Chapter 59: You Are So Amazing
That night, when Wen Rong went back and planned to ask Shi Ye on Black Pigeon, he suddenly remembered he had already deleted him. He couldn’t help but regret promising Lin Qizheng.
In the current situation, it seemed even asking would be difficult to achieve.
But if he didn’t ask, they would miss out on 500,000.
【Money is not a problem. Floriman Academy will provide students with any resources, including money.】
Reminded by the System, Wen Rong was instantly pleasantly surprised.
But he soon wilted again. “But the school doesn’t provide resources to students with Yellow Cards, and I even have a Red Card.”
【Zhang Lin doesn’t have a Yellow Card.】
He was suddenly enlightened and immediately asked Zhang Lin if he could apply for funds from the school.
Zhang Lin sent a screenshot.
In the picture, the Student Council rejected Zhang Lin’s application without hesitation, not even writing a reason.
Wen Rong felt strange: [Why can’t Senior apply even without a Yellow Card?]
Zhang Lin: [This involves some factors outside the school.]
[Do you know Zhou Xie’s father is the President? There are some corporations behind his father. The reason they support his father is to get policy benefits during his term.]
[This is the same logic as Zhou Xie being the Student Council President. Zhou Xie will only give the green light to people who have a conflict of interest with him.]
Wen Rong read carefully and couldn’t help but worry. Since Zhou Xie had such unspoken rules, was his father the same?
Wen Rong: [Then will it be very difficult for us to handle the software formalities with the government later?]
Zhang Lin: [It’s easy if you have money. The money spent on favors for these formalities is much more than the development cost.]
His slender hand rested on the keyboard, fingertips unable to press the keys for a long time.
After a while, Zhang Lin sent another message: [It’s okay. What startup doesn’t hit a wall? I’ve talked to them; everyone will contribute a little, and we’ll pull in some investments. It should be about enough.]
Before sleeping, Wen Rong checked the System’s exclusive store again. Confirming there were no items that could be exchanged for money, he went to sleep helplessly.
He woke up early the next day, his mind clearer after a night’s rest.
Since he proposed the software idea, and the Seniors were contributing money and effort, he couldn’t just sit back and do nothing.
Wen Rong wrote down today’s plan in his notebook: After class, find Shi Ye to ask about the autograph and his future presence on the software.
However, while eating breakfast in the cafeteria, this plan was cancelled.
The cause was a chat between a few boys sitting near him.
“Have you guys felt that Brother Shi is a bit off recently?”
“You noticed it too?”
“Mhm. The Open is next month, but he hasn’t been seen on the tennis court. Isn’t he training?”
“Seems he’s busy with something; hasn’t even hit the punching bag.”
“More than that. He’s been like he’s possessed recently. I had something to report to him yesterday, but seeing his expression, I didn’t dare speak.”
Wen Rong’s classes overlapped with Shi Ye’s most of the time. In the afternoon, they happened to be in the same classroom. During class, he specifically paid attention to Shi Ye’s direction. Shi Ye kept his head down and didn’t listen to the lecture, frowning from time to time. He indeed looked troubled, completely confirming what those boys had said.
Rumble.
When Wen Rong walked out of the teaching building, he was attracted by the sound of thunder. Looking up at the sky, he saw the distance was already pitch black; even lightning couldn’t pierce through the cloud layers.
In such a setting, his mood felt inexplicably low.
Possibly also because his plan had failed.
Wen Rong walked to the cafeteria with an empty mind and grabbed something random to fill his stomach.
When leaving, he received a message from Lin Qizheng asking him to bring food to Room 100. Wen Rong went back and packed some extra food.
By the time he arrived at the Administration Building, half an hour had passed. The sky was even darker. The Administration Building looked like an ancient house in the mountains; light was blocked out, unable to penetrate at all, leaving a patch of dead silence.
Wen Rong walked along a pitch-black path and entered Room 100.
Just as he opened the door, someone lunged at him. “Ahhhhh, Youngest, you’re finally here!”
