Chapter 15: When Did You Become So Useless?
Liang Sheng had just opened the back door, but Mother Su beat him to it and got in first, followed by Su Rao.
He looked at the cramped space that no longer had room for him. Even though he vehemently didn’t want to talk to the Su family, he suppressed his emotions and asked: “Could you move in a little?”
Su Rao glanced at him. Remembering his pitiful state in the store while being verbally humiliated by her mother, she felt a pang of sympathy. Just as she was about to move inward, Mother Su raised a hand to stop her: “There’s no more room in the car. Are you trying to crush me to death?”
“Mom… he is the Young Madam, after all.”
Su Rao’s reminder made Mother Su even more furious. She pointed at Liang Sheng’s nose and scolded: “What Young Madam! Just looking at him is bad luck! Couldn’t you see that President Shen didn’t even want to pay attention to him!”
Su Rao immediately shut her mouth. From childhood to adulthood, she was most afraid of her mother, who was ruthless and heavily favored sons over daughters.
Mother Su snorted triumphantly, then firmly slammed the car door shut and rolled up the window.
Liang Sheng panicked and hit the car window hard, but it was useless. He could only run to the driver’s side and plead with Shen Xingyu: “A-Yu, you can’t leave me here alone! I don’t know the way!”
“Then take a taxi back yourself.”
Shen Xingyu turned his head to glance at him. His eyebrows raised slightly, and his eyes were filled with indifference.
After speaking, he slowly rolled up the window.
The tinted glass cut off the man’s cold profile.
His words struck like a thunderbolt from a clear sky. Liang Sheng was instantly frozen on the spot, lacking even the strength to continue hitting the window.
What did Shen Xingyu just say?
Told him to take a taxi back by himself?
Could the other party have forgotten that he was penniless? Where would he get the money for a taxi…
Besides, it was already past midnight. How could Shen Xingyu bear it? Bear to let him take a car alone…
The car sped away, leaving him nothing but exhaust fumes.
The last, faint sliver of hope hanging on shattered completely with the man’s departure. Liang Sheng stared desolately at the body of Shen Xingyu’s receding car, remaining motionless for a long time.
The neon lights of the city reflected in his teary eyes like a boundless darkness.
The night sky hung low, and a continuous drizzle fell once again.
Under the dim yellow streetlights, a slender figure stumbled along.
He was like a walking corpse, wandering blankly alone by the roadside, purposeless, not knowing where to go, only feeling so tired… so tired…
…
The Shen Residence.
Shen Xingyu sat on the sofa with his legs crossed, holding a stack of newspapers, but he was in no mood to read.
He couldn’t help but recall Liang Sheng’s silently weeping eyes when the car window closed, like a shattered sunset.
It was a pity that those eyes were no longer as bright and clear as they were back then; they always revealed an annoying melancholy.
He wondered if that idiot had managed to get a taxi…
He subconsciously checked his watch again. One in the morning.
Two hours had already passed since they returned.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the rain fell like a veil, leaving the tall buildings in a haze.
Shen Xingyu flipped through the daily paper restlessly.
Heartlessly leaving Liang Sheng behind was nothing more than to verify whether the other party would leave him and go look for someone else.
It had been so long, and there was still no sign of Liang Sheng returning. Could it be he really had a change of heart?!
The more he thought about it, the more restless he became.
The coffee on the table had already gone cold, too bitter to swallow.
Several times he wanted to get up and go out to look for him, but the unyielding pride in his bones and his inner lack of security kept him suppressing his temper, sitting there waiting.
He really wanted to know whether Liang Sheng would return or not, whether he would betray him a second time.
Upstairs, Su Nian watched the man who had been sitting silently on the sofa ever since they got back, his mood souring.
Could he be missing that bitch Liang Sheng?
Holding onto the handrail, he slowly walked downstairs, approached the man with a bright smile, and asked with gentle concern:
“President Shen, what are you doing? It’s getting late, hurry and rest! You have to work tomorrow!”
Shen Xingyu took a deep breath and exhaled heavily.
He put down the newspaper, rubbed his tired eyes, and dismissed him without looking up: “You go to sleep first. I’m not tired.”
“How could you not be tired? President Shen had several meetings today, and you accompanied me shopping tonight. What if you exhaust yourself? I’ll feel heartache for you.”
Su Nian spoke sweetly and naturally sat down beside the man. His hands rested on Shen Xingyu’s shoulders as he considerately massaged him.
Shen Xingyu frowned, ignoring his attempts to please, and said coldly: “I’m fine.”
Su Nian pursed his lips, resentment flashing in his eyes. Gazing at him pitifully and banking on Shen Xingyu’s doting, he suddenly grew bold and pressed his chest against the man’s arm.
He was wearing a loose-fitting pajama shirt, the top two buttons unfastened, revealing faint glimpses of his collarbones.
Turning his head, Shen Xingyu met Su Nian’s seductive gaze.
Those wet eyes were like a fawn’s, delicate and moving, something any man would find hard to resist.
It was just a pity that toward anyone else, he was clear-hearted and free of desires, completely lacking any thoughts. He even found Su Nian’s behavior exceptionally vulgar. He said coldly: “Don’t look at me with that kind of gaze.”
Caught in the heat of the moment, Su Nian completely missed the disgust in the man’s eyes. He thought the other party was playing hard to get. Usually, he waited for Shen Xingyu to approach him, but having drunk a bit of wine earlier, he unscrupulously wrapped his arms around the man’s neck, taking the initiative to press close and seduce him:
“President Shen~ Mmm~ Let’s go back to the room~”
Shen Xingyu hadn’t expected him to become so bold. Irritably massaging his temples, he growled: “Get off! Who gave you the nerve to climb onto me?!”
