Chapter 124
Shen Shuyu opened his eyes, only to find himself in pitch darkness, unable to see anything.
What happened?
Didn’t I faint?
Could it be… I died again?
They say when people die, their life flashes before their eyes. This didn’t look like a flashback moment.
Suddenly, a light appeared ahead. The light spread out, falling on Shen Shuyu. Looking at it, the light paved a path for him, guiding him forward.
His body moved uncontrollably, like a marionette, walking stiffly step by step toward the source of the light.
Shen Shuyu stepped into the source of the light. Before his eyes could process the visual information, a loud boom exploded in his ears.
He closed his eyes instinctively, his whole body trembling. After a long while, he slowly opened them again. What met his eyes was a field of ruins.
More accurately, a fierce battle had just ended here. Parts chopped off from mechas were scattered on the sand. There was no wind, but dust permeated the air.
Shen Shuyu covered his mouth and nose, frowning as he looked around.
Where on earth is this?
What is this situation?
A multitude of questions spun in Shen Shuyu’s mind, but no one could give him answers.
Stepping on the sand, he felt weightless.
Although there was light here, it was dim, only enough to barely make out the surroundings. Shen Shuyu looked up at the sky. Dark clouds pressed down, blocking all light.
This place was filled with oppression and unease.
Shen Shuyu suddenly remembered the illusion he entered when walking out of the final desert map in the Survival War. He didn’t feel much then, but seeing these ruins now, he inexplicably made a connection.
What happened?
The ending of the original novel was clearly peaceful and happy; scenes like this never appeared.
Shen Shuyu walked for an unknown amount of time until he saw a person lying in a pile of shattered mecha parts. The person was a bloody mess, face unrecognizable, but he inexplicably felt he knew this person.
Approaching cautiously, he got closer and finally saw the person’s outline clearly.
It was actually Lin Xuyi!
Shen Shuyu’s eyes widened. He hurriedly squatted down, wanting to check Lin Xuyi’s condition, but his hand passed straight through Lin Xuyi’s body.
What… is going on?
Shen Shuyu looked down at his hand. It looked solid, yet he couldn’t touch Lin Xuyi. Unwilling to give up, he reached out to pat Lin Xuyi’s shoulder, again passing through his body.
Lin Xuyi just lay quietly on the ground… waiting to die.
Shen Shuyu thought he didn’t have much affection for paper people, but seeing someone he knew lying injured on the ground, he couldn’t help feeling sad.
A wave of sorrow suddenly surged in his heart, helplessness sweeping over him. What exactly happened?
Shen Shuyu looked at the weak rise and fall of Lin Xuyi’s chest. There must be others here besides him!
He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. He glanced at Lin Xuyi once more, then stood up and walked toward the traces of fighting.
This walk was terrifying; signs of devastation were everywhere. He walked for an unknown time until he finally saw someone else.
A young man in armor stood on a mecha. With a gun on his shoulder, he struggled to fire a machine gun into the distance, finally losing strength and collapsing directly onto the mecha.
Shen Shuyu stood rooted to the spot, feet as if glued, unable to move. Because he saw that the person collapsing on the mecha was himself.
Although the face was the same, Shen Shuyu was very certain—it wasn’t Shen Shuyu (the original host), it was him.
He watched himself lie on the mecha for a while, then shakily climb up again, pick up the gun, and slowly walk off the mecha.
The ground began to vibrate again, shaking Shen Shuyu back to his senses. Pursing his lips, he walked over. Instinct told him he had to follow this ‘Shen Shuyu’.
‘Shen Shuyu’ seemed to have reached his limit. After getting off the mecha, he almost slumped to the ground again. Fortunately, he propped himself up with the gun to avoid falling.
He fished a nutrient solution from his pocket, tore open the package, but only took a small sip before carefully putting it away.
Shen Shuyu pursed his lips, waiting patiently.
He watched ‘Shen Shuyu’ find a handy wooden stick and, leaning on it, walk away from the mecha step by step.
He was heavily injured, his steps slow, but he dared not stop for a moment.
The unease in Shen Shuyu’s heart grew, a panic he couldn’t put into words. Clearly, ‘Shen Shuyu’ felt it too.
He tried hard to speed up, but at a corner, he saw Shen Xili.
Shen Xili was also wearing armor. His injuries seemed even more severe than ‘Shen Shuyu’s’. At this moment, he was curled up on the ground in agony, emitting low growls of pain.
‘Shen Shuyu’ stopped and hid to the side. Shen Shuyu didn’t understand. Looking at Shen Xili’s painful state, he pursed his lips and walked over himself. Only after getting close did he realize what was wrong with Shen Xili.
Although he looked more injured than ‘Shen Shuyu’, his pain didn’t seem to come from his wounds. Instead, he kept clutching his heart, as if something was inside.
Shen Shuyu couldn’t touch him to check. He glanced at ‘Shen Shuyu’ hiding in the distance. He wasn’t hiding anymore, but walking out slowly. He walked to Shen Xili’s side, seemingly unsurprised by his state.
Shen Shuyu saw him mouth something, but couldn’t hear a thing. He wanted to get closer to listen, but saw ‘Shen Shuyu’ pour the nutrient solution he had guarded all the way into Shen Xili’s mouth.
After feeding him, Shen Xili looked less in pain, seemingly settling down a bit.
‘Shen Shuyu’, ignoring his own injuries, sat on the ground and skillfully undid Shen Xili’s armor. Beneath it, he wore only a white T-shirt, now dyed red with blood.
‘Shen Shuyu’ produced a small knife from somewhere and rolled up Shen Xili’s clothes, exposing his chest.
His body was scarred, but Shen Shuyu couldn’t focus on that. He clearly saw countless knife scars, vertical and horizontal, old and new, on Shen Xili’s chest.
And under those scars, something was wriggling.
Shen Shuyu’s eyelid twitched as he watched ‘Shen Shuyu’ carefully cut open the skin of his chest with the knife. At that moment, Shen Shuyu finally saw clearly what was under the skin.
It was a worm.
A black worm swimming in his flesh. The trail it left was darker than the surrounding color.
‘Shen Shuyu’ clearly saw it too. He stabbed the black worm swiftly and accurately with the knife tip. But the black worm was cunning; when stabbed, it broke directly, leaving a tiny black dot that drilled into the flesh, disappearing from sight.
Shen Shuyu rubbed his eyes. Why is this worm so strange?
Unable to help himself, he leaned down to look closer. Suddenly, Shen Xili’s flesh turned into a gaping hole, and a huge black worm leaped out from it, straight at Shen Shuyu’s face!
“No!”
Shen Shuyu opened his eyes and sat up abruptly, gasping for breath. Sweat from his forehead dripped down his face onto the pristine white quilt.
Shen Shuyu shook his head. ears ringing, brain not yet fully clear.
“Baby!”
Hearing someone speaking, he instinctively turned his head toward the sound and saw an elegantly dressed woman sitting by the bed, tears on her face.
“Little Yu! Where does it hurt?”
“Call the doctor! Quick!”
Several voices rang in his ears at once. Shen Shuyu felt dizzy, but the ringing in his ears was consistently improving.
He felt his hand being held. Looking again, it was still that woman. She was crying heartbreakingly, looking at Shen Shuyu’s face. “Baby, you scared Mom to death.”
Mom?
Shen Shuyu realized.
He could no longer distinguish between dream and reality.