Wen Rong stumbled back two steps, almost falling, before steadying himself against the door. “What’s wrong?”
“Scared me to death.”
“Did something happen?”
Lin Qizheng flusteredly pulled him inside, immediately closed the door, and even locked it.
Then he stared dead at the window and said, “I felt like there was someone outside just now, but when I opened the door to look, I couldn’t see anyone.”
“No one should be coming here. Where is Senior Zhang Lin?” Wen Rong looked around. “The President doesn’t seem to be here either. They didn’t say in the group chat that they weren’t coming.”
Lin Qizheng covered his face. “If they were here, I wouldn’t be this scared. I suspect our school has too little yang energy and has ghosts.”
“…”
Wen Rong was silent for two seconds. “Senior, have you been watching horror movies lately?”
Feeling his credibility questioned, Lin Qizheng held up his laptop to show Wen Rong. “I’m not lying. Look, someone on the Black Pigeon forum has seen it too.”
[Alumni, I went back to the Administration Building to get something last night and suddenly heard strange noises.]
It felt like a fabricated campus urban legend.
Wen Rong gave Lin Qizheng a little respect. “Senior, I know you aren’t lying. Why don’t you eat something to calm your nerves?”
Lin Qizheng obviously realized Wen Rong’s clumsy attempt to placate him but insisted, “More than one person heard it; others in the thread said so too.”
“Senior, is your software finished?”
“Ahhhhh!”
If ghosts were a stick to the head, the software was like descending from Shaolin Temple to run a gauntlet of sticks. Lin Qizheng completely lost the mind to consider the ghost problem. He tossed the laptop onto the table and opened the box to eat.
Eating and eating, he got full, but there was still a lot on the table. He couldn’t help asking, “Why did you bring so much?”
“I thought Senior Zhang Lin and the President would be here too.”
“Oh, they’re really fighting this time. Don’t get involved.”
Wen Rong gave a muffled “Mhm.” Actually, he felt bad about it.
Feeling truly uncomfortable, he weighed his words. Just as he wanted to ask Lin Qizheng if there was any way to make the two reconcile, Lin Qizheng suddenly jumped up, pointing at the window and screaming, “Ah—”
Wen Rong looked out the window. Vaguely, he seemed to see a human figure, but the sky outside was too dark. Aside from a human outline, he couldn’t see anything clearly.
He got up and opened the door. Unexpectedly, there was no one outside.
Wen Rong instantly felt fearful.
Not of ghosts, but he instinctively feared danger.
Thinking about it, the location of Room 100 was too unsafe. It was behind the Administration Building. Apart from the four members of the News Club, no one else would come here. If an accident happened, it would probably take a long time for anyone to discover it.
Click.
Wen Rong closed the door, locked it, and walked to the window.
“Ahhh, Youngest, why are you still standing there? Close the curtains, quick!”
Wen Rong not only didn’t close them but pressed his head against the glass to reduce the reflection.
But the effect was minimal. He unhesitatingly reached for the switch next to the door.
Click.
As he turned off the lights, Lin Qizheng let out an even louder scream.
“Senior, don’t be afraid. I just want to see clearly who is outside. The glass is a bit reflective.”
Lin Qizheng slapped himself and covered his mouth at the same time.
Knock knock knock.
Suddenly, someone knocked on the door from the outside.
Wen Rong, whose mind had been calm, couldn’t help but get nervous. He had been looking outside just now and hadn’t seen anyone approaching Room 100.
Wen Rong took a deep breath, turned on the light, and quickly grabbed something within reach.
“Who?”
“It’s me.”
A deep voice suddenly drifted in. Wen Rong paused slightly, put down the thing in his hand, and comforted Lin Qizheng. “Don’t panic, it’s Shi Ye.”
Lin Qizheng held up his mouse as a shield. “What if it’s a ghost imitating Shi Ye’s voice… Youngest, don’t open the door.”
Wen Rong had already pulled the door open.
