Chapter 37: The Message
Wen Qiusheng remained sitting on the ground.
He propped himself up with one hand while the other clutched his chest, looking utterly distraught.
“I… I don’t remember anything right now…”
“Stay away from me… please?”
Wen Qiusheng looked pitiful, the rims of his eyes slightly red. “The moment you get close, I feel panicked… I’m scared…”
Shen Zhouyue didn’t get angry. Instead, he asked with a faint smile, “Then, out of everyone here, who makes you feel safe?”
Wen Qiusheng’s gaze wandered among the group.
Present were Shen Zhouyue, Yu Tingzhou, Yu Tingyu, and a few others from the Yu family of Yu Tingzhou’s generation. He wasn’t familiar with them, so naturally, they wouldn’t be his choice.
And he absolutely wouldn’t choose Shen Zhouyue.
That made his choice blatantly obvious.
Sure enough, after his gaze swept across the group, it settled on Yu Tingzhou.
He lowered his head, blushing, and spoke softly, “I don’t know why, but the moment I see him, I feel incredibly happy inside. There’s this inexplicable sweetness… I feel like we must have been a couple before…”
Shen Zhouyue immediately guessed Wen Qiusheng’s plan.
He straightened up calmly and looked at Yu Tingzhou beside him. “He feels only you can give him a sense of security. What are your thoughts?”
Shen Zhouyue’s tone was incredibly flat, as if the person being coveted wasn’t his own husband.
“So, you want him to take care of you, right?”
Wen Qiusheng nodded, but then, as if suddenly remembering something, he lowered his head in embarrassment.
“If… if it’s inconvenient, then just pretend I didn’t say anything…”
Seeing Wen Qiusheng like this, Yu Tingyu couldn’t help but say to Yu Tingzhou, “Brother Tingzhou, look, Qiusheng ended up like this because of Sister-in-law. Now he only trusts you. Why don’t you take him back and look after him for a while?”
From his few interactions with Wen Qiusheng, Yu Tingzhou sensed that this man was scheming and would stop at nothing to achieve his goals. He was highly skeptical about whether this amnesia was real or fake.
Real or fake, Yu Tingzhou had no intention of bringing him back to his private residence.
Faced with the expectant look in Wen Qiusheng’s eyes, Yu Tingzhou replied coldly, “No. I don’t have the time to take care of someone I’m not familiar with.”
“But Brother, Qiusheng is in this state because of Sister-in-law. You guys should take responsibility!”
Yu Tingyu spoke earnestly, clearly hoping Yu Tingzhou would take Wen Qiusheng in.
“Zhouyue already said this has nothing to do with him, yet you keep insisting it’s his responsibility. What is your intention?” Yu Tingzhou looked at Yu Tingyu with displeasure. “Since you brought him here, you take care of him.”
“As for a caretaker, solve that yourself. I don’t have time to waste on such trivial matters.”
Leaving those words behind, Yu Tingzhou looked at Shen Zhouyue. “It’s getting late. Let’s go home.”
Yu Tingyu hadn’t expected that speaking up for “justice” would bring such trouble upon himself. He froze for a moment, then quickly grabbed Yu Tingzhou.
“Brother… you’re my own brother, you can’t just leave me to deal with this…”
“If… if nothing else works, couldn’t you just find a vacant property and let Qiusheng stay there for now?”
“He hasn’t been back in the country for long and doesn’t have a place to stay. Now, because of our negligence, he’s lost his memory. We can’t just abandon him…”
Yu Tingyu looked at Yu Tingzhou pitifully, adopting a pleading posture.
Shen Zhouyue suddenly remembered Wen Qiuning’s desire to meet Wen Qiusheng. Putting on an understanding front, he said, “How about we let him stay with us?”
“Why?” Yu Tingzhou couldn’t understand.
Shen Zhouyue sighed. “If I don’t agree, in the eyes of some people, it will look like I have a guilty conscience. I don’t want to be slandered for no reason.”
Shen Zhouyue’s words puzzled Wen Qiusheng, who had his head lowered, but a look of excitement soon surfaced on his face.
As long as he could live under the same roof as Yu Tingzhou, he would have more opportunities. Then, naturally, he could…
The more he thought about it, the more agitated he became, his body trembling slightly with excitement.
In Yu Tingyu’s eyes, however, it looked like Wen Qiusheng was frightened by Shen Zhouyue’s words.
“Qiusheng… maybe… maybe I should take care of you after all!”
It took a lot of courage for Yu Tingyu to say that. After all, he had zero skill in taking care of people; asking him to care for Wen Qiusheng was no different from locking him in solitary confinement.
But Wen Qiusheng’s target wasn’t Yu Tingyu.
In his eyes, Yu Tingyu was just a silk-pants rich kid, no different from the rest. Living off family money, doing nothing all day—he was far from Wen Qiusheng’s ideal partner. Such a person was easily tricked and couldn’t even protect himself when trouble struck.
