Part 2
He felt the gaze on him becoming more obvious.
The fine hairs on the back of Qi En’s neck stood up, and he quickened his pace.
Cheng Xun’s voice rang out behind him: “Wait for me after work.”
“Wu…”
Qi En walked even faster.
Only when Qi En’s figure was no longer visible did Cheng Xun withdraw his gaze and enter the private room.
.
“Manager, my family member suddenly fell seriously ill. I have to go back and see them. I’m sorry, I’ve only worked for less than an hour.”
“It’s fine, it’s fine. Family matters are important.”
“Thank you, Manager.”
“Come with me, I’ll settle one hour’s wages for you. And there’s the commission for the wine you just sold.” The manager tapped on the calculator, tallying the drink commission with Qi En. “Two bottles of Martell, two Bacardi, three Grange, one Yamazaki, one Macallan… the total commission is this amount.”
Five thousand?!
Qi En was dumbfounded. He didn’t expect to execute a mission and get such a windfall.
Was he born with financial luck?
The manager inquired, “How did you sell so much wine? You sold more than our top sales champion does in two or three days.”
Qi En scratched his face. “Just… put more wine on the cart?”
“It’s fine if you don’t want to say,” the manager asked. “Will you come back for part-time work later? Do you want to become a regular employee?”
“Three-month probation, food and accommodation included, formal post after one week of training.”
Qi En waved his hands. “No need, I have other part-time jobs.”
“Alright then. Contact me when you want to come. This is my card.”
“Okay, thank you, Manager.”
Qi En changed back into his own clothes and returned to the dessert shop.
His cake was still sitting properly on the table.
Looking at the extra balance on his phone, he mechanically forked a piece of cake into his mouth.
Dai Mu, who had watched the whole process from the other end, was also a bit silent.
After a while, Dai Mu murmured, “That’s it? Completed?”
Qi En responded absentmindedly, “Mn…”
“You put all the powder in?”
“Mn… spilled a little on the table too.”
“He didn’t suspect a thing?”
“Seems like he didn’t.”
“He drank it all?”
“Drank half.”
“…”
Qi En couldn’t quite believe things went so smoothly. He asked, “Does the One Billion have some kind of immunity to all poisons? Is that why he’s not afraid of me poisoning him?”
“Maybe… a normal person wouldn’t believe that was white sugar,” Dai Mu said, then added, “Wait, that’s not right. He seemed to genuinely not believe it was poison. Even if he guessed it was medicine, he wouldn’t just drink it straight down.”
Qi En: “Does that mean I’m pretty amazing? He didn’t suspect me at all.”
Dai Mu: “…Maybe. Did he tell you to wait for him after work just now?”
“Yes.”
“Ignore him. Pretend you’ve already left. Wait for him to finish eating and the drug to kick in, then follow him. By then, he will have lost the ability to resist. You can take advantage of the situation and take him down in one go. Make sure not to let him see your face.”
“Mn!” Qi En finished the cake in two or three bites, leaving not a speck of cream on the plate.
Then he wiped his mouth and put on his mask.
Qi En let Dai Mu remotely charge his phone while playing Eros Blocks.
Unknowingly, two hours passed, and he finally saw that group of people come out.
Three or four bosses in suits and leather shoes, plus the glasses guy he saw at the elevator, but Cheng Xun was nowhere to be seen.
Qi En guessed Cheng Xun went to look for him.
He waited patiently a while longer.
But still no sign of Cheng Xun.
Normally, Cheng Xun would ask the manager or supervisor, learn that Qi En had got off work, and should have come out.
Could it be that the drug took effect early, and he fainted inside?
Qi En pressed his earpiece. “Little D, can you find where the Rank One is right now?”
Qi En switched between calling him Rank One and One Billion at will.
Dai Mu: “Cheng Xun went out the back door.”
Qi En grabbed his things and quickly followed.
On both sides were gray-black brick walls, and not far away was the brightly lit metropolis.
This was a construction site; withered grass squeezed out from the cracks in the bricks, trembling in the wind.
