Chapter 16: You Only Ate a Little Spicy Food, and You’re Throwing Up Like This?
Yesterday’s severe physical and mental exhaustion caused Liang Sheng to sleep straight through until noon. Upon waking, his entire body ached. It took him a long while to climb out of bed, and then he limped downstairs.
Before he even reached the living room, he heard a burst of talking and laughing, sounding exceptionally grating.
He subconsciously glanced toward the dining table and saw the Shen siblings and Su Nian sitting together eating lunch. The atmosphere was so harmonious that they looked like a real family.
Seeing him come downstairs, Shen Xingyu merely shot him an indifferent glance and continued conversing with Su Nian, completely disregarding him. Su Nian, on the other hand, frequently served him food and added soup to his bowl.
Looking at the radiant happiness on their faces, Liang Sheng thought of the man’s forced kiss last night and suddenly felt a bit jealous, a bit distressed.
A scene like this hadn’t even appeared in his dreams for a long time.
Shen Xingyu, is it truly over between us?
Since you want to be with Su Nian, why did you kiss me…
Shen Xingyu loved acting so much. He hadn’t grown tired of acting for seven years, and even he had to play along.
He was so tired.
Liang Sheng swayed as he walked toward the door. As he passed the dining table, the man suddenly stopped him:
“Come here. Eat.”
Surprise flashed in his eyes, but they quickly dimmed again: “I have no appetite, I don’t want to eat…”
“Brother, why bother with him, smack smack… He can eat if he wants to!”
Shen Tingwan rolled her eyes, her words slurred with food stuffed in her mouth.
Su Nian didn’t mind at all. He stood up very generously and greeted him like a host: “Brother Liang Sheng, hurry and sit down to eat with us! I made a lot of dishes today!”
He familiarly grabbed a bowl and chopsticks. Liang Sheng suddenly felt that he was the outsider, completely out of place.
He didn’t want to watch the two of them show off their affection so stiflingly, so he refused coldly: “No need.”
“Nian-nian told you to come over, didn’t you hear?”
Shen Xingyu spoke up. Liang Sheng could hear the impatience in his voice, as well as an undeniable command.
For the sake of others, he always saved his worst attitude for him. He had to be like a dog and obey submissively.
While picking up food, Shen Tingwan mocked sarcastically: “This kind of person is just a dog that’s been fed until it’s familiar. It barks fiercely, and when others treat it well, it thinks it’s a tiger.”
Su Nian rejoiced internally, but on the surface, he still had to pretend to gently defend Liang Sheng: “Wan-wan, he is your sister-in-law after all, how can you… call him a dog?”
“I don’t have such a useless sister-in-law. The only sister-in-law in my heart is you, Brother Su Nian~”
When Shen Tingwan looked at Su Nian, her disdainful attitude vanished completely, and she smiled exceptionally sweetly.
“You have such a glib tongue~”
Su Nian patted her head, his gaze doting. Shen Tingwan’s approval was his greatest success.
“Sister-in-law~”
Shen Tingwan dragged out her syllables, acting spoiled.
“Oh my, stop messing around.”
Su Nian smiled reproachfully, then turned to look at the man who was cutting his steak. “President Shen, look at Wan-wan, just shouting nonsense. Brother Liang Sheng is still right here!”
“However she likes to call you, let her call you.”
Shen Xingyu brushed it off without even looking up. He casually cut off a piece of meat and put it in his mouth.
“Bleh bleh bleh~”
Shen Tingwan stuck her tongue out, taking Liang Sheng, who had caused her to be beaten, even less seriously.
Such a sister-in-law whom he had once treated wholeheartedly now humiliated him like this. Was it really worth it…
Liang Sheng suddenly asked himself.
He sat dejectedly in the corner of the dining table. Listening to their bantering was like knives stabbing into his heart.
He lowered his head and ate plain white rice.
For some reason, the rice was much harder to swallow than usual, and a bit salty. With his swallowing motions, a tear from his right eye also fell, splashing into the bowl.
Shen Xingyu inadvertently caught a glimpse and saw that his eyes were red, seeming to hold tears.
