Chapter 7. Resonance on the Wild Field
On the day of the drill, Su Tang got up very early. The morning mist hadn’t yet dispersed when the metal gate of the Third Squad’s training ground let out a piercing screech.
Su Tang stood at the entrance, looking at this venue jokingly called the “Wild Dog Den” by the White Tower Guides in private. Her brows furrowed almost imperceptibly.
She remembered it wasn’t this hideous when she came to see it last time. Was it deliberately made into this terrifying appearance for this drill?
The ground had been entirely made to look like the Abandoned Zone. If one looked closely, mixed in the overturned soil were some white bones and animal carcasses—looking like simulated corpses.
Many disordered spiritual powers of various colors floated and mixed in the air, colliding with each other and emitting scorching heat.
“Little beauty, you’re quite punctual. Why aren’t you going in? Are you waiting specifically for me?”
Zhan Ye’s voice came from the watchtower. He was kneeling on one knee on the rusty railing, the sleeves of his combat uniform rolled up to his elbows, looking as reckless as ever.
“Or is it that the little beauty is scared?”
When Su Tang looked up, she saw him jump down.
From a three-meter-high watchtower, he landed with only a soft thud.
A Sentinel’s physique was truly terrifying.
He walked up to her in a few steps. The smell of smoke and alcohol on him was heavy, carrying a dangerous sense of aggression.
“Scared?”
Su Tang tugged at the hem of her cargo pants.
“I’ve seen scenes in the Abandoned Zone ten times more desolate than this.”
Zhan Ye raised an eyebrow, suddenly reaching out to pinch her chin, his thumb rubbing along her jawline.
“That’s great then.”
His fingertips had thin calluses, but his touch wasn’t heavy. The gaze looking down at her held no discomfort.
“However, you might be a little unaccustomed to the scene today. Remember to stay by my side later.”
“Shen Ji, that guy, hasn’t reached a stable value for his spiritual power yet, so he won’t command personally today. That bunch of trash from the Second Squad will probably be hard to control today. Little beauty, you absolutely must not run around later. If you get hurt, my heart will ache.”
Zhan Ye let go of his hand, and a silver badge was stuffed into her palm. It was engraved with the Third Squad’s Golden Eagle emblem, and the tip of the claw was stained with a bit of dried dark red, looking like bloodstains.
“Wear this, otherwise those crazy pups won’t know who you are.”
“Got it.”
Su Tang pinned the badge to her chest. Just as she wanted to ask Zhan Ye about the drill start time, a whistle suddenly pierced the morning mist, sharp like the wail of a spiritual entity.
Zhan Ye whistled, and the Golden Eagle swooped down fiercely from the mist, landing on Su Tang’s shoulder.
“Follow me.”
He grabbed her wrist and ran toward the central tower. Su Tang rejoiced that she had dressed conveniently enough today.
Although called a central tower, it was actually just modified from half a launch stand. The defense map jumping on the screen flickered on and off; the conditions were truly crude.
The Sentinels of the Third Squad leaned against the bunkers. Unlike the First Squad, who maintained a solemn standing posture at all times, these Sentinels of the Third Squad looked more like ruffians.
Several Third Squad Sentinels were surrounding an iron barrel roasting energy bars. Seeing Su Tang, they whistled.
“Captain, is this the treasure you were showing off to us?”
Their eyes were very frivolous. Su Tang frowned slightly, avoiding their gazes.
“Watch your mouths.”
Zhan Ye kicked that Sentinel, though without force.
“This is Guide Su. If you drop the ball today and make me lose face in front of Guide Su, see how I deal with you.”
He turned his head and winked at Su Tang, his roguishness carrying a hint of protectiveness.
“Ignore this bunch of rough men; they don’t know how to talk when they see a pretty girl.”
Su Tang pursed her lips and didn’t speak. Zhan Ye didn’t care that the girl ignored him and continued to introduce them to her.
“This is the Mad Dog Group, responsible for left-wing defense this time.”
Zhan Ye pointed to several Sentinels with skulls tattooed on their arms.
