Chapter 32
After leaving the hotel, He Yuan didn’t return to the base immediately.
He wandered aimlessly down the street, watching the pedestrians and vehicles pass by without focus, staring up at the star trails shimmering in the high altitude.
Stumbling upon a park, he turned inside and sat on the steps by a flowerbed, hugging his knees.
Being liked by General Wen Su should be something incredibly lucky and blissful, right?
Even Young Master Chu, the son of the Star Source Allianceās Chief Executive, couldn’t get what he wanted. So, was he, a nobody, really going to reject it?
It seemed ungrateful.
But deception was even worse!
He couldn’t lie to General Wen Su, and he couldn’t lie to himself, even if he didn’t know what the future held.
He Yuan clenched his fists.
He stood up, the light returning to his previously unfocused, large eyes.
He took out his phone and sent a message to Wen Su.
[General Sir, I am coming back now. I should be there in about three hours.]
He had to follow through on what he promised.
He finally understood that the reason General Wen Su didn’t want him to use the title “General Sir” or act as a life assistant anymore wasn’t out of a desire for control. It was because the General thought he wasn’t a life assistant to begin with.
He thought their feelings were mutual.
He had misunderstood him. He needed to apologize properly, and then… explain everything clearly.
He took the public sky-rail to the station nearest the base, then walked to the perimeter. He contacted the robot butler to open access permissionsāface scan, iris scanāentered the base, and headed deeper toward the villa in the generals’ living quarters.
His path was unobstructed, and General Wen Su watched every step of it.
Standing in front of the large screen in the study, utilizing the surveillance system with the highest clearance, Wen Su could precisely observe everything happening within the base.
But at this moment, he harbored a humble hopeāa hope that he knew nothing.
…That he didn’t have to know anything.
Entering the living room, a familiar sense of tranquility washed over him. He Yuan smiled and greeted the robot butler, then went up to the third floor to put away his backpack and change clothes in his own bedroomā
Not long ago, he had moved into Wen Su’s bedroom on the General’s orders. But since Wen Su had been away these past few days, he felt it wasn’t right to stay there alone, so he had moved back.
After tidying up, he went back down to the living room, looked around, organized a few things, and occasionally glanced up toward the study on the second floor.
He was anxious.
But he couldn’t retreat!
“General Wen Su is in, right?” he leaned in and whispered to the robot butler.
The robot butler nodded its round mechanical head. “He is in the study.”
He Yuan’s eyes darted around. “Did he say when he would finish work?”
The robot butler slowly shook its head again. “He did not.”
Conflicted.
But still, no retreating!
Sitting on the sofa, he composed his words for a while before sending a message to Wen Su.
[General Sir, Iām back. are you busy right now? I have something I want to tell you.]
His hands trembled as he typed. His heart pounded wildly after sending it. Then, ding-dong, Wen Su replied instantly. He Yuan jolted, almost afraid to look!
Subconsciously, he hoped Wen Su would say he was busy and to wait. But in reality, the screen clearly displayed a single word: “Okay.”
Followed by a supplementary sentence: [Come up. I’m in the study.]
…Come up.
It felt like he was about to face a storm.
He Yuan squeezed his fists again.
He took a deep breath.
Let’s do this.
Entering the study, the afternoon sun filtered through the half-drawn curtains of the floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a beautiful interplay of light and shadow.
Wen Su stood by the window, bathed in that light, gazing outside.
“General Sir,” He Yuan greeted politely.
Wen Su paused for a moment before turning around. It was clearly the same person, yet suddenly, He Yuan felt a sense of distance, a sense of unfamiliarity.
“Is the school matter settled? Was the journey smooth?”
“Mm.” He Yuan lowered his head, feeling incredibly guilty.
There was no school matter at all. The journey was indeed smooth, except for running into the Tulip Admiral.
He never wanted to lie.
He couldn’t deceive Wen Su anymore.
“General Sir, I… I…”
“Don’t be nervous. Sit down and talk.”
Wen Su walked behind the desk. He Yuan moved over slowly and pulled out the chair opposite him.
Sitting with his head bowed, it was strange; he felt like a criminal on trial.
Fingers twisting together, finally, finally, he threw caution to the wind.
He looked up.
“General Sir, actually, I really was just a life assistant from the start, not a matching Omega sent to help you through your courtship period! All core generals have life assistants, you probably just didn’t pay attention… I-I didn’t mean not to say it, I didn’t know you actually thought… thought…”
“I am already clear on this point,” Wen Su calmly interrupted the slightly agitated He Yuan. “That is not important. What is important is, what then?”
He Yuan froze.
What then?
General Wen Su meant…
He swallowed hard.
“I… I still want to… be a life assistant.”
He didn’t explicitly say whether he loved him or not, but it was already very clear.
Wen Su fell silent.
Time flowed, the light shifted, and the study seemed to dim a little.
Pressure gradually built up.
In fact, there was a gap between the Wen Su in front of He Yuan and the real Wen Su. In front of He Yuan, considering he was a weak Omega, Wen Su had restrained much of his sharpness from the beginning. Later, having fallen for him, his gentleness and doting went without saying.
But now, the gentleness and doting were sealed away. Facing reality, Wen Su revealed more of his original self.
After all, he was the powerful Alpha that the entire Star Source Alliance took pride in and submitted to.
Sitting opposite him without saying a word, scrutinizing him from above like this, He Yuan became nervous.
He heard his own heart beating faster and stronger. His breathing quickened, and he subconsciously said, “S-sorry, General Sir, I’m sorry.”
