Chapter 36: I, Pei Zhouye, Do Not Play the Role of the Other Man
It took a moment for a reply to come through.
[Drop him off wherever he wants to go.]
[Send me the address.]
The tone was unmistakably Pei Zhouye’s.
Unable to gauge Pei Zhouye’s thoughts, the manager obediently sent the address Wen Yan had given him.
It was the back gate of A University.
He didn’t know what Wen Yan was going to do there; surely he couldn’t still be a student.
If he was a student, how could he have come into contact with Pei Zhouye, who had just returned to the country?
Cheng Shangshi stared at Wen Yan’s side profile for a long time before suddenly speaking.
“Leave a number. I’ll send a request; just accept it a bit later,” he said calmly, his tone devoid of emotion, simply wanting a contact method.
Wen Yan glanced at the manager in the passenger seat.
He had just rejected Cheng Shangshi’s manager earlier because he didn’t have his phone to scan a code.
Naturally, the manager saw Wen Yan’s glance through the rearview mirror. He waved his hand dismissal. “It’s fine.”
If he couldn’t add him, it was fine if Cheng Shangshi did. As long as one of them had Wen Yan’s contact information, it could be considered an indirect route to their goal.
Hearing this, Wen Yan took Cheng Shangshi’s phone and entered his number.
Right in front of him, Cheng Shangshi copied the number and searched for Wen Yan’s WeChat.
“Is this it?”
The phone screen hovered in front of Wen Yan’s eyes, displaying his personal homepage. It featured a quirky, cute sticker pack, which contrasted sharply with Wen Yan’s entire demeanor.
Wen Yan’s ears turned red as he answered simply, “Yes.”
“I’ve sent the request.” Cheng Shangshi lowered his head to fiddle with his phone, showing Wen Yan his own homepage. “This is me.”
“Okay,” Wen Yan acknowledged.
Neither of them was the type to initiate conversation, so the car fell silent again.
The manager scratched his hair irritably. “Do you know what the consequences of your attitude today will be?”
“I won’t be able to act anymore,” Cheng Shangshi said flatly.
The manager got angry immediately. “Who said that? Aren’t I trying to figure out a solution? Can’t you think of something too? If you want to quit the industry, don’t drag me down with you; I still have a family to feed!”
The dynamic between the two was somewhat comical. Cheng Shangshi seemed calm no matter what, while the manager would only get more furious at this attitude.
Wen Yan lowered his head, the gloom and stagnation in his heart dissipating just a tiny bit.
“Are you a student at A University?” Cheng Shangshi asked.
Wen Yan was stunned for a moment. “Yes.”
He now had a strange fear of strangers. Cheng Shangshi’s sudden attempt to strike up a conversation reminded him of Pei Zhouye.
The sensation of being forcibly kissed came rushing back. Wen Yan trembled slightly, thinking of the person who appeared in his dreams.
In an instant, his back felt as if it were encased in cold air.
Cheng Shangshi spoke slowly, “You don’t have a phone on you. After we get out, I’ll go with you to exchange some cash, then you can go find your classmates for help.”
“What are you going to do? Why are you getting out?” The manager in the front seat exploded directly.
Wen Yan was Pei Zhouye’s person. He had just sent a message, and Pei Zhouye had replied personally asking for the address. With this level of importance attached—the incident in the dressing room before could be overlooked, but if Pei Zhouye saw Cheng Shangshi with Wen Yan again later, neither of them would be able to survive in the entertainment industry.
“I can’t show my face. Then I’ll have to trouble Brother Wang to help him,” Cheng Shangshi answered frankly, seemingly having predicted that the manager wouldn’t let him get out.
Wen Yan realized with a start that Cheng Shangshi was reminding the manager to help him. He felt a bit regretful for lumping Cheng Shangshi together with that bastard Pei Zhouye in his mind.
There weren’t that many bad people in the world.
Manager Wang felt a wave of guilt, but still agreed readily, “Fine.”
He looked at Wen Yan in the rearview mirror.
Wen Yan didn’t know yet that his itinerary had already been exposed to Pei Zhouye. Most likely, the moment he got out of the car, Wen Yan would be snatched back.
The car arrived at the back gate of A University first.
Wen Yan got out and waved goodbye to Cheng Shangshi inside the car.
Manager Wang got out as well.
The two walked a few steps together before Wen Yan stopped in his tracks.
Under a tree, Pei Zhouye stood quietly in the shade. The interplay of light and shadow shrouded his tall figure, making his gloomy, cold aura even heavier.
Run!
Before his body could react, Wen Yan stiffly took a few steps back, only for his arm to be grabbed by a hand.
He turned his head in disbelief, looking at Manager Wang.
Manager Wang avoided his gaze, his Adam’s apple rolling a few times, and began to smile obsequiously at Pei Zhouye.
“Young Master Pei, sorry to keep you waiting.”
The man walked over with composure, glancing at Manager Wang’s hand.
Manager Wang subconsciously retracted his hand. “Apologies.”
Wen Yan seized the opportunity to turn and run, but his waist was caught by a powerful arm.
“I’ve locked Gu Yulan up.”
The posture was too intimate; Wen Yan could feel the vibration of Pei Zhouye’s chest when he spoke.
His tone was casual and natural. “Be obedient.”
Manager Wang pretended not to hear anything and nodded. “Young Master Pei, I’ll be going first. Shangshi and I caused offense today; please don’t hold it against us.”
Pei Zhouye gave a casual “En,” and Manager Wang left hurriedly.
It was almost evening.
The sunset was dipping low, and vendors were pushing carts to sell snacks by the roadside.
The two stood in a stalemate.
Wen Yan remained silent for a long time. He didn’t know how to face the betrayal that came one after another.
Besides the driver, there had only been the three of them in the car. Manager Wang clearly knew Pei Zhouye was here.
“What do you want me to do?” Wen Yan lowered his eyes and asked coldly.
Pei Zhouye was satisfied with Wen Yan’s compliance. “Come with me to see him. Tell him to break up face-to-face.”
“I, Pei Zhouye, do not play the role of the other man.”
He had evidently completely forgotten his previous remark to Wen Yan about “you can have two boyfriends.”
“Hah.”
Pei Zhouye looked toward the source of the sound.
Wen Yan’s expression was indifferent, a self-mocking sneer at the corner of his mouth. “Let’s go.”
Leaving aside the fact that he could never like Pei Zhouye or be with him in this lifetime, Pei Zhouye himself was a fickle man. He had Lin Seran in the open, yet came to harass him tirelessly.
He had double standards for himself and others, never caring about others’ wishes, acting as he pleased, and taking pleasure in trampling others’ dignity underfoot.
didn’t Pei Zhouye want to laugh when he said those words?
They returned to that manor again.
Wen Yan watched the changing scenery outside, detesting a road more than anything else for the first time in his life.
He had traveled it three times. Once to see Gu Yulan’s false mask, once betrayed by a fellow traveler, and this time coerced by Pei Zhouye.
Pei Zhouye’s car drove directly into the manor and continued for a while before stopping.
Pei Zhouye wanted to help Wen Yan out of the car but was shaken off.
In front of them was the door to a small building. Bodyguards dressed in all black stood guard at the entrance. Seeing Pei Zhouye, they bowed their heads and opened the door.
Before entering, Pei Zhouye suddenly stopped, his voice cold and threatening.
“Wen Yan, don’t lie to me.”
Wen Yan ignored him and walked straight in.
The door behind him slammed shut with a bang.
Wen Yan was frozen in place by the scene before him.
Gu Yulan had injuries on his face. A bodyguard stood on each side of him, firmly holding his shoulders down.