Was he crying?
Shen Xingyu frowned, the movement of his hands slowing down half a beat. But when he raised his eyes, he returned to his original indifference.
He continued eating, his gaze so calm it was as if nothing had happened, turning a blind eye even to Liang Sheng’s action of secretly wiping away tears.
Noticing that Liang Sheng was swallowing plain rice, Su Nian enthusiastically picked up a piece of Sichuan spicy diced chicken and placed it in his bowl: “Brother Liang Sheng, quickly try the spicy diced chicken I made! Both President Shen and Wan-wan love it!”
His show-off manner made Liang Sheng feel even more inferior.
Looking at the chili-covered piece of chicken in his bowl, Liang Sheng refused in a low voice: “I can’t eat spicy food.”
“Just try it! It’s not spicy. How will you know if you don’t eat it?”
Saying this, Su Nian gave him two more pieces.
“I already told you, I can’t eat spicy food…!”
Liang Sheng emphasized again, his voice rarely raising a few notches. This was the minuscule amount of anger he could muster after enduring to his absolute limit.
“I’m sorry! Brother Liang Sheng, I’ll take it away right now. Please don’t be angry! I didn’t mean any harm, I just thought it was delicious and wanted you to taste it…”
Su Nian spoke weakly, hurriedly getting up to take the chicken out of his bowl, but was stopped by Shen Xingyu.
“President Shen…”
Su Nian looked at him pitifully.
Shen Xingyu signaled him to sit down with his eyes, then said coldly to Liang Sheng: “It’s just a few pieces of chicken, it won’t kill you. Stop being hypocritical.”
“Hypocritical…”
Liang Sheng’s lips twitched. He took a deep breath, trying to calm his emotions, but that feeling of heartache only grew stronger.
Trembling, he held his chopsticks and ate that piece of chicken through his tears. The spicy flavor rapidly swept over his entire tongue.
The pain was intense, burning all the way down into his stomach.
Shen Xingyu never knew that whenever he ate spicy food, he would get a stomachache.
The Shen siblings couldn’t enjoy a meal without spice. Over the years, to cater to their tastes, he had specifically learned to cook all sorts of spicy dishes. He also wanted to integrate into this family, but after trying spicy food countless times, he still couldn’t stomach it. His three daily meals were so bland they couldn’t even compare to a vegetarian monk’s diet.
And now, his husband was forcing him, for the sake of someone else…
Liang Sheng chewed slowly, his cheeks flush red, tears and snot forced out by the spice, swallowing with difficulty.
The corners of Su Nian’s eyes lifted slightly, unable to hide his smugness.
Making this bitch eat the food he made with his own hands was letting him off too easy.
Seeing Liang Sheng practically dripping with snot and tears from the spice, Shen Tingwan excitedly grabbed Su Nian’s arm and laughed wildly: “Brother Su Nian, look at him! The way he looks from the spice is too funny, hahaha!”
Su Nian wanted to laugh along, but he still had to pretend to be kind: “Wan-wan, how can you laugh at Brother Liang Sheng?”
“But it really is too funny, hahaha!”
“Alright, if you want to laugh, go laugh outside.”
Shen Xingyu finally spoke up, getting a headache from the noise.
Only then did Shen Tingwan shut her mouth, feeling she hadn’t had enough.
As Liang Sheng swallowed the last piece of chicken, he suddenly felt his stomach churning violently.
The next second, he fiercely covered his mouth, his eyes going wide, and dashed madly toward the bathroom.
The sudden situation left the few people at the table bewildered.
Su Nian even sniffled aggrievedly: “Ah… Is the food I made really that awful?”
Shen Xingyu’s brows furrowed tightly. Having no mind to comfort his little secretary, he got up and followed him to the bathroom.
Shen Tingwan, however, quickly denied it: “Of course not! Brother Su Nian’s cooking is the most delicious. It’s just a case of wild boars not being able to eat fine bran!”
Su Nian turned and smiled at her, but absentmindedly thought about how tense Shen Xingyu had looked just now.