Su Nian shuddered in fright. Feeling deeply wronged, he scrambled off the man, his eyes brimming with tears:
“I’m sorry, President Shen! I drank too much!”
Shen Xingyu closed his eyes and said in disgust: “I don’t like smelling alcohol. Don’t drink anymore.”
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I was wrong! I’ll go brush my teeth right now! Please don’t be angry, President Shen!”
Su Nian apologized profusely, crying like a rain-battered pear blossom.
After speaking, he turned and ran out.
Shen Xingyu patted the wrinkles on his clothes, but he could still detect the faint smell of alcohol. He simply took off his jacket and tossed it aside.
At this moment, the main door suddenly emitted a heavy, low thud.
Outside, a blinding flash of lightning abruptly lit up the sky, immediately followed by a booming thunderclap. The dark figure at the door seemed to tremble, his face growing even paler.
Drenched from head to toe, he walked in shivering, leaving a long trail of water on the floor where he passed.
He wore no shoes, and his pale feet were densely covered in cuts and bloodstains.
Shen Xingyu furrowed his brows, choosing to ignore him.
Liang Sheng had no idea how he made it back. His entire being was in a daze, as if he were floating. As he reached the sofa, the man suddenly spoke up: “Come here.”
As calm as ever, completely detached from the situation.
Liang Sheng didn’t want to pay attention to him and took two more steps forward. The next second, his arm was grabbed by a powerful, large hand. He struggled a few times to no avail; his body was limp, his head heavy and feet light.
“I won’t say it a second time.”
Shen Xingyu’s tone was very light, yet it harbored an oppressive force.
Liang Sheng looked at him. He truly had no strength left to walk, allowing the man to pull him over to the sofa until he stood directly opposite him before Shen Xingyu finally let go.
For a moment, neither of them spoke first.
One stood shivering, the other sat in cold indifference.
Even though the person he had been anxiously waiting for had returned, Shen Xingyu stubbornly refused to lose face, remaining stoic.
There wasn’t a single word of concern, not even a tissue offered.
Liang Sheng had long stopped hoping his husband would do such things.
Clutching the hem of his clothes with both hands, he shivered and said with a trembling voice: “A-as you wished, I’m back…”
“En, go change your clothes.”
Shen Xingyu casually tossed him a clean set of pajamas.
Looking at the faintly fragrant clothes in his hands, Liang Sheng couldn’t help but laugh self-mockingly. A sorrowful laugh.
His husband was absolutely certain he would return.
Seeing him staring blankly at the pajamas, Shen Xingyu uncrossed his legs and finally deigned to look up at him: “Not changing? Want me to help you?”
Only then did Shen Xingyu notice Liang Sheng’s paper-pale face and the cuts and bruises covering his body. It was obvious he had fallen. Alongside his surprise, his heart inexplicably tightened.
He didn’t know his little wife had walked the entire way home. Still maintaining his lofty attitude, he mocked: “What? Took a taxi and beat yourself up into this ghostly state? When did you become so useless? To get drenched by the rain like this?”
Liang Sheng didn’t reply.
A suffocating silence filled the room.
Shen Xingyu wasn’t used to this kind of silence. Losing his mood for the hot tea he had brought to his lips, he slammed it heavily back onto the table, seemingly venting his displeasure at being ignored.
Then, he heard Liang Sheng’s very soft, yet very hoarse voice: “Shen, Xingyu…”
Married for seven years, it was the first time his wife had addressed him directly by his full name.
Shen Xingyu froze. Surprise, as well as anger, flashed in his eyes.
He looked at Liang Sheng, but the temper he wanted to unleash stopped at his lips when he stared straight into that tear-streaked face.
Liang Sheng took a deep breath to calm his emotions. Looking at the man through tear-blurred eyes, he asked softly: “If… I couldn’t make it back, and died outside, would you… feel even a little bit sad?”
Shen Xingyu hadn’t expected him to ask this and didn’t know how to answer for a moment. After a brief span of helplessness came disdain: “Hypocritical. Liang Sheng, don’t you find this question designed to garner sympathy incredibly cheap?”
It was like this again.
A distance of 5 kilometers, battling wind and rain, falling countless times along the way, only to have the man simply summarize it with the word “hypocritical”.
Liang Sheng suddenly regretted asking.
Why did he still refuse to give up and ask when he already knew the answer… only to plunge the knife even deeper into himself.
Even if Shen Xingyu had answered with “I wouldn’t be sad” instead of “hypocritical”, his heart wouldn’t hurt this much.
His wife’s dim, disappointed eyes, devoid of any trace of love, made Shen Xingyu agitated and his anger difficult to extinguish. He yanked him onto the sofa and kissed him without leaving any room for argument.
Overbearing and forceful.
Liang Sheng struggled, but was pinned down securely. He could only close his eyes helplessly as tears flowed from the corners of his eyes.
Countless times he had fantasized about embracing and kissing Shen Xingyu, tender and lingering, just like before.
But this time, his lover’s lips were so cold, so foreign…
He was stubborn down to his bones and never wanted to be forced, yet in the face of love, he had been tamed by Shen Xingyu time and time again into a submissive dog.
Su Nian, coming out after washing up, saw the scene on the sofa, and his smile instantly froze.
He couldn’t believe it. Jealousy grew wildly in the depths of his heart like toxic vines. His fingers clenched until they turned white, harboring resentment in the shadows.
No one is allowed to take Shen Xingyu’s love away from him!
