Enemies on a Narrow Road [Esports] Chapter 2

Chapter 2 ◎ He’s Older Than Me (Revised) ◎

In the dormitory, Lin Sumo lay on his bed holding his phone.

He was messaging Pei Yun’s mother, Auntie Zhou.

[Lin Sumo]: [Auntie Zhou, is Pei Yun in Luowen right now?]

[Auntie Zhou]: [Yes, he is.]

[Auntie Zhou]: [I’m surprised Xiao Mo is concerned about our Ah Yun.]

Lin Sumo fell silent for a moment, ultimately choosing to ignore the teasing remark. He asked directly: [Auntie Zhou, did Pei Yun tell you he was going to play video games?]

After a while, a long voice message came through.

Lin Sumo turned down the volume and played the message. Auntie Zhou’s voice drifted out.

“Xiao Mo, I heard from your mom that you went to Luowen too. Did you run into Ah Yun there? He told me he was going there to play some game. Originally, with the entrance exams coming up, I didn’t really agree. But later, seeing how much he liked it, I just let him be. If you meet Ah Yun, please help each other out. It’s always better to have someone to rely on.”

Lin Sumo rubbed his forehead, pressed the record button, and spoke into the phone. “Auntie Zhou, Pei Yun and I are in the same club right now… we’ll probably be staying together for a long time.”

Lin Sumo released his finger, and the voice message sent automatically. He thought for a moment, then spoke into the phone again.

“As for helping out… we’ll try our best…”

Although Auntie Zhou knew he and Pei Yun didn’t get along, Lin Sumo’s words were still an understatement.

Forget about helping; it was already a miracle if they didn’t trip each other up.

They were like two burning fireballs—touching would cause an explosion. They constantly tried to stay away from each other, yet were drawn together by an irresistible force, crashing violently.

Resulting in mutual destruction.

After chatting a few more sentences with Auntie Zhou, Song Hong sent over the Trust Club’s daily schedule.

Lin Sumo opened the file and immediately gasped.

No training in the morning. Lunch from 1:30 to 1:50 PM. Collective training started promptly at 2:00 PM and lasted until 7:00 PM. Dinner was from 7:00 to 7:30 PM, followed by a half-hour break. After 8:00 PM was solo training, which lasted until 2:00 AM. During training, barring special circumstances, players could not leave the training room for more than half an hour, or their wages would be docked.

Lin Sumo calculated it—they had to train for 12 hours a day.

Just then, Song Hong sent another message.

Manager Song Hong: [This is just the normal schedule. During tournaments, training time increases to 14 hours, sometimes up to 16 hours.]

Lin Sumo was nearly scared to death by this arrangement.

Even though he knew before coming that esports players worked hard, this was…

But then Lin Sumo had another thought—

…Cramming for the college entrance exam seems even more exhausting than this, Lin Sumo muttered inwardly.

However, two seconds later, he overturned his own conclusion. “But I have to maintain this schedule for my entire career! How does that compare?!”

Since he couldn’t resist, he’d just have to comply. Lin Sumo thought with resignation.

Luowen was much hotter than his hometown of Qingyang. The whole world was roasted into a blur by the sunlight. The sun ruthlessly hijacked his good mood, taking it to a strange space that didn’t belong to him.

He checked the time; it was ten past twelve.

Lin Sumo sighed, picked up the team uniform he had just received from Yu Pei, and headed to the en-suite bathroom, planning to shower before going downstairs.

At 1:35 PM, Lin Sumo slowly walked downstairs to eat.

It would have been fine if he hadn’t come down, but as soon as he did, he encountered Pei Yun eating at the table.

“……” Lin Sumo chose the ‘out of sight, out of mind’ approach and picked the seat furthest away from him.

Before long, the other team members came down one after another.

Five people sat together. Aside from Pei Yun and Yu Pei, the other two members who hadn’t met Lin Sumo were curious about him.

“Yu Pei, is this the amazing rookie Solve that you and Song Hong talked about?” A member with dyed pink hair asked curiously.

“Yes, his name is Lin Sumo,” Yu Pei said, then looked at Lin Sumo. “This is Drift, Jiang He.”

“Hello.” Lin Sumo politely greeted Jiang He.

“Hey, hey, hello,” Jiang He laughed. “Solve, how old are you this year?”

“17.” Lin Sumo answered.

Jiang He’s eyes lit up. “I knew you looked young!”

Yu Pei slapped his arm. “Don’t make a fuss!”

Lin Sumo was a bit confused watching their somewhat rough interaction.

Were all the people in this team… like this?

Yu Pei pointed to another man nearby who hadn’t spoken. “Him, Xiao Lanyu. ID is Choice. This guy is a mute bottle; he’s okay once you know him, but he really doesn’t talk if you don’t.”

Xiao Lanyu didn’t refute the teasing, merely letting out a cold snort at Yu Pei.

Lin Sumo: “……Hello.”

“Pei Yun!” Yu Pei shouted at Pei Yun. “Your turn.”

Pei Yun looked baffled. “What about me?”

As if this whole segment naturally had nothing to do with him.

Yu Pei clicked his tongue. “Introduce yourself to our new teammate.”

Lin Sumo: “……” That’s really… not necessary…

Pei Yun glanced at him. “You introduced everyone else, why make me do it myself when it gets to me?”

“Captain,” Lin Sumo couldn’t help but speak up. “I’ve met him. Manager Song and I saw him when we came upstairs today.”

Yu Pei: “Eh? Then you should know you two are the same age. Going by months, who’s older?”

Lin Sumo: “He’s older than me.”

“How do you know?” Yu Pei’s gaze darted between the two people sitting unusually far apart. “You guys discussed that back then?”

Lin Sumo: “……” Crap, spoke too fast.

Having just arrived at the club, he didn’t really want the others to know about his relationship with Pei Yun. Especially since they didn’t get along; it felt weird.

Just as Lin Sumo was thinking about how to explain, Pei Yun spoke faintly, “We did discuss it.”

Lin Sumo looked at Pei Yun in surprise, but the latter continued eating after speaking, not looking at him at all.

Yu Pei came to a sudden realization. “Oh, so that’s how it is.”

After a while, Song Hong walked over and clapped his hands twice. “Time’s almost up. Hurry up and finish eating, then go train.”

Lin Sumo finished his last mouthful of rice and walked toward the kitchen with his bowl.

“Eh?” Yu Pei called out. “Mo-mo, what are you doing?”

Lin Sumo turned around, looking at him with confusion. “Washing the bowl.”

“Pfft,” Jiang He couldn’t hold back a laugh. “Mo-mo, you don’t need to wash it yourself. The base hires an auntie. If you wash the bowl, won’t the auntie lose her job?”

Lin Sumo: “Then I…?”

Lin Sumo was truly confused now. He was used to being oppressed with chores at home, so he felt very uncomfortable here.

Jiang He patted his shoulder. “Just leave it on the table.”

Lin Sumo: “……Oh.”
