Chapter 15: A Second Time: Come to My Room
After dinner, Cang Jiu followed behind Xie Qiang, persistently asking, “Your Highness, what was that reform you mentioned?”
“Why do you want to know?” Xie Qiang asked without looking up, busy counting a plate of small fried fish she had taken from the restaurant. “Does this fall under the Tactical Officer’s duties?”
How could it?
Cang Jiu smiled shallowly. “Of course not~”
The youth stepped forward to walk side-by-side with her. He leaned his upper body slightly toward her, his silver-haired ponytail drooping down. The light blue ribbon tying it fluttered with his steps, looking ethereal and free.
Sincerity filled his narrow eyes. “It’s because I want to share Your Highnessâs burdens.”
“I see…”
Xie Qiang pondered for a moment before lifting her clear eyes. “Tactical Officer Cang, are you truly sincere about sharing my burdens?”
Her gaze was excessively clear, without a trace of the usual muddiness or arrogance.
Cang Jiuâs eyes flickered. “Of course. I am willing to serve Your Highness.”
“Then…” Xie Qiang stopped and pointed a small finger at their destination. “Come into my room and we’ll talk.”
Cang Jiu froze, looking up at the room he had visited not long ago.
He felt something was off. Wait, did I fall for her trap again?
Yesterday she used this trick, saying she’d tell him the meaning of “not speaking while sleeping,” only to disappear halfway through, leaving him and that dullard Sen Ji to stare at each other.
Now she was doing it again. Was he going to end up with nothing again tonight?
“What’s wrong?” Seeing Cang Jiu silent, Xie Qiang tilted her head, her large eyes blinking in confusion. “Ah, did I misunderstand? Were your words just perfunctory flattery…”
Her small face was written with the words: So you really are a liar!
Cang Jiuâs smile twitched. “Of course not, Your Highness. I am sincere.”
Now he had to go in. Cang Jiu stuffed his hands in his pockets, a standard fox-like smile on his face. “Then let’s go in and talk.”
Xie Qiang nodded and opened the door.
There were no sensor lights in the entrance, and the house was pitch black. It looked like the gaping maw of a Zerg, waiting to swallow a piece of fat meat.
A sudden chill ran down his neck. Perhaps it was his fox-beast intuition, but Cang Jiu had a bad premonition.
After a momentâs hesitation, he stepped inside. What am I afraid of? I’m an S-class Sentinel. Even if she tries to use force on me, that kitten-like strength is nothing to fear.
Cang Jiu relaxed. “Your Highness, I’m coming inâAAAAAAAAAH!”
The youth suddenly jumped back, hiding behind Xie Qiang. His fluffy head peeked out from behind her shoulder, his face full of lingering fear. “What the hell is that?!”
Beside the entrance, a tall, lean black figure slowly emerged.
Xie Qiang saw who it was. “Mo Yin?”
Hearing the name, Cang Jiuâs face stiffened, looking utterly displeased. “Your Highness, why is this stinky wolf in your room?”
Why did she always invite two people to her room at the same time?
And they were always his natural enemiesâa golden tiger, then a gray wolf…
Wait?
Snapping out of it, Cang Jiu suddenly looked at Xie Qiang. Could she be trying to intimidate me?!
Sheâs actually improved? She even learned the art of tripartite checks and balances?
“He is my personal guard. I let him stay here to heal,” Xie Qiang explained patiently. She turned on the entrance light and looked at Mo Yin. “Did you finish applying the medicine? Have you eaten?”
Mo Yin lowered his eyes, staring at the girl whose eyes were full of worry. After a long silence, he nodded, then shook his head.
“Hmm, then I’ll go get you some food. Eat these to tide you over for now.” Xie Qiang stuffed the plate of small fish into Mo Yinâs arms.
Actually, the upcoming situation was a bit inconvenient for her to stay, so she used this as an excuse to leave.