“Their spiritual entities are all carnivores. If they lose control, they’ll bite. Remember to avoid them later.”
As soon as his voice fell, the alarm on the left-wing defense line exploded.
Red dots on the screen surged like a tide. It seemed the Sentinels of the Second Squad had started attacking.
A Sentinel’s shout suddenly came from the communicator at the console.
Before Su Tang could stand firm, she was taken to the console by Zhan Ye.
“Little beauty, it’s your turn. Stabilize his spiritual power.”
“Put your spiritual power into this instrument; it will transmit it to where it needs to go.”
Su Tang nodded. Just as the spiritual power from her fingertips probed out, it was ruthlessly bounced back by a violent energy.
Su Tang looked up at the image sent back by the monitor.
A large, burly Sentinel looked as if he had taken a heavy hit, collapsed on the ground, smashing the ground ruthlessly. His eye sockets glared blood-red, looking as if he had held on to his limit.
“Use resonance.”
Zhan Ye’s reminder came from beside her ear.
Su Tang gritted her teeth and increased the output of her spiritual power.
Ngh. As expected, relying on her not-yet-fully-recovered spiritual power was still a bit strenuous.
Fine beads of sweat covered her forehead. Su Tang unconsciously let out a few soft sounds from her lips.
Zhan Ye’s voice suddenly sounded right next to her ear, carrying the unique scent of the man.
“Don’t fight it head-on. Follow his rhythm.”
His palm pressed against the back of her neck at some point. A warm sensation climbed up along her spine. Su Tang felt that her spiritual power, which had been thrown into disarray by that rioting Sentinel, was stabilizing bit by bit.
Su Tang took a deep breath and remobilized the spiritual power in her body.
Following Zhan Ye’s guidance, Su Tang navigated her spiritual power around the resistance area bit by bit, slowly penetrating inside.
Slowly, Su Tang felt the violent spiritual power over there calm down. Looking up at the tall Sentinel in the monitor who had already calmed down, she slowly breathed a sigh of relief and retracted her spiritual power.
“Th… Thank you, Miss Su.”
Words of thanks came from the communicator. Su Tang nodded faintly.
“So great, good girl.”
Zhan Ye’s hand hadn’t moved away yet. His thumb rubbed the soft flesh at the back of her neck, carrying a soothing implication.
“The effect was much faster than I thought.”
His fingertips had thin calluses, which felt very ticklish.
Su Tang jerked her head away to dodge, her ears flushed with heat: “Captain Zhan, please have some self-respect.”
“Blushing?”
He was too close. Su Tang could smell the alcohol on his sweat-dampened neck entangled with the faint smell of tobacco. It wasn’t unpleasant, but it inexplicably made one feel uncomfortable.
Just as she wanted to retreat, the console suddenly emitted a piercing alarm.
“Captain, those little cubs from the Second Squad suddenly attacked the right wing with great force. The right-wing defense line has collapsed.”
“They went too far and lost control, huh.”
Zhan Ye clicked his tongue, then suddenly grabbed Su Tang’s wrist and rushed out.
“Then I can only wrong the little beauty for a bit. Come play on the front lines with me.”
Wind whistled in her ears, accompanied by the sounds of Sentinel spiritual entities fighting from time to time.
Su Tang was dragged by him through chaotic war zones one after another.
Waves of spiritual power, scorching hot due to excessive exertion, rushed toward her face.
“Hold on tight!”
Zhan Ye suddenly bent down, picked her up horizontally, and leaped over a three-meter-high broken wall.
Caught off guard, Su Tang subconsciously wrapped her arms around his neck. Her nose bumped against his hard collarbone. Her nose soured, and Su Tang squeezed her eyes shut.
Damn it.
Why is Zhan Ye built so hard?
It hurt like hell.
“Put me down, I can walk myself.”
Passing by several fighting Sentinels, seeing them in this posture, a few bold ones even whistled at them. She felt uncomfortable and struggled to get down from Zhan Ye’s arms, but he held her tighter.
