Chapter 50
News of Chi Aibei causing a scene earlier somehow reached Chi Mother’s ears. She called Chi Wendong aside to complain. “Why did you bring him? Isn’t he embarrassing enough!”
Chi Wendong had intended to mention that Chi Aibei’s exam results were quite good this time and ask if they should bring him home tomorrow as a reward. However, before he could even speak, he heard Chi Mother’s mouthful of disdain.
Adopted children could be taken out to meet people, and other people’s children could be introduced as godsons, yet she only found her own child embarrassing.
Chi Wendong couldn’t help but remember what Lin Xiu said during their first meetingāIf they don’t even care about their own child, how can I expect them to care about anyone else?
Chi Wendong said, “He came with Lin Xiu.”
At the mention of Lin Xiu, Chi Mother’s brow relaxed slightly.
Also a high school student, Lin Xiu gave off a very intelligent vibe. Although his family conditions were poor, his speech and behavior didn’t lack breeding. Taking a child like that out brought them face; it was a pity she hadn’t given birth to him.
Chi Mother: “Next time, don’t bring him to occasions like this.”
Chi Wendong: “Xiao Bei’s exam results were actually good this time. He…”
Before he could finish, Chi Mother interrupted, “Don’t talk to me about those unpresentable grades of his. Let him score whatever he wants, just don’t bother me with it.”
Chi Wendong’s eyes turned cold.
What right did they have to be parents?
On the other side, Di Zuo was still doubting the fact that Little Sweet Bean was the Chi family’s little fool. How could the boy he fancied be the universally known idiot of the Chi family? Where did he look stupid?
Di Zuo muttered to himself for a long time, and Meng Huaiqing couldn’t be bothered to pay attention to him.
Suddenly, Di Zuo remembered something. “Wait, if he’s the Chi family kid, then what’s the deal with that brother of his? Isn’t his brother Chi Wendong? Then who was the guy who took him away just now?”
Meng Huaiqing asked a passing waiter for a glass of champagne. He took a sip. “I heard he’s the godson the Chi couple recognized.”
Di Zuo had never heard of something so speechless. “Does their family have an obsession with raising other people’s sons? One adopted son isn’t enough, now they’ve got a godson?”
Meng Ying walked over and happened to hear Di Zuo’s words. She said, “Are you talking about Lin Xiu?”
Meng Huaiqing looked at her. “Lin Xiu?”
Meng Ying: “He’s the Chi family’s godson you mentioned. He’s from our school, in the same class as Chi Aibei. A bona fide top student.”
Di Zuo scoffed. “If you put it that way, I get it. What godson? They’re clearly just after his good grades. The Chi couple really put saving face above all else.”
Seeing him speaking without filter, Meng Huaiqing reminded him, “You’re still at their party. Watch your mouth.”
Di Zuo curled his lip. Suddenly, his phone started pinging loudly and incessantly, sounding like a death knell. Meng Ying laughed. “Someone’s sending you a telegram?”
Di Zuo didn’t know who was crazy enough to send messages like this. He took out his phone, paused for a moment, and then grinned.
He held up the phone to show off to Meng Huaiqing. “Look, Little Sweet Bean is contacting me.”
Meng Huaiqing raised an eyebrow. The kid’s reaction earlier clearly showed fear of him; he didn’t think the boy would actively reach out. He was a bit curious. “What does he want?”
Di Zuo unlocked his phone as he spoke. “Of course, he figured it out and wants to…”
Seeing the messages Chi Aibei sent, the smile on Di Zuo’s face froze bit by bit…

“Pfft!” Meng Ying, standing behind him, nearly died laughing when she saw the string of links. “Hahahaha, he’s giving you a legal education! And it’s all about rape. This is a preventative measure against you committing a crime.”
Di Zuo: “…” Sent… sent to the wrong person, right? Definitely sent to the wrong person!
Meng Huaiqing also laughed. He knew that kid wouldn’t actively message Di Zuo after reluctantly adding him. “Fix your habit of flirting with everyone everywhere. Look how scared you’ve made the kid.”
Di Zuo was numb. Growing up, this was the first time he’d been treated as a villain repeatedly. “Do I look that much like a bad guy? If I’m not harvesting kidneys, I’m raping?”
Meng Huaiqing laughed until his shoulders shook. “Who knows what you’ve done.”
While Meng Huaiqing was still laughing, the phone in his hand dinged. It was also from Chi Aibei.
Chi Aibei: [Wheelchair Brother, when are you free? Can I treat you to a meal?]
The mirth in Meng Huaiqing’s eyes hadn’t faded. Seeing Chi Aibei offering to treat him to dinner, he raised his eyebrow slightly.
Di Zuo rarely saw him make such an expression. He asked curiously, “Who is it?”
Smiling, Meng Huaiqing turned his phone toward Di Zuo. Di Zuo looked, and the corner of his eye twitched. “…Why did he send me crime laws but send you an invitation to dinner?”
Meng Huaiqing shrugged. “Probably because I don’t look like a rapist.”
Di Zuo: “…” Shut up!
Chi Aibei decided to invite Meng Huaiqing to dinner only after seeing his name. Meng Huaiqing’s WeChat name was his real name. When Meng Huaiqing introduced himself earlier, Chi Aibei had only half-listened and didn’t know which characters were used. It wasn’t until he saw those three characters that Chi Aibei remembered.
He hadn’t expected the Wheelchair Brother he met at the mall to be a bigshot who appeared infrequently in the novel.
