Chapter 95: That Uncle Is Dead
Xie Miaohan picked up the wallet and opened it to check if the money was still inside.
He saw a photo, and his brow furrowed slightly.
“Xie Miaohan.” Gu Huaiye’s tone held a hint of anger. “Why do you have a knife?”
Xie Miaohan was startled; he hadn’t realized Gu Huaiye had caught up.
He looked up, met Gu Huaiye’s gaze, and quickly hid the knife behind his back.
“Do you think I can’t see it just because you hide it?”
Xie Miaohan was still being stubborn. “Brother, you saw wrong.”
Gu Huaiye laughed out of sheer anger and strode toward him.
Before he even raised his hand, Xie Miaohan suddenly covered his head, assuming a defensive posture.
The expression on Gu Huaiye’s face froze. After a moment, he sighed with a mix of heartache and helplessness.
You can’t fake that kind of subconscious reaction.
He must have been beaten often in the past, so it made sense that he would carry a knife for self-defense.
“Don’t be afraid, I won’t hit you.” Gu Huaiye’s voice softened. “Tell me, where did you get the knife?”
Xie Miaohan lowered his arms and stared at Gu Huaiye uneasily.
“I brought it from Uncle’s house.”
“So you’ve been hiding it in your schoolbag the whole time?”
Xie Miaohan nodded. A moment later, seemingly realizing something, he explained anxiously, “I didn’t bring it to use against Brother. I was afraid someone would hurt me.”
“Yeah, I know.” Gu Huaiye held out his hand. “Give me the knife. You’re so young; it’s dangerous to carry it around.”
Xie Miaohan hesitated, but eventually chose to hand over the knife.
Once Gu Huaiye had it, he turned and threw it into a trash can.
He came back to Xie Miaohan, squatted down, and looked at him seriously. “This is District A. It’s second only to District B in safety and prosperity. You are very safe here; you don’t need to carry a knife.”
“But… there was a thief just now.”
Gu Huaiye: “……”
He coughed awkwardly and replied with a straight face, “That situation is rare. He came from a poor place like us and didn’t know the rules here. Once we leave the train station, there are police patrolling everywhere. He wouldn’t dare steal anything.”
Xie Miaohan nodded, seeming to understand but not fully.
“Brother, are you still angry with Miaomiao?” Xie Miaohan handed the wallet to Gu Huaiye. “Miaomiao won’t carry a knife anymore.”
Since Gu Huaiye frequently called him “Miaomiao,” Xie Miaohan had gotten used to hearing it and now often referred to himself as “Miaomiao” as well.
Especially since he noticed that whenever he said “Miaomiao,” Gu Huaiye would become very gentle and even reward him with snacks. Now that Brother was angry, mentioning “Miaomiao” might earn his forgiveness.
Gu Huaiye took the wallet and put it in his pocket.
“I’m not angry. I was just worried about your safety. Next time something like this happens, let me handle it. Money isn’t more important than your life, understand?”
Gu Huaiye had been scared to death.
The thief looked thirteen or fourteen, much taller than Xie Miaohan. If he had snatched the knife and hurt Xie Miaohan, the consequences would have been unthinkable.
Gu Huaiye felt a lingering fear just thinking about it.
Xie Miaohan stared blankly at Gu Huaiye.
In his understanding, money was extremely important.
Every time his uncle beat him, he complained about how much money it cost to raise him.
With money, you could eat your fill; with money, you could buy clothes.
The reason he retrieved the wallet was because he feared that if Gu Huaiye lost his money, he would despise him for being useless—just like his uncle did—and drive him away.
How could he be more important than money?
He was probably just saying that to comfort him.
“Let’s go.” Gu Huaiye took Xie Miaohan’s small hand and curled his lips into a smile. “Hungry, right? Let’s go eat something.”
“Okay.”
As the two walked out of the train station, Xie Miaohan couldn’t help but voice the question in his heart.
“Brother, who is that in the photo in your wallet? That uncle is so good-looking.”
Gu Huaiye paused, then smiled. “He’s not that old. He’s not an uncle.”
“Is he Brother’s relative?”
Gu Huaiye fell silent for a moment before whispering, “He’s my wife.”
The smile on Xie Miaohan’s face vanished, and he instinctively tightened his grip on Gu Huaiye’s hand.
“Did Brother come here specifically to find him?” Xie Miaohan’s voice was a bit downcast. “Will he dislike Miaomiao?”
Gu Huaiye looked down at Xie Miaohan.
You are the same person. How could he dislike you?
Seeing Gu Huaiye’s silence, Xie Miaohan became even more uneasy.
“Brother…”
Gu Huaiye snapped out of his thoughts and rubbed the boy’s head with his other hand.
“He’s already gone.”
Xie Miaohan put on a sad expression, then stopped walking, turned, and hugged Gu Huaiye.
“Brother, don’t be sad. Miaomiao will stay with you from now on.”
Great. That uncle is dead.
He didn’t have to worry about anyone driving him away.
Brother would be with him forever.
hidden from Gu Huaiye’s view, Xie Miaohan smiled.
Gu Huaiye planned to settle down in District A; the education and medical facilities here were excellent.
Xie Miaohan’s childhood should be spent here. With his intervention, perhaps he could guide Xie Miaohan onto the right path so he wouldn’t be so extreme in the future.
Gu Huaiye walked around with Xie Miaohan all afternoon and finally rented an apartment that was satisfactory in both price and environment.
Two bedrooms and a living room—enough for them. Once they had money, they could move to a bigger place and give Xie Miaohan a proper study.
Moving into the new home, Gu Huaiye bent over to clean. Xie Miaohan wasn’t idle either; he took a rag and helped wipe the cabinets.
It was Gu Huaiye’s first time doing deep cleaning himself. Mopping left water stains everywhere, and he wasn’t sure if it was actually clean.
He figured they could make do for now. Practice makes perfect; one day it would be clean.
Gu Huaiye looked at Xie Miaohan. “Alright, you don’t need to be so…”
He paused, staring in surprise at the cabinet that had been wiped until it shone. He reached out a finger and swiped it across the surface.
My god, not a speck of dust.
Was he really this good?
Xie Miaohan had finished wiping. He washed the rag clean and hung it by the window to dry.
He took the mop from Gu Huaiye’s hand, went into the bathroom, and wrung it out in the bucket.
Then he walked back to the living room and efficiently wiped away the water stains on the floor.
Gu Huaiye snapped out of his shock and quickly grabbed the mop handle.
“I’ll do it. You don’t need to do so much housework. Go take a shower. Go to sleep early tonight; I’ll take you to find a school tomorrow morning.”
“Brother, I can…”
Gu Huaiye interrupted him, pushing him toward the bathroom.
“Go shower quickly. I need to shower later too, so don’t fight me for the bathroom.”
Xie Miaohan had to let go of the mop. He took his pajamas out of his schoolbag and turned to walk into the bathroom.
“Hey, you didn’t take your schoolbag in?”
Xie Miaohan opened the bathroom door, poked his head out, and smiled at Gu Huaiye.
“Brother, I’ll leave the bracelet with you for safekeeping.”
After saying that, appearing a bit shy, he quickly closed the door.
Gu Huaiye was stunned, then laughed helplessly.
Why did it feel a bit like playing a video game level?
The little guy finally trusted him.
