Chapter 8 ◎ Are You Kidding Me? ◎
One morning, more than half a month after leaving home, Lin Sumo was slightly surprised to receive a call from his mother.
Mother Lin exchanged pleasantries with her son for a while, asking if he was used to the food, if he was tired, how he was getting along with others, and so on. Lin Sumo answered everything one by one. After chatting for a long time, Mother Lin asked, “I heard from your Auntie Zhou that you and Pei Yun are together, right?”
Lin Sumo answered obediently, “Yes.”
“He’s there right now, isn’t he?” Mother Lin said. “Put him on the phone for a second.”
Lin Sumo was stunned. “Mom, I’m in my dorm right now. He’s not in the same room as me.”
Mother Lin made a noise of impatience. “Go find him then. He should be up by now.”
Lin Sumo sighed and could only take his phone, open the door, and walk out.
He still maintained his biological clock from the past few years. Although he usually slept late, he only woke up a few hours later than the average high school student. In contrast, apart from himself and Pei Yun, the other internet-addicted teenagers in the base woke up later and later. So, the base was quiet right now. To avoid waking the others, Lin Sumo could only tip-toe toward Pei Yun’s dorm.
Arriving at Pei Yun’s door, Lin Sumo raised his hand and knocked. He waited for a long time, but there was no sound from inside.
Lin Sumo clicked his tongue.
In the past, when he went to find Pei Yun at his house, Lin Sumo would just walk in without knocking.
Once, when Pei Yun was sick with a fever and took time off, which happened to be a weekend, Lin Sumo went to his house to drop off homework.
Auntie Zhou told Lin Sumo that Pei Yun was in his room, so he opened Pei Yun’s door directly. As soon as he opened it, he ran right into Pei Yun, who was about to go out.
Perhaps due to the fever, Pei Yun’s usually cold, pale skin was unnaturally flushed, and even the tip of his nose was red. He might have just gotten out of bed; the top three buttons of his shirt were undone, revealing a captivating collarbone.
Pei Yun frowned and spoke, his voice raspy, “What are you doing here?”
Lin Sumo received a strong visual and auditory shock. He dropped the homework and ran away immediately.
Pulling his thoughts back, the door in front of Lin Sumo remained silent. Just as he was preparing to barge in like before, the door suddenly opened.
Pei Yun, wearing the team uniform t-shirt, looked at Lin Sumo calmly. “Early in the morning… are you sick?”
Lin Sumo sneered and shoved the phone in his face. “My mom wants to talk to you.”
On the phone screen, the contact name “Mom” and the active call interface were clearly displayed.
Pei Yun: “……”
Pei Yun took Lin Sumo’s phone directly, turned, and went back into his dorm. The next second, he closed the door again.
Lin Sumo: “……”
His face went black immediately. “Pei Yun, screw you! That’s my fucking phone!”
The base’s soundproofing was quite good. Not knowing if the guy couldn’t hear him or heard him and didn’t want to respond, nearly ten minutes passed before Pei Yun came out with Lin Sumo’s phone.
Lin Sumo asked him grumpily, “What did my mom say?”
Pei Yun tossed the phone back to him. “None of your business.”
“No, what the fuck do you mean?!” Lin Sumo bristled again, but remembering that others were resting, he was forced to lower his voice. “I advise you to talk quickly, or I’ll kill you.”
Pei Yun sneered. “I’m afraid of you killing me? It’s more likely you’ll get lost.”
Lin Sumo was choked with anger. Crucially, he couldn’t win the argument, so he threw out a “Too lazy to waste time talking nonsense with you” and left.
Back in his own dorm, Lin Sumo opened WeChat to message his mother.
Solve: [Mom, what did you say to Pei Yun?]
Mom: [Weren’t you right next to him just now? You didn’t hear?]
Through the screen, Lin Sumo could already feel his mother’s helplessness.
Mom: [I just said that you’re usually willful, so I asked him to help you out more while you’re away from home.]
Mom: [I also said that since you’re not at home, don’t argue every day. You’re both so big now, stop acting like children.]
Several large blocks of text came from the other side. Seeing that Mother Lin was about to nag more, Lin Sumo hurriedly stopped her: [Okay, okay, enough Mom, I get it!]
Mom: [Complaining that I talk too much again?]
Lin Sumo: “……” If I said yes, wouldn’t you slaughter me?
Lin Sumo simply muted his phone, threw it aside, and lay flat on the bed.
Two hours later, having inexplicably fallen asleep, Lin Sumo slowly woke up.
Checking the time, he slowly went downstairs, opening his phone to flip to Mother Lin’s chat window.
Unsurprisingly, Mother Lin had left a pile of instructions about this and that. Lin Sumo intended to let it go in one ear and out the other, until he saw the last message in the chat box.
Mom: [Don’t just read it and forget it. I asked Pei Yun to supervise you. If you don’t listen to me, I’ll have him come to me and report on you, hah.]
Lin Sumo’s footsteps on the stairs suddenly halted.
Holy crap!
Are! You! Kidding! Me!!!