Thinking of the hardships he had faced, Wen Qiusheng didn’t even consider Yu Tingyu an option and had no intention of getting entangled with him.
So, he feigned nervousness, tugging at the hem of his clothes. “I… I don’t know you…”
“Are you sure you want him to live with us?” Yu Tingzhou asked Shen Zhouyue. “You’ve only met briefly, and all this has happened. If we live together, who knows what situations might arise.”
Yu Tingzhou didn’t want to be refereeing conflicts every day.
“Then what do you suggest?” Shen Zhouyue countered. “Given his current state, he obviously won’t accept anyone but you. Are we really going to leave him be, or do you plan to let this blow up and let others laugh at the Yu family?”
Once Shen Zhouyue put it that way, Yu Tingzhou stopped hesitating.
He sighed. “Fine, we’ll do as you say.”
A gleam of triumph flashed in Wen Qiusheng’s eyes, disappearing quickly before anyone else noticed—except for Shen Zhouyue.
Shen Zhouyue never believed Wen Qiusheng had lost his memory; he just wanted to see what he was up to, so he didn’t expose him. Later, remembering Wen Qiuning, he decided to tolerate it. Even seeing Wen Qiusheng’s true colors now, he didn’t react.
Upon returning home, Yu Tingzhou settled Wen Qiusheng on the first floor and had his assistant find a caretaker overnight. This time, Wen Qiusheng didn’t show any resistance.
After the arrangements were made, Yu Tingzhou walked into Shen Zhouyue’s room. “Starting now, I’m moving in here.”
Shen Zhouyue looked bewildered, his eyes widening. “Why?”
When he was alone, he could talk to An’an freely. If Yu Tingzhou moved in, he wouldn’t have his own space to chat with his son.
“We are in a marriage agreement. Originally, it was just the two of us, so living apart didn’t matter. But now there’s an outsider in the house. If he leaks anything, it will be trouble.”
Hearing this, Shen Zhouyue realized the logic.
Though somewhat reluctant, he nodded. “Fine, move your things over then.”
“And don’t forget, we are contractually married. I don’t want to hear the things you said in front of my family today a second time.”
Shen Zhouyue understood Yu Tingzhou’s meaning. He nodded, replying somewhat perfunctorily, “Fine, I got it.”
While Yu Tingzhou was showering, his phone suddenly rang.
Shen Zhouyue had no intention of invading anyone’s privacy, but he accidentally glimpsed a message mentioning a child named “An’an,” followed immediately by a photo.
Shen Zhouyue was incredibly sensitive to such information.
He picked up Yu Tingzhou’s phone and used Yunxing’s birthday to unlock it.
Once unlocked, he saw that the sender was named Eric, and the child in the photo was his own An’an.
Perhaps others would think it a coincidence, but as a father, Shen Zhouyue would never mistake his own child, nor would he risk any possibility of exposure.
He glanced at the bathroom, confirming Yu Tingzhou wasn’t coming out anytime soon, then carefully deleted the chat history.
He placed the phone back in its original spot.
His heart was pounding violently, a sense of guilt washing over him.
He had just sat down on the sofa when the bathroom door was suddenly pushed open.
Yu Tingzhou walked out, surrounded by steam. Shen Zhouyue was startled by the noise; he jumped up from his seat before sitting back down.
“You… when did you come out?”
His guilty conscience was too obvious. Yu Tingzhou frowned and asked, “What did you do to look so guilty?”
Shen Zhouyue cleared his throat. “What nonsense. I’m just used to this being my room alone; I just haven’t adapted yet.”
Tangyuan, the cat, let out a soft meow as if agreeing with Shen Zhouyue.
Yu Tingzhou didn’t dwell on it. Drying his hair, he walked to the sofa. “Does your hand need medication?”
Shen Zhouyue waved his hand. “This little injury healed ages ago.”
“I’ll go downstairs to check on Wen Qiusheng. He says he doesn’t remember anything, and being in a strange place, he must be uncomfortable.”
Shen Zhouyue started to get up, but Yu Tingzhou blocked his path.
“Are you avoiding me?”
“Why?”
Shen Zhouyue didn’t dare look at Yu Tingzhou. He lowered his head, fixing his gaze on the carpet. “What nonsense. What is there to be afraid of?”
“I just think we should look after the patient!”
Yu Tingzhou tossed the wet towel onto a nearby table and said meaningfully, “Do you really think Wen Qiusheng has amnesia?”
“Given how much you care about Wen Qiuning and those paintings, it would be impressive enough if you didn’t hate Wen Qiusheng. Yet you’re so charitable toward him? Do you really take me for a fool?”
“Tell me, why exactly did you insist on having Wen Qiusheng come to Fangyuan? Maybe I can help you…”
Before Shen Zhouyue could speak, the room door was suddenly knocked in a rhythmic pattern.
