu Qing couldn’t fail to understand this. What she was resentful about now was simply that Xiang Yinnian appeared to be doing all the hard work for Xiao Ji’s benefit.
Xiao Ji remained unruffled. “General Yu, what did you call Ben Gong?”
Yu Qing: “Princess.”
Xiao Ji nodded. “Call me Wangfei from now on.”
Yu Qing nearly crushed her silver teeth. “Last night, why did the Wangfei speak such divisive words?”
Xiao Ji said, “General Yu is mistaken. Ben Gong was reminding the Wangye to prevent trouble before it happens.”
Yu Qing wanted to say more, but Xiao Ji had clearly begun to lose patience:
“For the sake of General Yu’s wholehearted devotion to the Wangye and the soldiers of the Northern Border, Ben Gong has no intention of holding it against you. But if you continue to act insubordinately, Ben Gong will flay you alive as a warning to others.”
Yu Qing knew that based solely on that sword thrust she used to test Xiao Ji earlier, Xiao Ji had absolute justification to punish her.
But she didn’t regret it.
Xiang Yinnian was blinded by Xiao Ji, but for Yu Qing, she didn’t deny she had selfish motives. However, she cared more about Xiao Ji’s identity.
At least for now, she couldn’t treat a Princess from the Great Yue Imperial Palace as one of the Northern Border’s own.
So she retorted once more:
“I ask the Wangfei not to do anything detrimental to the Northern Border or the Wangye. Otherwise, even if this subordinate has to sacrifice her life, I will absolutely…”
Before her voice could fall, the next second, a sharp pain struck her neck.
Xiao Ji stood barefoot in front of her. Because he was significantly taller than Yu Qing, he looked down at her from above, holding a sword horizontally against her throat.
Yu Qing’s pupils instantly contracted.
Xiao Ji’s speed exceeded her expectations, for one. More importantly, what Xiao Ji was holding in his hand right now was her own sword.
Bright red blood spilled from Yu Qing’s neck. Yu Qing stared wide-eyed, not moving. A chill spread from her heels to her spine.
If Xiao Ji had intended it just now, her head would have already fallen to the ground.
Xiao Ji casually tossed the sword onto the ground and turned around:
“Get out.”
…
Xiang Yinnian returned to the Wangfu before dinner was ready. He entered the flower hall but didn’t see Xiao Ji, only Lianqiu and a group of servants guarding the hall.
Xiang Yinnian looked at Lianqiu:
“Where is your master?”
Lianqiu looked at Xiang Yinnian. “Replying to the Wangye, the Wangfei is in the Lake Heart Pavilion.”
Xiang Yinnian frowned. “Why didn’t you invite him to dine?”
Lianqiu lowered her eyes. “Replying to the Wangye, the Wangfei said he is very full.”
“Very full?” Xiang Yinnian didn’t grasp the key point at the moment and asked foolishly, “Did he eat too much at lunch? or did he eat too many snacks this afternoon?”
Lianqiu spoke bluntly, “Neither. It is just that this afternoon, General Yu went to see the Wangfei.”
Xiang Yinnian couldn’t understand even more.
At noon, he had indeed ordered Yu Qing to come to his manor to deliver some things, but he hadn’t ordered Yu Qing to deliver food to Xiao Ji. He didn’t know what kind of nonsense courtesy Yu Qing was blindly paying.
Unable to make heads or tails of it, he simply said to the other servants, “Tell the kitchen to serve the dishes later.”
With that, he stepped out of the flower hall and strode toward the Lake Heart Pavilion.
Winter days were short; it was only just past You hour (5-7 PM), yet the sky had already darkened.
Ever since reconciling with Xiang Yinnian, Xiao Ji knew that opportunities to do as he pleased at night were few. Taking advantage of being in the right this time, he confidently slept in the Lake Heart Pavilion for the entire afternoon.
Hearing footsteps approaching from far to near, he yawned with a hint of drowsiness but didn’t open his eyes.
Xiang Yinnian lifted the gauze curtain and saw Xiao Ji recklessly lying there barefoot without even wearing a padded jacket. His anger shot up:
“Loving the cold isn’t done this way! Are you practicing some unholy martial art, freezing yourself to improve your internal power?”
Xiao Ji ignored him, lying there as if half-dead.
Xiang Yinnian bustled about, picking up the fox-fur cloak from the ground to cover Xiao Ji, touching Xiao Ji’s forehead and side of the neck to ensure he wasn’t feverish, and finally sitting at Xiao Ji’s feet. He scooped up those two ice-cold feet and tucked them into his own embrace:
“What’s wrong now? Face longer than a donkey’s.”
Xiao Ji kicked against his warm abdominal muscles and sighed:
“I said early on, if I came to the Northern Border only to suffer daily torment from the Wangye’s concubines, I would be better off dead.”
Xiang Yinnian rubbed his cold calves:
“What kind of hysteria is this? Where would I get concubines?”
Xiao Ji let out a cold laugh:
“No little concubines, but plenty of vice generals.”
Hearing this, Xiang Yinnian finally realized that Yu Qing hadn’t come to deliver food to Xiao Ji today. He stopped the movement of his hands:
“She gave you grief?”
Xiao Ji glanced at Xiang Yinnian. “Not really. She just feels I harbor evil intentions and am plotting against you and the Northern Border, so she came to give me a warning or two.”
Yu Qing wasn’t such an overstepping person in the past. Xiang Yinnian took a moment to react before understanding the meaning behind Xiao Ji’s words:
“Damn it, I said she looked preoccupied these days. Turns out she wasn’t holding in a good fart and started managing Ben Wang’s family affairs!”
Xiao Ji didn’t cry or fuss, and even spoke up for Yu Qing.
“Wangye, what are you saying? General Yu’s loyalty is evident in this act. At most, it’s just a piece of infatuation for the Wangye.”
Loyalty being evident, Xiang Yinnian could understand.
But a piece of infatuation, Xiang Yinnian couldn’t comprehend.
He felt that the concept of Yu Qing being interested in him was the same as Lin Heng being interested in him—both were unbearable.
Xiang Yinnian refused to accept it:
“Don’t eat this kind of unfounded flying vinegar. A person like Yu Qing—when we fight, she can go three-seven with Huzi. Three punches from Yu Qing, and it’s Huzi’s funeral (the seventh day after death). Aside from fighting side by side, Ben Wang and she are eight poles away from any romantic affairs. Be good, don’t think nonsense.”
Xiao Ji nodded. “Understood. You don’t trust me.”
Xiang Yinnian didn’t know how to coax people and was momentarily stumped. Right now, Xiao Ji was obviously jealous. After thinking it over, he made a new decision:
“Starting tomorrow, you will follow me into the drill grounds and the military camp. I want to see who dares to provoke you under my nose.”
Xiao Ji raised an eyebrow. “That is inappropriate. I am a member of the Royal Family.”
Xiang Yinnian waved his hand. “Nothing inappropriate about it. The people of the Northern Border are trustworthy. Your martial arts need not be hidden; just hold back a little and keep it as a killing move.”
“If you are willing, those disappointing soldiers of mine might need to pass through your hands for a bit of discipline.”
“You trust me that much?” Xiao Ji looked at him. “Aren’t you afraid I’ll kick you when you’re down and burn the bridge after crossing?”
Xiang Yinnian met his gaze:
“Xiao Ji, I trust you without reservation now. If one day you betray me, I will drag you down to hell with me.”
Xiao Ji chuckled low, sitting up to kiss him:
“It’s a promise.”