“Behave, don’t move.”
Zhan Ye’s voice carried a smile, but he didn’t look at her; his eyes stared dead ahead.
“There’s a simulated minefield ahead. If you fall, you’ll break your legs.”
He carried her, weaving through the complex terrain.
Su Tang’s cheek was pressed against his sweat-damp chest. She could clearly hear his steady heartbeat and also feel the spiritual power on him becoming violent bit by bit.
Be it Mo Xiao, Shen Ji, or him.
Having crawled their way from the battlefield to the position of Sentinel Captain, their spiritual barriers were more fragile than any other Sentinel’s, and they were also more easily infected.
Suddenly, Zhan Ye’s footsteps paused.
What Su Tang felt first was the spiritual power on Zhan Ye; it suddenly became sharp, as if entering combat mode.
Turning her head, she saw a Second Squad Sentinel ahead release his spiritual entity—a big black bear fully 3 meters tall.
“F*ck!”
Zhan Ye cursed under his breath and suddenly shielded Su Tang behind him.
Then, his Golden Eagle suddenly enlarged in size and swooped straight down from high altitude, the fluctuation of spiritual power lifting the surrounding turf.
Su Tang felt unsteady on her feet and couldn’t help but grip the hem of Zhan Ye’s clothes in front of her.
“Stand here and don’t move.”
Zhan Ye turned and said a sentence to her. Su Tang was just a Guide; leaving her here, no Sentinel would be willing to lay a hand on a Guide.
Zhan Ye strode forward to attack that Sentinel. Unexpectedly, just then, that big black bear suddenly changed direction and actually pounced straight at Su Tang.
“Careful.”
Zhan Ye’s pupils contracted abruptly. It was too late to turn back.
Su Tang subconsciously raised her hand, her spiritual power exploding out without reservation.
Unfortunately, it was still too weak, not to mention that a Guide’s spiritual power didn’t possess offensive capabilities to begin with.
After temporarily stabilizing the black bear, for some reason, spiritual power 100 times more violent than before erupted from the bear. Su Tang’s spiritual power instantly collapsed.
A splitting pain came from her temples.
“Su Tang!”
Zhan Ye rushed back quickly, catching Su Tang just as she fell backward.
The girl’s forehead pressed against his collarbone, her warm breath spraying on his sweaty skin.
“F*ck, if that guy Shen Ji didn’t discipline you properly, then I will.”
The spiritual power around Zhan Ye suddenly exploded. Linked to it, the surrounding fighting Sentinels were all affected; for a moment, they began to cover their heads in pain.
Su Tang couldn’t help but groan softly. Seeming to think their shouting around her was too noisy, she turned her head and buried it in the crook of Zhan Ye’s neck.
As their skin touched, the spiritual power on Zhan Ye began to wrap around Su Tang uncontrollably. Then, he was surprised to discover that his originally violent spiritual power was actually stabilizing bit by bit.
Su Tang’s spiritual power was seeping into his body, thread by thread, along where their skin touched.
Resonance?
As the spiritual power on his body gradually stabilized, Zhan Ye’s hand gripping the military knife slowly loosened.
He looked down at the pale-faced girl in his arms. Her eyelashes were trembling, and she had collapsed weakly into his embrace.
She’s already this fragile, yet she’s still thinking of soothing me?
“Damn it…”
He cursed low, but his tone was unbelievably soft.
“Who are you trying to impress by acting tough?”
He carefully picked her up horizontally, turned around, and shouted to the Third Squad Sentinels who were recovering and gradually gathering toward this side.
“What are you still standing there for? Beat that bunch of classless trash from the Second Squad to death for me.”
Su Tang in his arms seemed to move. Her eyelashes brushed past his neck, bringing a ticklish shudder.
When Zhan Ye looked down, he happened to see the points jumping on her wristband.
Exactly 3500 more than the 5000 he promised.
“Silly fool.”
He said in a voice only the two of them could hear.
The Golden Eagle circled above his head, its wings blocking the dazzling sunlight.