Chi Aibei vaguely remembered that in the novel, Meng Huaiqing was two years older than He Chenjiang and was the heir handpicked by the Meng family patriarch. The Meng family had been rooted in Nan City for years, their industries spanning over half the city. Even after Chi Wendong eventually swallowed up so many companies, he could barely sit as an equal with the Meng family.
The reason Di Zuo dared to go head-to-head with He Chenjiang was that he was childhood friends with Meng Huaiqing. Although the Meng family remained neutral, just based on his relationship with Di Zuo, Meng Huaiqing definitely wouldn’t help He Chenjiang.
Now that this bigshot was lying in his friend list alongside Di Zuo, Chi Aibei felt it would be a waste of a great opportunity if he didn’t do something. So, right after sending those “warnings” to Di Zuo, he messaged Meng Huaiqing.
While waiting for Meng Huaiqing’s reply, Chi Aibei felt it was a bit strangeāthe novel didn’t seem to mention he was disabled.
Meng Huaiqing: [Just the two of us?]
Chi Aibei glanced at Lin Xiu, who was staring out the window in deep thought. With such a big backer, of course, he was securing it for Lin Xiu!
Chi Aibei: [And my brother too. I want to introduce him to you.]
…
The car stopped at the intersection of Xinong Road. Chi Aibei got out, and Lin Xiu said something to the person who drove them back before getting out himself.
Chi Aibei had been well-behaved the whole way, terrified that Lin Xiu would get upset and have the driver send him back to school. He didn’t dare exhale until he saw the car drive away.
Stepping through the gate of Lin Xiu’s home, Chi Aibei felt the satisfaction of a successful scheme.
Lin Xiu turned on the yard lights. Looking at Chi Aibei standing there giggling in his small suit, he suddenly felt a jarring sense of displacement, as if a precious young master from a wealthy family had accidentally stumbled into the slums.
Chi Aibei: “Brother, why do you keep looking at me?”
Lin Xiu lowered his eyes. “Nothing. I suddenly remembered there are no instant noodles at home. Let’s order takeout.” With that, Lin Xiu turned and went inside.
It startled Chi Aibei; he thought Lin Xiu had remembered he was angry with him again.
While waiting for the takeout, the metal lighter in Lin Xiu’s hand never stayed quiet. Click, clack. Every sound felt like a knock on Chi Aibei’s heart.
Chi Aibei sat across the table, his back straight as a board. Finally, he couldn’t take it anymore. “Brother, if you want to say something, just say it. You’re scaring me like this.”
Lin Xiu looked at him. “Why?”
Chi Aibei didn’t understand. “Why what?”
Click. Lin Xiu snapped the lighter shut and tossed it onto the table. He looked at Chi Aibei. “Why are you so invested in my affairs?”
Lin Xiu hadn’t just started wondering this today. Chi Aibei’s various actions made him feel the kid cared deeply about his business, but he couldn’t figure out why. He had even suspected Chi Aibei was like him, returned from the past. But thinking carefully, it seemed impossible. That version of Chi Aibei might have known about his past with He Chenjiang, but he couldn’t have known what happened between him and Jiang Yu, let alone Lin Weimin.
Lin Xiu had intended to digest these doubts on his own, but Chi Aibei’s reaction to hearing his parents introduce him at the gala was too intenseāso intense that Lin Xiu could no longer ignore the question.
Chi Aibei thought Lin Xiu was going to settle the score about him arranging the fight. Hearing this question, the heart he was holding up suddenly settled down. “Because I like you.”
Lin Xiu had heard confessions many times, mostly in mockery, insult, or ridicule. This was the first time someone like Chi Aibei stared wide-eyed and said they liked him with such seriousness.
However, before Lin Xiu could react, Chi Aibei suddenly added shyly, “Like a dad likes a son.”
Lin Xiu: “…”
Lin Xiu stood up abruptly. Chi Aibei jumped, thinking he was about to get hit. He pushed his chair back and stood up straight.
Lin Xiu walked up to him, grabbed his shoulders, and frowned. “Did you drink?”
Chi Aibei froze for a moment, then shook his head. “No.”
Lin Xiu didn’t quite believe it. “Really didn’t drink?”
Chi Aibei continued to shake his head.
Seeing his eyes were fairly clear, Lin Xiu’s brow relaxed slightly. “If you didn’t drink, why are you talking nonsense?”
Last time Chi Aibei got drunk, those cries of “I am your father” had left Lin Xiu traumatized. Hearing Chi Aibei spouting bold nonsense again, his first reaction was that the little fool had touched alcohol while he and Chi Wendong weren’t looking. Maybe it was unintentional, like picking up the wrong drink last time, but this kid’s tolerance was truly abysmal.
Chi Aibei suddenly stood on his tiptoes, pressing his hands on the table for leverage to hoist himself up to Lin Xiu’s face level. “If you don’t believe me, smell me. I really didn’t drink.”
Chi Aibei barely reached Lin Xiu’s nose normally. With this tiptoe maneuver, their gazes were suddenly level. Looking into Chi Aibei’s direct stare, Lin Xiu felt a bit uncomfortable. Just as he was about to back away, he heard Chi Aibei let out a weird noise…
“Awoo, Brother looks even more handsome from this angle!”
As Chi Aibei spoke, he reached out to touch the small mole at the corner of Lin Xiu’s eye. However, before he could make contact, Lin Xiu caught the paw trying to cause trouble.
Lin Xiu pressed down on his head, forcing him back onto the stool. “Keep your hands to yourself.”
The delivery guy shouted from the gate in the yard. Lin Xiu walked out after speaking.
Chi Aibei, failing to touch the mole, twisted his body in dissatisfaction and shouted toward the yard, “Brother is so stingy.”
