Chapter 69: Can’t Meet for Three Days Before the Wedding? That’s… Really a Good Custom
Quiet… was impossible.
After returning to the room, Le Can buried himself back into the soft quilt. Before he could play ostrich for long, a knock sounded suddenly by his ear.
The rhythm was moderate, not rushed, knocking once every two or three seconds. The knocking sound wasn’t loud or soft, but clear enough.
This knocking sounded a total of three times. Le Can, who initially thought he was hallucinating, slowly poked his head out of the quilt after hearing it clearly.
“Who?”
Waiting for three seconds without a reply, the knock sounded again. Le Can realized perhaps the room’s soundproofing was too good, and the other party might not have heard.
So, he tidied the clothes on his body, stepped into his slippers, and walked to the door.
Xie Jun and Yuan Cheng wouldn’t arrive that fast, that guy Xi Yun hadn’t been seen since morning, and Liang Yusheng changed the subject wishing he could walk around him—most likely it wasn’t any of these three parties.
Then who else would come looking for him?
However, the castle room being soundproof was a good thing for Le Can… he really didn’t want to embarrass himself again in such a short time.
Because he had already lost enough face. Fake smile.JPG
The door opened a crack, and Le Can looked out from the gap. Before he could open the door wider, a strange male voice suddenly came from outside.
“Good afternoon, Mr. Le. I am the castle’s butler, Ben Nelson. You may call me Ben.”
“Knowing you have awakened, Mr. Xi instructed me to bring you some of the castle’s special delicacies. I wonder if it is convenient for you now?”
A pure foreign name but speaking fluent Mandarin, the legendary identity of a butler, and finally, the castle delicacies mentioned by Ben.
Hearing Xi Yun’s name, Le Can didn’t even have time to be angry.
He admitted, he shamefully was tempted.
Curiosity was one aspect. As for physical strength—from being exhausted last night, shutting down due to low battery, to barely recovering a bit only to be tossed around this morning…
Without the reminder it was fine, but once eating was mentioned, Le Can’s stomach, long accustomed to having breakfast, began to revolt, protesting its owner’s abuse.
So, Le Can opened the door and took a step back: “Convenient. You… uh, you guys bring the things in, sorry for the trouble.”
He saw an elegant Western gentleman wearing a dark tailcoat, white shirt, and white gloves, bowing slightly with one hand in front and one behind.
“You are welcome; it is my honor to serve you.”
And behind Ben Nelson, two rows of other housekeeping staff wearing matching uniforms and holding silver trays stood left and right, also bowing in unison respectfully:
“It is our honor to serve you.”
Le Can, who had never seen such a spectacle, felt his body shake.
Le Can admitted he often secretly mocked Xi Yun as a capitalist before. But the capitalist there was more of a joking term, yet he didn’t expect, didn’t expect…
You, with your thick eyebrows and big eyes, actually betrayed the working class.
Amidst Le Can’s heartbroken silence, Ben Nelson led the people behind him filing in, orderly delivering the food into the room.
Although called a bedroom, how could a bedroom in a sprawling, domineering private castle just have a bed like those in high-rise buildings?
For example, the room Le Can was in now had, besides the bed, half the space occupied by resting sofas, low tables, cabinets, and on the other end, a long table and long chairs.
To be honest, the space here was so large that if he wanted to ride his electric scooter inside, it wouldn’t be impossible…
Le Can’s dining spot was at that long table.
He sat at the head of the table, looking at the neatly arranged array of exotic delicacies on the surface. After sweeping a glance at the number of dishes, he felt a bit numb.
A full twelve courses.
Fortunately, Xi Yun probably gave special instructions; the portion of each dish was strictly controlled to Michelin restaurant sizes, so waste shouldn’t happen.
This made Le Can quietly heave a sigh of relief.
If Xi Yun were truly like a fatuous ruler serving him twelve dishes he couldn’t finish, even if they tasted delicious and amazing, Le Can wouldn’t be happy.
People who had been poor could least tolerate wasting food.
Ben Nelson reached out to arrange the cutlery, gently asking the youth who sat with proper posture appearing slightly reserved, “Does Mr. Le need anything to drink?”
Le Can saw the chopsticks closest to his hand and froze.
He looked up and saw the people who had placed the dishes step back, while another group behind them stepped forward holding various beverages.
Le Can, inexplicably experiencing a “concubine selection”: “…”
Ben Nelson: “On your left hand side, from near to far, are white wine, champagne, sparkling water, and soda water.”
“Of course, I don’t recommend the last one, but if you wish to drink it, sir, please consume moderately—beer.”
Seafood with beer, obtaining the gout combo?
Le Can’s eye twitched slightly: “No, thanks.”
Le Can wasn’t fond of drinking, or rather, the drinking culture in his former workplace made him despise all alcohol.
He asked hesitantly: “Is the first one on the right Cola?”
The dark brown beverage in the goblet, he knew at a glance, was the old acquaintance that could be sold to him for eighty-eight a glass if the packaging was changed. Or rather, the beverage assassin!
Ben Nelson nodded elegantly: “I thought the beverages on the right might suit your taste better.”
“They are, in order: Cola, Sprite, lemonade, clear tea, and plain water.”