Xie Qiang turned to Cang Jiu. “Mo Yin has many wounds. I told him to apply medicine before I left this morning, but I don’t know if he listened. Help me check.”
She gave serious instructions. “Check the top, the bottom, and the front. Check everywhere.”
Cang Jiu looked completely unwilling. “Your Highness… he’s an adult. He can take care of himself.”
Is she doing this on purpose? Asking someone with a fox’s nature to give a wolf a physical exam?
Xie Qiangâs serious gaze gradually turned to disappointment. “So sharing my burdens was really a lie?”
“Then you should leave.” Xie Qiang felt that if he wasn’t willing to do it, there was no need for him to stay.
Cang Jiu didn’t expect her to be so heartless. Since he hadn’t gotten the answer he wanted, he couldn’t bear to leave empty-handed for a second time. He surrendered, raising his hands. “Your Highness, I won’t leave. I’ll do whatever you say!”
He walked toward Mo Yin, hoping the man would resist Xie Qiangâs command. “Mo Yin, Her Highness ordered me to check your entire body for wounds.”
Mo Yin chewed a small fish, silent.
Her Highness ordered the other person to check. She didn’t order him that he must accept the check. Therefore, he didn’t need to be checked.
Seeing them being “good,” Xie Qiang walked to the door. Before leaving, she poked her head back through the crack. “I’ll be back soon. You two behave!”
“Yes, Your Highness,” Cang Jiu said with a smile as he saw her out. As soon as the door closed, his smile vanished.
“Hey.” He walked up to Mo Yin, his arms crossed as he spoke lazily. “When Her Highness comes back, you know what to say, right?”
Mo Yin didn’t say a word, continuing to chew his fish. How many count as ‘tiding me over’?
Seeing him silent, Cang Jiu took a deep breath and closed his eyes helplessly. “Fine. Let’s just fake it.”
With a look of disgust, he reached out and gave a symbolic tug at the corner of Mo Yinâs clothes before quickly retracting his hand and smoothing out his slightly ruffled silver hair.
Damn this fox nature! It made it look like he was afraid of this scrawny wolf!
Mo Yin frowned and smoothed out his clothes.
Neither spoke again. The room fell into a silence broken only by the flickering light.
After a long while, Mo Yin suddenly spoke, his voice low and raspy. “You are the one who stinks.”
Cang Jiu: “?”
Cang Jiu realized Mo Yin was rebelling against the “stinky wolf” label from their first meeting. He let out a chuckle, his tone full of malice. “Only people who have soaked in a water prison stink.”
Mo Yin glanced at him, then lowered his head and returned to his silence.
Seeing the man was out of moves, Cang Jiu sat down on the living room sofa in a good mood.
Xie Qiang, estimating the check was about done, hurried back. She handed the packed meal to Mo Yin and then asked, “Well? Is the check finished?”
Just as Cang Jiu was about to answer, Mo Yin said slowly, “He said you stink.”
Xie Qiang: “Huh?”
Cang Jiu: !!!
Cang Jiuâs eyes went wide. Seeing Xie Qiang turn to look at him, he hurriedly shook his head, his silver ponytail swaying wildly. “I didn’t!”
He glared at Mo Yin. “How can you slander someone like that?”
Xie Qiang also didn’t think Cang Jiu would say such a thing. She couldn’t help but ask, “Is there a misunderstanding?”
Mo Yin looked down at her, his pale lips moving slowly. “He said… people who have soaked in a water prison stink.”
“That’s right!” Seeing Mo Yin hadn’t framed him, Cang Jiu breathed a sigh of relief and explained calmly, “So I said he stinks. I didn’t say it about you, Your Highness!”
Xie Qiang gave Cang Jiu a subtle look.
Cang Jiu: …
Cang Jiu: ?
The calm on Cang Jiuâs face began to crack bit by bit. No way…
“I’m so sorry.” Xie Qiang gave him a look of profound pity. “Last night, I just happened to soak in the water prison.”
