Chapter 121: Don’t Wait For Me
Xie Miaohan quit his tutoring job.
Now that he was keeping Gu Huaiye confined, he couldn’t go out for part-time work for the time being, fearing that something might happen to Gu Huaiye at home.
Fortunately, their savings were enough to live on. Once Gu Huaiye came around, it wouldn’t be too late for him to go out and work part-time again.
On the way home, Xie Miaohan called a senior schoolmate.
The other party’s family ran a hospital right in District B. If he hadn’t tutored the senior’s younger brother, he would never have had the chance to interact with such people.
“Yes, I want to arrange a full-body checkup for my brother. He looks too frail, and I’m afraid the hospitals in District A might miss something.”
“Okay, sorry to trouble you. When school starts, I’ll treat you to a meal.”
Xie Miaohan hung up the phone and went to the supermarket, planning to make crab soup for Gu Huaiye.
Carrying a bag of carefully selected crabs, he went straight to the kitchen as soon as he entered the house, ready to prepare the ingredients he had bought.
Suddenly, he heard the sound of glass shattering.
His expression changed, and he ran to Gu Huaiye’s room door, pulling out the key to unlock it.
Gu Huaiye had just picked up a shard of glass. Looking up and seeing Xie Miaohan’s panicked expression, he pursed his lips and, with a blank face, pressed the shard against his neck.
In his previous life, he had used this method to gain his freedom.
He wondered if this trick would still be effective against Xie Miaohan, who had no memories.
Realizing what Gu Huaiye intended to do, Xie Miaohan’s breathing became rapid, his chest heaving violently. Yet the words he spoke were extremely soft, as if afraid of startling the person before him.
“Brother, there’s no need to hurt yourself like this. Let’s talk properly. Put down the glass; it will be troublesome if you bleed.”
“I want to leave this place,” Gu Huaiye said. “Now.”
“Brother, you can’t treat me like this.” Xie Miaohan looked at Gu Huaiye helplessly, his voice trembling slightly. “How can you treat me this way? Does staying by my side disgust you so much that you have to threaten me with your life?”
He really wanted to know what Gu Huaiye’s heart was made of.
How could he abandon him again and again?
What did he take him for?
A dog to be summoned and dismissed at will?
“I cannot accept your confession.” Gu Huaiye looked away, avoiding Xie Miaohan’s hurt gaze, his voice somewhat muffled. “You might just be dependent on me, mistaking dependence for love. So we have to be apart for a longer time so you can understand that you don’t actually like me.”
“Isn’t four years long enough?” Xie Miaohan cried. “How many years do you want? How many years do I have to wait for you until you stop abandoning me so casually?”
Gu Huaiye didn’t speak, keeping his head slightly lowered.
Xie Miaohan sniffled and wiped the tear tracks from his face with his hand.
“Brother, I’m willing to take a step back. I promise not to have any improper thoughts about you anymore and will only treat you as my family. Can you stay then?”
He thought this would make Gu Huaiye compromise.
But he hadn’t expected the other to shake his head without leaving any room for negotiation.
“I should go. Our fate ends here. Take good care of yourself.”
Gu Huaiye’s words were like a knife plunging into Xie Miaohan’s chest, the pain turning his face deathly pale. In the extremity of his sorrow, he couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
“Brother, you are really cruel. Do you still remember the promise you made to me before? You made a pinky promise with me, saying you would never abandon me and would always be with me. But you’ve already abandoned me many times, and each time so heartlessly.”
A flash of pain crossed Gu Huaiye’s eyes, and his voice choked up. “I’m sorry. I’m not a good person, so after I leave, forget about me.”
Xie Miaohan looked at Gu Huaiye’s neck and noticed that the glass shard had already drawn blood.
He clenched his fists, finally forcing a weak smile.
“Brother, you win.”
Using almost all his strength, Xie Miaohan said to Gu Huaiye, “How could someone like me expect to find happiness? Brother, I won’t lock you up anymore. Put down the glass; don’t hurt yourself.”
Gu Huaiye stared blankly at the person in front of him.
Exactly the same.
Without any suspense, he had won the gamble again.
Gu Huaiye dropped the glass shard, turned around, and picked up his luggage bag.
“Wait.” Xie Miaohan grabbed Gu Huaiye’s arm and said with difficulty, “You’re bleeding. Let me treat the wound for you.”
“It doesn’t matter.”
Xie Miaohan’s expression was somewhat persistent. “Do you loathe me that much? Unwilling to stay for even a second longer?”
“I don’t mean that…” Gu Huaiye paused, then sighed. “Alright, sorry to trouble you.”
Gu Huaiye sat on the bed while Xie Miaohan knelt on one knee, holding a cotton swab and carefully treating the wound on his neck.
“Be careful when you shower. Don’t let water touch it; it will hurt a lot.”
Gu Huaiye lowered his eyes to look at him. After a long while, he slowly nodded.
“Mn, I know.”
Xie Miaohan spoke again, “Brother, don’t be in such a hurry to leave. I made an appointment for you at a hospital in District B. Isn’t your heart always uncomfortable? The senior I know, his father is an expert in this field. He can help us…”
Gu Huaiye interrupted him. “I’m not going. There’s nothing wrong with my body. Besides, once I go abroad, I’ll get a full-body checkup. You don’t need to worry about these things for me.”
Xie Miaohan bit his lip and didn’t say anything more.
After gauze was applied to the wound, Gu Huaiye was about to leave when Xie Miaohan grabbed the hem of his clothes once again.
Gu Huaiye frowned slightly.
“I bought crabs. I want to eat crab soup, but I don’t know how to make it. Can Brother make this one last meal for me before leaving?”
Gu Huaiye hesitated, then soft-heartedly agreed.
“Okay.”
While Gu Huaiye prepared the crabs in the kitchen, Xie Miaohan stood behind him, watching.
“Brother, I’m sorry.” Xie Miaohan suddenly spoke up. “Is it my love that scared you, making you so anxious to leave me? I can promise you that I won’t indulge in wishful thinking anymore. Can you please not go?”
Gu Huaiye’s eyes gradually reddened, and a tear fell onto a crab shell.
His back was to Xie Miaohan, so Xie Miaohan failed to notice his fragility.
“I…”
Xie Miaohan interrupted him, his tone urgent. “Let’s be apart for another four years. By then, I’ll have graduated. I will definitely become very mature and won’t be dependent on you anymore. I’ll only treat you as an important brother. If that’s not enough, then five years… ten years…”
Seeing Gu Huaiye remain silent, Xie Miaohan said sadly, “It can’t be any longer than that.”
Gu Huaiye took a deep breath and said, “Take good care of yourself. Time is precious; don’t wait for me.”
Xie Miaohan looked helplessly at Gu Huaiye’s back. Then, as if realizing something, he suddenly turned and ran.
Gu Huaiye was stunned. He turned his head to look, but there was only an empty living room.
He sighed, wiped away his tears with his arm, and focused on making the crab soup for Xie Miaohan.
After he finished, he brought the soup out and placed it on the dining table.
Xie Miaohan returned as well, panting heavily, holding a potted wisteria plant in his arms.
Gu Huaiye stared in shock at the object in his arms, his mouth opening but unable to speak.
“Brother, I know your heart is empty, so you can’t fall in love with anyone.” Xie Miaohan offered the wisteria devoutly, the expression on his face fawning and pleading. “Just treat me as that person. If you like his pheromones, I’m willing to undergo surgery…”
Before he could finish, Gu Huaiye slapped Xie Miaohan with an angry face.
“Are you fucking crazy!”
