Chapter 6
Before he could look up to see what was happening, his phone screen went dark without warning.
He widened his eyes, instinctively tapping the screen twice, then pressing the power button to try restarting it, but to no avail.
Immediately afterward, he heard a light, crisp thud.
The paparazzi frantically looked up and saw a man in a dark blue uniform standing at the bow of the boat. He grabbed his leather gloves and patted the cuffs, brushing off some dust. He silently examined the paparazzi for a moment, as if confirming something, then politely smiled. “Mr. Wang. Excuse me, there’s something that might require your cooperation.”
The paparazzi’s mind was a mess; cold sweat poured down his face.
Who was this person, and where did he come from?
The boat slowed down, almost to a stop, gently rising and falling with the waves. The paparazzi wasn’t sure how this man had gotten onto the boat. He took two steps back, unsure where to run.
He forced himself to remain calm, his mind racing. “Who are you? What do you want?”
The man didn’t hesitate, walking toward him and answering, “Overworked field agent. You won’t remember me soon, but since you asked, out of courtesy, let me introduce myself…”
Before the paparazzi’s consciousness faded and the scene before him grew dim, he vaguely heard a name.
“Gu Ze Xi, Supernatural Management Bureau, Confidential Department Three.”
A husky voice, low and quiet, with a faint, distant scent of tobacco.
“Protecting your life safety and stable life.”
Five minutes later, the belated deputy officer, wearing a life jacket, waved from a speedboat, skillfully grabbing a pre-hung rope and climbing onto the boat.
Gu Ze Xi leaned against the cabin, dozing. He lazily opened one eye a crack, casually tilting his head slightly to the lower left. “Take him home.”
The deputy officer glanced over and chuckled.
The boss was quite considerate. The middle-aged man was sleeping soundly, lying neatly on the deck, his hands folded in front of him. The sea breeze was quite cool, and Gu Ze Xi had covered him with his uniform jacket.
Anyone would praise his meticulous care; truly, you can’t judge a book by its cover.
The field team members worked together, quickly taking the sleeping man to another speedboat.
After dealing with the trouble, Gu Ze Xi went to his room on the returning boat. Everyone at the bureau knew he was exhausted from working non-stop, so no one disturbed him.
Gu Ze Xi lay down, resting on one arm, staring at the swaying ceiling for a while, silently unlocking his phone.
The roughly cropped image showed Berlin turning his face, his lips slightly pursed.
This was the umpteenth time Gu Ze Xi had encountered something related to Berlin.
To be precise, each incident seemed to have no direct connection to Berlin; he was merely a bystander swept into the situation. But inexplicably, he always appeared on the scene.
Only the first time was a pure coincidence. He thought it was a chance encounter, but it happened again and again, with no sign of stopping.
He had just finished a mission the night before, chasing an alien creature across three cities, finally bringing the dangerous situation under control. He was on the verge of collapse, so he finally used his vacation time to relax for two days.
He wasn’t wearing his uniform, opting for casual sportswear. He went downstairs to the convenience store to buy instant noodles.
There were small tables and chairs outside, where office workers would occasionally eat. Someone was there today.
Gu Ze Xi had a professional habit, instinctively observing first—
A high school student, wearing a blue and white athletic uniform rather carelessly. The cuffs were rolled up, revealing a section of fair, young arm, exuding the youthful energy unique to teenagers.
He sat under an umbrella with a white sports crossbody bag, holding a plastic fork. His fluffy hair was damp, and he impatiently lifted the lid of his noodles, stirred them, and without waiting for the steam to dissipate, tried to eat them.
Gu Ze Xi was very experienced with eating instant noodles. He slightly opened his mouth to stop him, but was too late.
The next second, as expected, the boy burned his mouth, steam practically rising from his head, his hands waving wildly in the air.
Gu Ze Xi: “…”
Typical teenager, a naturally clumsy type.
Because of this, Gu Ze Xi, who usually didn’t pay attention to appearances, belatedly realized that this student was quite good-looking.
After burning his mouth, he was even more rosy-cheeked. Gu Ze Xi wasn’t usually fond of clumsy people, but this boy’s clumsiness wasn’t stupidity; his every move was endearing.
Gu Ze Xi bought his noodles and came out. There was only one table and four chairs. They shared a table.
As every indifferent adult would, he didn’t greet the boy.
The noodles needed time to cool. Gu Ze Xi was bored and looked around, seeing a familiar cat silently emerge from the greenery.
He raised an eyebrow, thinking the little thing still had a conscience. He had fed it a few times, and it seemed to remember him.
Gu Ze Xi didn’t move, waiting for the cat to approach him.
The cat was indeed heading in this direction, purposefully. However, Gu Ze Xi watched it move quickly, its eyes gleaming as it circled the high school student’s legs affectionately, its round, fluffy head rubbing against the boy’s leg.
Gu Ze Xi:…… Did it not see me? Did it mistake someone?
The high school student, approached by a stray cat, curiously bent down. He put down his plastic fork and scratched the cat’s head. “Hello there? What’s your name?”
The cat was intelligent. It purred contentedly, tilting its head at Berlin, and meowed cooperatively.
As if annoyed by Gu Ze Xi watching, the cat deliberately turned its head to glare at him, then went back to rub against Berlin’s palm.
Gu Ze Xi expressionlessly: “…”
Good, confirmed, this person and cat met for the first time.
Not so good, confirmed, this cat is a bit biased.
The last time he fed it and tried to scratch the cat’s chin, he was fiercely scratched.
It was just a harmless little incident. Even if Gu Ze Xi was speechless, there was nothing particularly noteworthy about it.
The problem was that in the next few minutes, inexplicable things happened.
The cat stayed with Berlin, and soon, a second cat appeared from nowhere, running to Berlin’s side, tilting its head at him.
Then a third, a fourth…
Gu Ze Xi paused, his hand holding the plastic fork, frowning subtly and putting his hand in his pocket.
—Even if it’s a human catnip, it shouldn’t be this popular, right?
He kept staring at Berlin, who was helplessly dealing with the increasing number of cats, speeding up his noodle-eating pace, his other hand tightening his bag strap, as if unsure what to do and ready to run away at any moment.
Based on his professional thinking, when encountering the unexplainable, Gu Ze Xi’s first reaction was to take out his detection device and point it at the person.
If the abnormal value digits started jumping, it meant there was a problem with the person.
Gu Ze Xi’s intuition was sharp; it had never been wrong.
He stared at the instrument dial, already on guard, ready to contact the department.
But the results came quickly.
Source Energy Value: [0].