Hearing this, Le Can nodded lightly. Sure enough, he still preferred these common drinks on the right. With so many choices in front of him, of course he would…
“Please leave me a glass of each on the right side, thanks.”
“Oh right, if possible, please add ice to the Cola and Sprite.”
Ben Nelson smiled: “Of course, my respected owner.”
The staff holding the drinks moved at the command. The capable, rigorous, and very thoughtful butler waved everyone else away after everything was arranged.
The housekeeping staff, realigning into two neat rows, bowed slightly to Le Can at the head seat, then left the room in an orderly manner just as they had arrived.
Ben Nelson noticed Le Can’s discomfort and switched his blurted-out title back.
“I won’t disturb Mr. Le’s meal.”
“If you have other orders, you only need to use this device to call Ben with one key. Service is available twenty-four hours a day.”
With fewer strangers in the room, Le Can felt much more at ease.
He reached out to take the black device similar to a walkie-talkie, pondered for a moment, then looked up at this gentleman whose temples were gray but who remained elegant and dignified.
“Thank you, Ben. But if you have time, perhaps I could ask some questions? Regarding… Xi Yun.”
Ben Nelson raised his eyebrows slightly, smiling: “Of course, it is my honor to help clarify your doubts.”
Receiving an affirmative answer, Le Can’s spirit lifted.
He pointed to the seat beside him, signaling this old gentleman to sit down and chat. Knowing that someone raised with “respect the old and cherish the young” values felt truly restless being served by an elder.
Ben Nelson chuckled lightly, shaking his head to decline Le Can’s kindness.
He reached out and passed a plate of beautifully arranged shrimp to Le Can. “This is Garlic Olive Oil Shrimp. Hearing Ms. Liang’s introduction, you should like this cooking style.”
The shelled shrimp in the small red clay bowl were pink and inviting in color. Accompanied by green parsley flakes, the presentation was excellent.
Coupled with the rich aroma of garlic and oil filling his nose, Le Can, who super loved garlic crayfish, subconsciously swallowed.
Ben Nelson took the opportunity to use serving chopsticks to pick up a plump shrimp and place it in the bowl in front of Le Can. “This dish is best eaten hot.”
Le Can, with an empty stomach, was persuaded to start eating like this.
After finishing one Garlic Olive Oil Shrimp, Le Can, whose appetite was opened by the amazing taste, silently accepted a small bowl of Pineapple Seafood Fried Rice handed over by the butler.
“Ben, you know Aunt Liang?”
Ben Nelson considerately placed a glass of warm water by the youth’s hand.
“Yes, Mr. Le.”
“After knowing you would come here, I specially called Ms. Liang to consult her about your preferences and taboos in diet.”
This wasn’t something that couldn’t be said.
Ben Nelson, with silver frost at his temples, watched the young man in front of him with loving eyes, narrating the origin between him and Xi Yun.
“Originally, I served the previous owner of this castle, helping him look after this island. Later, this private island changed hands, and Mr. Xi’s maternal grandfather became my new master.”
“Speaking of which, I was honored to witness Miss Nian’s birth. Mr. Xi also lived in the castle for a period when he was small.”
But later, after Miss Nian and Old Mr. Xi passed away successively, and the castle owner became Xi Yun, Ben Nelson didn’t continue speaking about that.
The Nian family, Xi Yun’s maternal family.
The male lead breaking away from the Xi family was naturally because there was nothing he cherished in that home. Having briefly heard Xie Jun and Yuan Cheng talk about the Xi family, especially the Xi family now managed by the scumbag father Xi Chong, Le Can felt Xi Yun did right to leave!
But regarding Xi Yun’s mother’s side, Le Can only had the impression that they were rich and treated Xi Yun very well.
The youth with peach-blossom eyes smiled: “Then I really asked the right person.”
Ben Nelson was also a smart person; he naturally heard what aspect the questions Le Can wanted to ask were about.
He continued serving food to Le Can without stopping, his attitude natural as he said, “Whatever you want to ask, as long as I know, I can tell you.”
Le Can’s chewing motion slowed.
After swallowing the food in his mouth, he probed tentatively, “Even involving Xi Yun’s privacy, can you just tell me casually?”
Knowing that foreigners focused most on privacy protection, especially since Ben Nelson’s job was the sensitive profession of a private butler.
Ben Nelson chuckled lightly, blinking elegantly at Le Can: “Of course, initially it wasn’t allowed.”
Le Can’s mind moved, “Is it… Xi Yun?”
Ben Nelson took off the white gloves in his hands, dealing with a plump crab. “Yes, before coming, Mr. Xi instructed that anything can be told to you.”
This was the real reason why Ben Nelson knew everything and said everything.
Le Can was dumbfounded.
He was silent for a while, then slowly spoke: “Xi Yun, where is he?”
Ben Nelson wiped his hands and placed a small saucer of dismantled crab meat and roe by Le Can’s hand for the youth to take at will.
“Mr. Xi said that there is a custom in the East that one cannot meet for three days before the wedding, so for the next three days, he might not be able to meet with you.”
Le Can’s fist clenched instantly.
What being thoughtful, what not hiding anything—all smashed to smithereens.
He took a deep breath and slowly raised a standard smile: “Is that so?”
“That is… really a good custom.”
