Chapter 101: He Didn’t Want to Live Anymore
Gu Huaiye didn’t notice the gold chain around his wrist when he woke up; he only discovered it when he started making breakfast for Xie Miaohan.
He paused, a look of surprise surfacing in his eyes.
Did Xie Miaohan secretly put this on him?
When did he do it? How had he not noticed at all?
Gu Huaiye carried the fried eggs out of the kitchen. After more than a month of practice, he could finally fry a beautiful sunny-side-up egg, rather than a scorched yellow blob.
He placed the plate in front of Xie Miaohan and asked, “When did you put this bracelet on me?”
Xie Miaohan’s cheeks flushed slightly, and he looked away, too shy to meet Gu Huaiye’s gaze.
“I put it on secretly last night after Brother fell asleep.”
Gu Huaiye didn’t scold Xie Miaohan for staying up late again. Instead, he lifted his arm and lowered his head, studying the bracelet for a long time.
This bracelet was a memento of Xie Miaohan’s mother.
It held significant meaning and belonged with someone far more important.
For instance, Xie Miaohan’s future Omega.
He wasn’t sure how long he could stay here. Maybe he would leave in the next second, or perhaps he would be lucky enough to stay until Xie Miaohan graduated from university.
Maybe even until Xie Miaohan got married…
Gu Huaiye hesitated, then took the bracelet off and placed it on the dining table.
“This bracelet is very important to you, isn’t it? If it’s something important, don’t just give it away to people casually.”
Xie Miaohan shook his head frantically. “Brother isn’t just ‘people casually’.”
Gu Huaiye knew the boy had misunderstood his meaning but didn’t correct him. He smiled. “I know. Hurry up and eat breakfast; I have to take you to school soon. If we’re late again, the school is going to blacklist us.”
But Xie Miaohan was sulking. He turned his back to Gu Huaiye and refused to eat.
Gu Huaiye’s smile faded, and he adopted a stern expression. “Miaomiao, we’re really going to be late. Eat.”
Xie Miaohan remained motionless. After a long while, his voice came out choked with tears.
“Brother really doesn’t like Miaomiao. You won’t even accept my gift.”
Gu Huaiye sighed helplessly. “I’ll accept it. I’ll keep it safe for you for now.”
At worst, when Xie Miaohan got married, he would take the bracelet out and give it to the person who would truly treat Xie Miaohan well.
Xie Miaohan quietly turned his head, watching out of the corner of his eye as Gu Huaiye put the bracelet back on.
“Is this okay?” Gu Huaiye raised his hand and waved it in front of Xie Miaohan. “Not angry anymore?”
Xie Miaohan grinned happily and nodded vigorously.
“Brother is the best.”
Gu Huaiye patted his head. “Eat your breakfast.”
“Okay.”
Life returned to a warm, quiet calm.
Gu Huaiye settled into a routine between home and work. By day, he worked diligently. If he got off work on time in the evening, he would go pick up Xie Miaohan.
If he was running late, he would go straight to the market to buy groceries, then rush back to cook for Xie Miaohan.
It was exhausting, but it allowed him to temporarily forget the events of his previous two lives.
Whenever he had a moment of idleness, he would think of his father, Chen Zirui, and the Xie Miaohan who had fallen from the building with him.
There was a Xie Miaohan here, too.
But he was too young and lacked the memories of the previous lives, so it was hard for Gu Huaiye to connect the two.
Sometimes, he pondered the meaning of his transmigration here.
Was there something specific he needed to do?
Or perhaps, because he owed Xie Miaohan too much, he needed to come to Xie Miaohan’s childhood to atone for his sins?
Once the atonement was complete—when Xie Miaohan became the SSS-level Alpha everyone respected and admired, free from the shadows of the past and possessing a positive, upward-looking character—Gu Huaiye would likely cease to exist.
Actually, that would be for the best. The Gu Huaiye of this world had no memories either. If their lives didn’t entangle, the tragedies of the past two lives wouldn’t repeat.
Xie Miaohan finished his homework and came to find Gu Huaiye to check it.
Gu Huaiye’s door was open. Xie Miaohan stood at the doorway, about to speak, when he noticed Gu Huaiye staring blankly at a photo in his wallet again.
“Brother,” Xie Miaohan called out softly.
Gu Huaiye seemed to wake with a start. He quickly turned his back to Xie Miaohan and wiped the corners of his eyes.
By the time he looked back at Xie Miaohan, a gentle smile was already plastered on his face.
“What is it?”
Xie Miaohan stared at Gu Huaiye’s reddened eyes before saying, “There’s a problem I don’t know how to solve.”
“Which one?” Gu Huaiye beckoned to him. “Bring it here, let Brother take a look.”
Xie Miaohan agreed, walked over, spread out his homework, and pointed to a blank space.
“This one.”
Gu Huaiye glanced down, smiled, and patiently taught him how to solve it.
“Do you understand now?”
Xie Miaohan shook his head.
Gu Huaiye taught him again, but Xie Miaohan shook his head once more.
Gu Huaiye gave a bitter smile, thinking it was a good thing he never aspired to be a teacher; he would probably lead students astray.
“Forget it, I’ll just guide you through writing it out.”
He lifted Xie Miaohan onto his lap, held the boy’s hand, and patiently explained while guiding Xie Miaohan to write the answer.
Once the problem was solved, Gu Huaiye prepared to lift Xie Miaohan down, but Xie Miaohan suddenly reached for the wallet on the table.
He opened the wallet and pointed to the photo inside.
“Brother, are you missing this person again?”
Gu Huaiye pinched his cheek, sighing helplessly. “So young, yet such a gossip.”
Xie Miaohan was unconvinced. “I’m not small. I’m almost eight.”
“Still a little brat.” Gu Huaiye took the wallet back from his hands and snapped it shut. “Time to wash up and go to sleep.”
“Brother, how did this uncle die?” Xie Miaohan ignored him and continued to press. “Is he like my mom and dad, buried under the mountain?”
Xie Miaohan’s parents had died in a landslide, and their bodies had never been recovered.
“No.” Gu Huaiye shook his head. “He died by suicide.”
“What is suicide?”
Gu Huaiye thought for a moment and explained in simple terms, “He didn’t want to live anymore.”
Xie Miaohan could barely suppress the corners of his mouth. “Did he not want Brother anymore? Then he’s a bad guy for leaving Brother all alone and making Brother sad every day.”
Hearing this, Gu Huaiye fell silent.
Actually, he was the one who didn’t want Xie Miaohan. He had clamored to go back to District A to get married and have children.
That was what drove the Xie Miaohan of the previous life to extremes.
Gu Huaiye lowered his head, staring at the familiar brows and eyes.
However, the Xie Miaohan of this life should be able to find happiness.
Under his companionship, lacking neither food nor clothes, he would grow up happy and joyful.
Then, he would successfully differentiate into an SSS-level Alpha, meet a matching Omega, and marry. He wouldn’t have to suffer the torture of rut periods and would live a peaceful, happy life.
“Miaomiao,” Gu Huaiye said softly to Xie Miaohan, “You will be happy this time. I promise you.”
Xie Miaohan hugged Gu Huaiye. “Then Brother has to be happy too.”
Stop thinking about that bad uncle.
He didn’t like Gu Huaiye always crying over that dead, bad uncle.
Xie Miaohan let go of Gu Huaiye and looked up at him.
“Brother, the school is having a field trip next month. Can Brother come with me?”
“Sure,” Gu Huaiye said with a smile. “Brother will go with you.”
