Chapter 21: Caught Red-Handed Drugging the Target part 1
Qi En’s hand trembled, and the packet of powder slipped from his grasp. Well, that settled it; there was no need to agonize over the dosage anymore.
Aside from what fell onto the table, the rest had all shaken into the wine.
Qi En’s heart plummeted along with that thin packaging, his body trembling slightly.
Cheng Xun stood behind him, tilting his head to look at Qi En’s profile.
Seeing the sweat on Qi En’s temple, he reached out and wiped it away.
Qi En didn’t have time to react. Only after a moment did he sluggishly shy away to the side.
His fingers unconsciously kneaded the hem of his shirt, his knuckles turning white. It was as if he used immense strength, delusionally hoping to pin his uneasy heart onto that small corner of fabric.
The people behind them sensed something and asked, “President Cheng, what’s wrong?”
It sounded like someone was coming over.
Qi En panicked even more.
He really wanted to run away, but if he ran now, he would definitely be caught.
“It’s nothing. I saw someone I know; we’re just catching up.” Cheng Xun didn’t let them come over.
Cheng Xun looked down. “What is that?”
Feeling the breath on his shoulder and the side of his neck, Qi En’s voice came out in broken fragments: “It… it’s sugar.”
“Sugar?”
“Yes…” Even a single word was delivered with a tremble.
“You put sugar in wine?” Cheng Xun’s tone was suspicious; he clearly didn’t believe it.
Qi En was speechless. He racked his brain, but his mind was filled with I’m done for, I’m done for, Am I going to die?, What do I do now that I’m caught?, and He’s too close, Little D please don’t speak right now or Cheng Xun will hear you.
Cheng Xun stepped out from behind Qi En and looked at his face.
Qi En’s expression was uglier than crying. He looked up, blinking rapidly at Cheng Xun, his eyelids twitching. The corners of his mouth seemed to want to squeeze out a smile, but it looked neither like a smile nor a cry.
It looked as if he were being coerced.
Qi En opened his mouth, shaking out a few malformed syllables: “The wine is too spicy. The supervisor said… said putting sugar in it makes it taste better…”
He subconsciously shifted the blame.
He knew it was bad to say that, but if he didn’t, he was going to die.
“Is that so?”
“Yes, I… I’ll wipe the table first.” Qi En didn’t care if the mission could be completed anymore. He picked up a rag to wipe the table, then picked up the wine bottle to put it back on the cart, intending to leave.
Cheng Xun stopped him. “Wait. Didn’t you say it tastes better this way? Why take it away?”
Qi En couldn’t leave even if he wanted to. He had to stand still. “But don’t you dislike drinking it like this…”
“I’ll try it.”
“Huh?” Qi En’s eyes widened, then quickly lowered, shifting left and right, afraid to meet his gaze.
“Pour it for me.”
“Oh, okay.”
Qi En responded very quietly.
His pouring movements were unskilled, knocking over this and that.
Qi En peeked at Cheng Xun, who was looking towards the sofas. Fortunately, he hadn’t noticed Qi En’s clumsiness.
“You’re working part-time here?” Cheng Xun asked suddenly.
Qi En wiped the wine glass and nodded. “Yes.”
“How long have you been doing it?”
Is he starting to investigate me?
Qi En was restless, and in a moment of inattention, he told the truth: “Just started. I’m an hourly worker.”
“No wonder you’re so unskilled.”
Fortunately, he had stumbled upon the correct answer by mistake.
Qi En poured a full glass of wine, held it with both hands, and handed it to Cheng Xun.
Hunching his shoulders, he spoke timidly, “Done. You try it.”
Try a glass this full?
There was still a bit of undissolved “sugar” floating on the top layer of the wine.
Qi En swallowed nervously, his throat dry as dust.
Cheng Xun took it, the rim of the glass resting against his lips.
Qi En forgot his fear in that moment, staring intently at Cheng Xun’s mouth.
Cheng Xun paused. He didn’t drink, but instead moved the glass slightly away from his lips.
A hint of disappointment flashed through Qi En’s eyes.
Cheng Xun was indeed not that easy to fool.