Shi Ye was very tall; his figure could almost block the entire doorway. His head of gray hair hadn’t been treated for a long time, with half an inch of new black growth at the roots.
It must be raining outside. His usually flyaway hair was unexpectedly plastered down strand by strand, reducing the sharpness of his presence.
Under his bangs, Shi Ye’s eyes were dull, with obvious dark circles under his lower eyelids.
Wen Rong turned back and said to Lin Qizheng, “It really is Shi Ye, Senior.”
Shi Ye asked the same question Wen Rong had asked upon entering: “What’s wrong?”
Lin Qizheng asked with a trembling tongue, “Was that you outside just now?”
Shi Ye’s expression changed slightly. Before he could answer, Wen Rong spoke first, “If it was you, answer honestly, otherwise Senior will think it’s a ghost. Ghost stories have been circulating on the forum recently; he was scared.”
“Mhm.” Shi Ye nodded with a muffled sound.
Lin Qizheng finally let out a sigh of relief and put down the mouse. “Then what were you doing outside our room? Scared me to death.”
“I was looking for Wen Rong.”
“Oh, looking for Youngest.” Lin Qizheng relaxed even more. “Why didn’t you say so earlier!”
Wen Rong thought Shi Ye was going to get angry. However, Shi Ye ignored him with a sullen face and instead said to Wen Rong, “I want to talk to you alone.”
Lin Qizheng stood up very sensibly. “I’m going out, I’m going out.”
After speaking, he ran out with his bowl, even winking at Wen Rong behind Shi Ye’s back: Remember the autograph.
Wen Rong: “…”
“Have you not eaten dinner yet?”
Wen Rong covered all the food and moved it to the other side of the table. “The Seniors haven’t eaten yet. Is there something you need me for?”
Clatter.
A small metal gadget landed on the table. Shi Ye sat down opposite him. “The thing Leon gave you. I added a tracking chip. It won’t get lost again.”
Wen Rong was stunned. He didn’t know if he saw wrong, but when Shi Ye took that thing out just now, there were some fine cuts on his fingers. They had scabbed over but hadn’t fallen off yet, looking like recent injuries.
Associating this with the electric drill Senior Leon loved to use, he was instantly shocked: He didn’t hurt himself just to put a chip inside, did he?
“You…”
“Why that expression? Aren’t you happy you found the thing Leon gave you?”
“Thank you.”
Wen Rong didn’t know what to say for a moment. He pursed his lips and reached out to grab the little gadget into his palm—
In that instant, a numbing, tingling sensation rushed up his skin, forcing his fingers to let go.
“Pfft.”
Shi Ye finally stopped pretending to be deep. He crossed his arms, leaned back against the chair, and looked triumphant. “How does it feel to be shocked?”
Wen Rong didn’t answer him. His shallow brows remained quietly relaxed; he simply rubbed his palm.
Silence.
Or rather, a terrifying calmness.
The corners of Shi Ye’s high-lifted mouth dropped.
He had stayed up late for half a month to add a tracking chip inside. Every time he imagined Wen Rong’s expression upon receiving this toy, he couldn’t help but feel excited.
Seeing Wen Rong just now, and remembering him saying he loved to lose his temper, Shi Ye couldn’t resist wanting to make Wen Rong angry too.
But Wen Rong didn’t get angry.
The person who loved to cry at the start of school didn’t even pout.
His emotions really seemed more stable than his own.
A strange feeling of unconvinced yet utterly convinced intertwined in his heart. Shi Ye began to regret going through all this trouble.
“Hey, I—”
Just as he wanted to explain, Wen Rong reached out, picked up the little gadget, and a wide smile stretched across his lips. “It’s so small, yet you were actually able to add a chip inside. You are so amazing.”
Shi Ye froze abruptly.
His heart was like the little gadget in Wen Rong’s hand, being rolled back and forth by his fingertips, getting more and more excited, the sound of its beating clamoring in his ears.
He raised his hand to cover the lower half of his face and exhaled, the moist heat filling his palm.
