Chapter 47: Temporary Mission
When he finally went out again, it was seven days later. The Hehuan Sect was selecting disciples, and Zhao Xianyun sought him out to watch the excitement.
Feng Shi didn’t want to go, but the crowd of adolescent boys and girls clamoring at the door really gave him a headache.
With no other choice, Feng Shi led the white dumpling and slipped out the back door.
The Hehuan Sect’s selection wasn’t much different from other sects; it was just a few methods.
This time, it was the annual test for inner sect disciples, located in a giant canyon beside the Hehuan Sect.
Viewing this canyon from above, yellow sand filled the air, not a blade of grass grew, and the rocks were scorched scorching brown by the sun. Several young disciples dressed in red flew past Feng Shi on their swords, chasing a Sand-Containing Beast lurking in the sand below.
Feng Shi held a piece of watermelon, gnawing on it as he watched with relish.
He hadn’t been sitting long, but the battle below was deadlocked and very engaging. Two of the disciples obviously weren’t ordinary mortals; they were definitely the protagonists among this group.
Feng Shi made a bet with Zhao Xianyun on who would win in the end.
But before Feng Shi could place his bet, Qingqing’s voice suddenly appeared in his mind, issuing a temporary mission.
【Temporary Mission Released: Obtain the Main Storyline Item in the Canyon Abyss: Immortal Herb – Snake-Holding Grass.
Do you choose to accept?】
Hearing this, Feng Shi quickly opened the panel to pause time.
“The Snake-Holding Grass is here?”
【Yes, the system will recommend the nearest collection point based on the Host’s situation~】
Feng Shi: “Where exactly is it? What about the danger factor?”
【Once the Host enters the canyon, the system will prompt you in real-time~ The danger factor is within the range the Host can currently withstand~】
【Furthermore…】 Qingqing kept him in suspense for a moment. Seeing that Feng Shi didn’t look anxious at all, it finished the sentence, feeling bored: 【The reward for this mission is transparent. Upon completion, the Host will receive several low-level talismans and an introductory talisman manual.】
Feng Shi thought, Since the reward is so tempting and waiting around is boring anyway, I might as well get the medicine first.
Among the main mission items, only the Purple Gold Furnace and the Lost Golden Core looked the hardest to get. The road was long; getting things early meant peace of mind early.
So, Feng Shi clicked to accept the mission. He turned his head and greeted Zhao Xianyun, who was laughing back and forth while holding half a melon, saying he heard there was an herb in the canyon that he happened to need and wanted to try his luck.
Zhao Xianyun’s fat face piled up with a smile. “What is it? Do you want me to send someone to accompany you?”
Perhaps out of respect for Xu Yan and Liu Yi, Zhao Xianyun had been consistently polite to him and didn’t ask too many questions.
Feng Shi thought, Free bodyguards, might as well take them. So he obediently thanked him and left with two burly men at the Golden Core stage.
These two Golden Core cultivators didn’t follow the path of the Hehuan Sect; they seemed to be sword cultivators. Their muscles were solid, looking full of security.
Feng Shi originally wanted to leave the white dumpling with Zhao Xianyun, but on second thought, the disciples in the Hehuan Sect, plus Zhao Xianyun, were all indecent. It wouldn’t be good to lead the child astray. If he encountered danger on his end, he could still stuff the person into the account for shelter.
Comparing the two options, Feng Shi decided to bring him along.
Arriving at the trial grounds below, Feng Shi easily entered the depths of the canyon under the protection of the two bodyguards.
【Host, the Canyon Abyss is ahead. Please pay attention to protect yourself.】
Feng Shi stopped upon hearing the voice and turned to the two burly men.
Unexpectedly, the two burly men looked troubled upon seeing where he pointed and seemed reluctant to enter.
“What’s wrong?”
One of the burly men hesitated for a moment before stepping forward. “Young Master should look elsewhere. This place is somewhat ominous. The Sect Master ordered long ago that entry is forbidden.”
Feng Shi pulled up the system and confirmed the danger index with Qingqing again and again. After the other party guaranteed that he definitely wouldn’t die, he said to the two burly men, “Don’t worry, I naturally won’t let Sect Master Zhao blame you. I just have to trouble you two to help me look after my younger brother.”
As he spoke, he pressed on the Little White Dumpling’s shoulder and pushed him over.
Shen Songhe shot a cold glance at Feng Shi, not understanding what he was up to.
Feng Shi squatted down halfway, pinched his full, round little cheek, and instructed, “Be good and wait.”
Shen Songhe frowned at being pinched and swatted his hand away.
Feng Shi switched to rubbing his head and smiled. “I’m off.”
He walked toward the abyss.
Only when close did he see clearly that the abyss was bottomless and pitch-black inside.
The wind blowing up from below was cold and biting.
Feng Shi drew his broken sword, used a spell to enlarge it several times, and then stood on it. The wind blew his long hair, revealing his fair cheeks, and in the blink of an eye, he disappeared from in front of the three of them.
The further he went into the depths of the abyss, the dimmer the light became. It wasn’t until he could barely see clearly that Feng Shi retrieved the Mermaid Heart from the system account.
The vigorous flame was eternally unextinguishable, steadily illuminating the pitch-black abyss.
Feng Shi’s tight heart relaxed slightly because of the light. He asked Qingqing, “What does the Snake-Holding Grass look like, and where is it?”
【Ding dong, please check the image, Host~】
【The location is a bit further down~】
Feng Shi broke out in a sweat on his forehead, flying down cautiously while tapping open the image for a glance.
Darkness always gave people unreasonable fear, and this abyss was truly too deep.
Fortunately, after flying down for a while longer, the originally narrow gorge of the abyss gradually widened. The air was damp, and the sound of water came from below; it seemed there was an underground river.
A point of translucent golden light shot up from below, opening up Feng Shi’s world.
Finally reaching the bottom, his field of vision opened up to the extreme.
This abyss was like a giant narrow-necked vase; the top was narrow and long, while the bottom was wide and short. But this “short” was only relative.
To Feng Shi, this “short” distance was almost dozens of stories high.
The width was boundless.
Down here, centered around the underground river, exotic flowers and rare herbs grew everywhere. That grass emitting golden light grew in lush patches, like twinkling crushed gold. Flower petals and leaves fell into the water, dyeing the entire underground river with a magnificent, fragmented halo of light.
【This grass is called “Trailing Gold Moss.” “Color like gold, big as a chicken egg, shines like fire when placed on clothes.” It has no substantial use, but the Host can pick some for lighting~】
Feng Shi, who had just thought about picking a lot to sell for money, silently withdrew his hand. “Oh.”
【The Snake-Holding Grass grows in the wetlands. Host, look around.】
Feng Shi looked up and happened to see a wetland shaped like a swamp not far away. So he crossed the underground river and flew toward that side, asking as he flew, “Besides the Snake-Holding Grass, are the other two immortal medicines here as well?”
