Chapter 49: Are We Really Having an Affair?
The hospital room was silent.
Wen Yan jerked his head up; Mother Wen’s expression changed as well.
Father Wen had guessed three reasons, and each one hit part of the truth. Wen Yan’s heart beat rapidly.
Wen Yan: “No…”
Father Wen: “Then what is it? Yan-yan, look at me…”
Mother Wen: “Stop!”
Father Wen wanted to ask more, but Mother Wen cut him off.
She pulled Wen Yan close, gently patting his back. “Old Wen! Can’t you see Yan-yan is heartbroken over the breakup? Do you have to ask now?”
Father Wen stopped talking.
Fortunately, neither of them probed further.
The three of them chatted briefly for a while longer.
Regarding the lack of contact recently, Wen Yan could only explain dryly that things were too busy at the company, requiring dedication to new product development.
Mother Wen: “Is Xiao Pei your colleague? Didn’t he say he just returned to the country?”
“Mn.” Wen Yan gave a vague acknowledgment.
It would be even stranger if he said “Boss.” Which boss comes back with an intern? Moreover, if he mentioned “Boss,” Pei Zhouye’s identity would certainly arouse more suspicion.
“Keep your distance from him,” Father Wen said with a frown. “I don’t have a good feeling about him.”
Mother Wen: “You said the same thing about Gu Yulan back then, and didn’t they get along fine later? Why are you interfering with Yan-yan’s friends?”
Father Wen didn’t speak.
Initially, he hadn’t had a good feeling about Gu Yulan either, but that was nothing compared to seeing Pei Zhouye now.
It was a man’s intuition; he felt this was another pig trying to root up his family’s precious cabbage. The difference was that Wen Yan’s reaction to Pei Zhouye was much stronger than his reaction to Gu Yulan before, and the aggression radiating from Pei Zhouye was far more intense.
That oppression of someone long accustomed to high status—he had seen it when negotiating with major clients in the past. It was the confidence and audacity supported only by ruthless methods and a powerful background.
If someone like that wanted to bully Wen Yan, Wen Yan might not even have the ability to resist.
“Mom, Dad, our team recently participated in the R&D for the ‘Morning Star’ Robot 3.0, the one reported on TV before…”
Wen Yan didn’t respond to the warning, stiffly changing the subject.
His relationship with Pei Zhouye wasn’t something he could break just because he wanted to.
When it was time to part, Mother Wen held Wen Yan’s hand again, her eyes full of reluctance.
“Next time you come home, it will be winter break. If you encounter any unhappy things at school or work, remember to tell us. No matter how busy you are, eat and sleep well. Look at how much weight you’ve lost.”
After Mother Wen finished, Father Wen finally spoke:
“Stay away from that man just now. If you have any difficulties, don’t keep them to yourself. Tell your mother and me.”
Wen Yan agreed to everything.
It was time for Father Wen’s routine checkup.
Mother Wen could only walk Wen Yan to the elevator. “Remember to send a message when you get to school.”
Wen Yan suddenly thought of something and held Mother Wen’s hand. “Mom, do you know Yu Qiu?”
That name seemed to be on the psychiatric hospital’s registry.
Mother Wen’s expression shifted. “Heard of her, don’t know her. Hurry back now.”
The elevator arrived at the first floor, and the doors opened.
Pei Zhouye stood idly at the elevator entrance. “Let’s go.”
Wen Yan deliberately stood a little further away from him, stating firmly, “You really are good at lying.”
“Which part was a lie?” Pei Zhouye’s tone lifted at the end, his expression seemingly dissatisfied with Wen Yan’s verdict.
Wen Yan had just come out of the ward, his chest still heavy with sadness, and couldn’t be bothered to deal with him.
Pei Zhouye said, “A boyfriend is also a friend. That doesn’t count as lying, right?”
Wen Yan ignored him and walked on his own.
The car drove smoothly, scenery flashing past the window.
Wen Yan watched his familiar city retreating rapidly outside. He didn’t ask about the destination; he didn’t have the right to decide anyway.
Pei Zhouye wasn’t in high spirits either, turning his head to look out the window.
He suddenly spoke: “I liked you back when you were in high school.”
Wen Yan looked at the increasingly familiar surroundings and just felt baffled.
“Did you go to high school in Nan City?”
Pei Zhouye answered honestly, “No.”
The thought of attending the same high school as Wen Yan had crossed his mind, but he had to spend a great deal of time monitoring Wen Yan’s every move. a normal class schedule would have wasted his time, so he completed all his coursework online.
Naturally, he couldn’t tell Wen Yan that.
Wen Yan twitched the corner of his mouth, somewhat speechless. “Then what nonsense are you talking about?”
Pei Zhouye didn’t explain, a slight smile curving his lips.
The car stopped near Nan City No. 2 Middle School.
Wen Yan hesitated, not wanting to get out.
“What if we’re seen by people I know?” He clenched his fists, knuckles turning white.
Pei Zhouye’s eyes darkened. Seeing the conflicted look on that beautiful face, he asked in a deep voice, “Wen Yan, are we really having an affair?”
He had endured until Wen Yan broke up with Gu Yulan before getting together with him. They were dating properly; what was there that couldn’t be shown to others?
Wen Yan seemed to suddenly understand something, nodded, and got out of the car.
“True. If we meet anyone, I’ll just say what I said earlier—you’re my friend.”
Pei Zhouye’s temples throbbed violently.
Did Wen Yan really think that, or was he deliberately trying to piss him off?
The two wandered around the perimeter for a long time.
Wen Yan gave brief introductions, but Pei Zhouye seemed even more familiar with the place than he was, responding enthusiastically. Wen Yan almost thought he was some kind of gold-medal tour guide.
When they reached the school gate, the security guard wouldn’t let them in.
“It’s the National Day holiday now, there’s no one in the school. Besides, usually, alumni need to call their former homeroom teacher to prove they were students here before entering.”
Wen Yan felt relieved and turned to look at Pei Zhouye, implying he really had no way to get in.
Pei Zhouye stared at Wen Yan’s smug little expression and licked his lips.
Wen Yan had no idea how seductive that innocent look of his was.
Pei Zhouye forcibly pulled himself back to reality and looked at the guard. “As long as we prove we were students of the school, we can enter, right?”
The guard nodded, confused.
Pei Zhouye’s peach blossom eyes curved. Wen Yan felt a chill run down his spine, wondering what kind of bad water was sloshing around in his stomach now.
He walked to the honor wall nearby and pointed to a certain ID photo on it.
“Wen Yan, A University. Uncle, look at this photo—doesn’t it look like him? Can you let us in now?”
Wen Yan’s eyes went wide. He stood awkwardly in place, letting the guard scrutinize his face.
The guard compared them for a few seconds and opened the gate.
After all, Wen Yan’s face was simply too easy to recognize.
He walked quickly through the school gate and looked back. Pei Zhouye was being stopped by the guard, presumably making a call.
Soon, Pei Zhouye was also let in.
Wen Yan watched his expression—casual as if entering his own home—and felt even angrier, burying his head and walking forward.
Pei Zhouye indeed had a way to get in, but he had to choose the one that embarrassed him! He didn’t know why Pei Zhouye insisted on coming in anyway! To relive campus memories? But this wasn’t even his school.
Wen Yan couldn’t figure it out, so he quickened his pace, wishing he could put a few hundred meters between himself and the person behind him.
Pei Zhouye looked at Wen Yan’s back and the familiar campus.
He used to follow behind Wen Yan from this very perspective, enduring Wen Yan’s intimacy with the people around him.