“Why say sorry?” Wen Su finally spoke.
He Yuan thought for a moment and said, “Because… because I kept dragging it out. If I had told you earlier…”
“Why did you keep dragging it out?”
“Because… I wasn’t sure before what was… the right thing to do.”
“Are you sure now?”
Wen Su pressed him hard, concise and to the point, finally helping He Yuan strip away the minor details of his thoughts, leaving only the main trunk.
He Yuan nodded.
“Mm, I’m sure. Honesty is the right thing.”
After saying this, his whole body felt light, as if the entire sky had brightened.
But looking out the window, the real sunlight was gone. The sky was dim; it looked like it was about to rain.
Wen Su stood up and walked to the window to gaze out again, his silhouette perfect against the backlight.
After a long, long time, he said, “I understand. You don’t need to apologize. I was the one who made the mistake, so naturally, I should be the one to apologize. Besides, I also…”
He Yuan quickly stood up and waved his hands. “It-it doesn’t matter!”
He knew what Wen Su was going to say. It was strange; theoretically, an Omega being accidentally marked should be hard to accept, but he… he was actually okay with it.
“However, I cannot continue to fulfill your wish to be a life assistant. You should leave.”
“I only learned in the last two days that arranging life assistants was actually using generals for research. I cannot accept this. I will clarify this with the military, so rest assured, even if I dismiss you, it won’t affect their evaluation of you.”
“Since you are still a student, go back to school and study hard.”
He Yuan: …………
This was the first time. Hearing Wen Su wanted to dismiss him, there was no surprise, no resistance, no anxiety, only a feeling that it was meant to be.
There was only a very shallow, very shallow regret and sadness.
“It’s raining,” Wen Su said, looking out the window. “Suit yourself. If you want to leave now, leave now. If it’s inconvenient, waiting until it clears up is fine too. Whenever is fine. If there’s anything else you need or hasn’t been resolved, feel free to ask.”
But there was nothing left.
He Yuan said silently in his heart.
He could only leave.
Turning around, he walked step by step toward the study door.
As he held the door handle, he turned back, wanting one more look. Just one look.
…Maybe the last look.
It really was raining outside.
It started just like that, even though the sun was shining brightly not long ago.
The rain grew heavier, smashing drop by drop against the clean, transparent window, seemingly piercing through the glass to stain General Wen Su’s handsome profile.
The door opened slowly, then closed gently with a thud.
He Yuan was gone.
Wen Su remained standing by the window, expressionless the whole time, letting his heart churn like the dark clouds of this rainy day.
Half an hour later, He Yuan appeared, carrying his backpack, wearing a raincoat, and dragging his suitcase.
Wen Su lifted his eyes to check the intensity of the rain.
Today, he verified everything with his superiors and figured it all out, except for He Yuan’s true feelings. So after He Yuan returned, he guided him to say it personally, to personally turn that sharp blade toward him and pierce his heart.
He desperately mobilized all his reason to stop himself from using forceful means to detain He Yuan directly.
Honestly, he really, really wanted to. But what was the meaning of obtaining a caged bird?
What he liked, after all, was the lively, cute, optimistic, motivated, and unfettered angel who stood by the flower bushes downstairs, watering and weeding with enthusiasm, chatting happily with the plants.
He hated vanity and pretension, hated artificiality, but at this moment, he was willing to use all the beautiful words from ancient times to the present, from Earth to the stars, from all civilizations, nations, countries, and languages, on He Yuan.
Once, he thought their affection was mutual. He thought he was his Omega.
What a moving past, what a beautiful lie.
On the broad road leaving the base, He Yuan walked in the rain, unable to say what his mood was right now.
Suddenly, a sedan drove past him and stopped ahead. A young man got out of the car and stood very politely facing him.
He Yuan stopped.
The man bowed slightly and said, “General Wen Su sent me to take you to the sky-rail station.”
He Yuan suddenly understood. He smiled politely too, waved his hand, and said, “No need, the rain is lighter now, I can walk.”
The man said, “General Wen Su ordered it.”
The tone was still polite, but the meaning was very forceful.
It wasn’t that he really couldn’t refuse, but forget it; leaving faster was good too.
He got into the car. The man helped him settle his luggage, then drove without a word, eyes fixed on the road ahead.
It was too quiet.
He Yuan felt a bit awkward and looked for a topic: “Are you General Wen Su’s subordinate?”
“Yes.”
Concise.
He Yuan smiled, trying hard not to let the atmosphere freeze, and continued: “Thank you for driving me! I am General Wen Su’s life assistant, we… um.”
Habits indeed couldn’t be broken in a moment.
“I used to be.”
He whispered embarrassedly, lowering his head, his face a little hot.
Unexpectedly, the man said, “Mm, I know of you.”
He Yuan paused.
He had been a life assistant at this base for over three months and many things had happened, but apart from Wen Su, he had never seen anyone else.
He certainly knew the base had living quarters, training areas, and military restricted zones, with many soldiers of different ranks stationed there. But in his real life, those were all concepts.
The only real existence in his real life was Wen Su.
So he subconsciously assumed Wen Su was like him.
Therefore, when he left, he was still worried: without him, could General Wen Su continue to live well?
Now it seemed he worried for nothing.
General Wen Su had the military’s highest-level treatment, a robot butler, and many, many subordinates.
He had everything and had lived very well from the start.
Instead, it was he who had forced his way in with self-righteous purposes.
He had thought too highly of himself.
Now, thanks to General Wen Su driving him away, he should calm down again and live his life with his feet on the ground.