Cheng Xun suddenly asked, “Does this wine count towards your commission?”
Qi En didn’t know, but he subconsciously gave an “Mn.”
Cheng Xun tipped his head back and drained it in one go.
Wine trickled down from the corner of his mouth. In a flurry of panic, Qi En pulled two tissues and pressed them against the corner of Cheng Xun’s mouth.
Cheng Xun had just finished drinking. He put down the glass, took the tissues from Qi En’s hand, and pressed down on the back of Qi En’s hand as well.
Qi En shuddered and pulled his hand out.
Realizing his reaction was a bit excessive, he hurriedly lowered his head, not knowing how to react, so he simply kept pouring wine.
Another full large glass.
He held it with both hands and handed it to Cheng Xun again.
Cheng Xun smiled helplessly. “Are you trying to get me drunk?”
Qi En, dazed, gave another “Mn.”
Watching Cheng Xun about to drink this glass too, Qi En didn’t dare look at him anymore.
He didn’t know what he was doing. He opened the wine meant for the next private room as well and placed it on the table.
The sound of breathing beside him was a bit loud, and an empty glass was set down.
He finished that too?
Qi En looked at him, sluggish for a moment.
Cheng Xun lifted his chin towards the newly opened bottle. “We didn’t order that.”
Qi En snapped back to reality, flustered, and actually tried to stuff the pry-off cap back in.
Cheng Xun stopped him. “No need. Leave it here.”
“Oh, oh.”
“Is there more wine?”
“Yes…”
“Give it to us. I’ll pay the bill.”
“Okay…”
“What about the sugar? Is there more?”
Qi En lowered his head, patted his body, and then looked up to say to him, “No more.”
“Then open all the wine on the cart.”
“Okay.”
Qi En wanted to leave.
But Cheng Xun, having taken the drug, wouldn’t let him go and kept him there opening bottles.
He did it on purpose, right?
Deliberately making things difficult for him.
Qi En couldn’t think of any other reason.
He wasn’t skilled at opening bottles to begin with, especially the ones with wooden corks.
He had crumbled the wood, yet still hadn’t pulled the cork out.
Instead, the table was covered in debris.
The web of Qi En’s thumb and his palm, gripping the corkscrew, were red and rubbed a bit raw.
He secretly raised his eyes to look at the person beside him.
After meeting Cheng Xun’s gaze, he hurriedly lowered his head again, fiddling with the bottle cap.
Cheng Xun didn’t leave, nor did he speak; he just watched him like this.
Qi En bit his lower lip, his eyes feeling hot, his vision blurring slightly.
He said he wouldn’t be a streamer anymore because he found a “main job” like this?
Hard work that doesn’t pay well—why on earth would he do this?
Cheng Xun: “Did your friend introduce this job to you again?”
“Mn…”
“That friend from last time?”
“Which time?” Qi En asked in a small voice. Distracted, the movements of his hands slowed down.
It seemed he couldn’t do two things at once.
“The golf course time, or the time at the club.”
Qi En was still thinking about how to answer when Cheng Xun suddenly stopped asking about it, perhaps thinking Qi En didn’t want to answer.
“Alright.”
“Hm?” Qi En pursed his lips and looked up at him.
“No need to open anymore. Leave the wine here. Go get busy.”
“Okay…” Qi En pushed the small cart to leave.
Cheng Xun suddenly called him again.
Qi En’s hair stood on end, his shoulder blades trembling with tension.
“When do you get off work?”
“…I’m here to cover a shift, I’ll be off soon.” Qi En didn’t give a specific time.
Finally out.
He returned the cart and took new wine to the adjacent private room.
Unexpectedly, as he passed Cheng Xun’s private room, he saw Cheng Xun leaning against the doorway, arms crossed.
Qi En lowered his head, pretending not to see him as he passed quickly.
Cheng Xun lowered his gaze, his eyes following Qi En’s figure until Qi En entered the next room.
After a while, Qi En came out pushing the cart. He was still bowing his head, sneaking a peek to the side. Seeing the leather shoes still at the door, he knew Cheng Xun hadn’t gone in.