A thin mist floated above the site, impenetrable by the streetlights.
He followed Cheng Xun here, unable to find a moment to strike.
Cheng Xun walked staggeringly, tripping over stones underfoot several times, yet never actually falling.
Having finally moved from the crowded area to here, Qi En wanted to act quickly, but the rubble-like construction waste underfoot trapped him too.
He stepped on loose stones several times, making small crunching sounds that attracted Cheng Xun’s attention.
Fortunately, there were dilapidated walls on both sides where Qi En could hide.
But this time, when he walked out from behind the wall, he couldn’t see Cheng Xun anymore.
Qi En hurriedly pressed his earpiece, about to speak, when suddenly, he felt a chill behind him.
It felt like a breeze scraping past his neck.
But where would the wind come from here?
Qi En froze all over, tremors climbing from his knees to his thighs, then shooting up his spine to his shoulders.
“What a coincidence.”
It was Cheng Xun’s voice.
His breath slid past Qi En’s ear, carrying a strong scent of alcohol.
Qi En was wearing a mask and hat, wrapped up tight. How could Cheng Xun recognize him even like this?
Qi En hadn’t exposed his identity.
He suddenly thought, why did Cheng Xun walk to this place? Did he lure him here on purpose?
There was no one here; Cheng Xun could kill him easily.
But Cheng Xun’s drug was taking effect now…
Qi En gripped the handle of the dagger peeking out of his sleeve with uneasy hesitation.
“I mistook you for someone else?” As Cheng Xun spoke, his fingertips seemed to gently touch behind Qi En’s ear.
“Is it really not you?”
Qi En’s body trembled uncontrollably. Even so, he had to encourage himself internally.
He lowered his voice, speaking in a deep tone:
“It’s not me.”
“…”
Cheng Xun was amused by Qi En’s cuteness.
“Okay, not you.”
After realizing what he had said, Qi En almost cried at his own stupidity.
He wanted to speak, but the words he spat out were chopped to pieces by his trembling breath:
“I… I don’t know you. I wasn’t following you. You were the one who asked me to wait for you, and then you left first…”
Far away, Dai Mu could only see a blurry shadow through the monitor. He comforted Qi En from the other end: “That’s right, that’s it. Since you’ve been discovered, don’t engage him directly. Bluff your way through first.”
Listening, Qi En quietly pushed the dagger that had slipped out back into his sleeve.
“Distracted? What song are you listening to?”
“No…!”
Qi En’s ear felt empty; the earpiece had been taken off by Cheng Xun.
He instinctively reached out to snatch it back, but Cheng Xun blocked him, fully prepared.
Cheng Xun looked at him and put the earpiece in his own ear.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Qi En was so nervous he felt like his windpipe was being strangled. His Adam’s apple bobbed mechanically up and down, but he couldn’t swallow that breath.
The clothes on his back were soaked through, the fabric sticking to his skin.
The tip of his tongue unconsciously licked his dry lips, repeating this action several times within the short silence.
“What song is this?” Cheng Xun asked.
Qi En didn’t know how to answer.
After all, Cheng Xun was truly cunning. Maybe he had already discovered it was Dai Mu on the other end and was just tricking Qi En.
In just a few seconds, various answers ran through Qi En’s mind.
“You don’t know what song it is either?”
“Mn…”
In the end, Qi En went along with the answer Cheng Xun provided.
Cheng Xun curled the corner of his mouth and handed the earpiece back.
Just as Qi En was about to take it, Cheng Xun pulled it back.
The shock on Qi En’s face could no longer be hidden, and he even got a little anxious from being teased.
“Can we listen together?”
“I only have one earphone.” Qi En tilted his head, showing him the other ear without an earphone.
Cheng Xun didn’t give it back but continued to ask, “Then where is your other earphone?”
What two earphones? This isn’t an earphone; it’s a single-sided communicator! It’s very expensive!
Cheng Xun returned the “earphone” to him.
Afraid Cheng Xun would suddenly change his mind, Qi En snatched it back very quickly.