Was he worrying about Liang Sheng…
On the other side, Liang Sheng lay over the sink, vomiting until the sky spun and the earth went dark, ultimately only able to heave up a puddle of sour fluid.
With his hands in his pockets, Shen Xingyu leaned against the bathroom doorframe, quietly watching him vomit.
The sound of retching, one after another, made his heart uncomfortable, his brows never relaxing.
Wasn’t this an overreaction?
He only ate a little bit of spicy food, and he’s throwing up like this?
When did Liang Sheng’s body become so frail?
Last night he was still able to walk home from 5 kilometers away, perfectly fine! Now he eats a little spice and he can’t handle it?
After throwing up, Liang Sheng felt a bit better, but his entire body was limp and powerless. He could only support himself by pressing his shoulder against the wall, panting intermittently.
“Feeling better?”
The man’s voice sounded from outside the door.
Liang Sheng weakly turned his head. Just as he was surprised by the other’s concern, Shen Xingyu’s next sentence made his stomach ache even more:
“I told you you were being hypocritical, didn’t I? Why is it that Wan-wan and I ate it and were fine, but you threw up? Are you trying to frame Nian-nian for poisoning the food?”
Liang Sheng truly regretted thinking this man would actually care about him just a moment ago. Turns out he was just afraid he would frame his little lover.
He didn’t want to waste his breath on Shen Xingyu. He swayed as he walked out of the bathroom, but the man grabbed his arm:
“Answer.”
Shen Xingyu didn’t like seeing him ignore him.
But Liang Sheng refused to pay him any attention.
“Let go…”
“I won’t.”
Liang Sheng struggled a couple of times. Because he had vomited too violently, his entire body went completely limp against Shen Xingyu.
He weakly tried to stand firm, but couldn’t. The soles of his feet felt like they were stepping on cotton.
He couldn’t even speak anymore.
Shen Xingyu subconsciously tried to push him away, but was stunned when he saw that face, pale as paper.
His little wife leaned weakly against his chest, his dim, lifeless eyes half-closed. His forehead was covered in a fine sweat, a few strands of wet hair clung to his cheeks, and his eyelashes were tightly knit together in pain.
Why did he vomit so severely?
Seeing Liang Sheng looking as if he were about to die at any moment, Shen Xingyu finally panicked. He picked him up horizontally and strode rapidly outside.
When Su Nian saw the man rush out carrying Liang Sheng, he froze for a moment, then immediately followed behind and yelled: “President Shen, where are you going?!”
Shen Xingyu ignored him and got into the car.
Su Nian was a step too late. Qin Lou slammed on the gas pedal and drove toward the hospital.
Panting, Su Nian watched the speeding car leave. His gaze was sinister and jealous, lacking any trace of weakness.
He had guessed right; Shen Xingyu did care about Liang Sheng! He yelled at him last night, but turned around and kissed him!
Hospital.
“Where’s the doctor?! Doctor!”
Shen Xingyu rushed into the emergency room carrying Liang Sheng.
Liang Sheng shivered in his arms, his face turning even paler. The cramping pain in his stomach came in surging waves, one after another, making him curl his body up as tears of agony spilled from the corners of his eyes.
“What’s the patient’s condition?”
A figure walked briskly out from behind the curtain.
“He ate a little spicy food, and then… it’s you?”
When Shen Xingyu clearly saw the doctor who emerged, his originally anxious face instantly turned cold, his eyes full of hostility.
Xie Zhengran seemed to sense the other party’s unfriendliness, but didn’t pay it any mind. He naturally recognized the man in front of him as the young master of the wealthiest family in Long City, but he didn’t know the relationship between Liang Sheng and the man, nor did he understand why the man recognized him, as they had never met before.

- Sichuan Spicy Diced Chicken (辣子鸡丁 / Laziji): A famous Sichuan dish made by stir-frying chopped chicken with a massive amount of dried chilies and Sichuan peppercorns, known for being extremely spicy and numbing. Liang Sheng suffers severe stomach pain and vomiting because he was forced to eat it despite his inability to handle spicy food.
- Wild boars can’t eat fine bran (野猪吃不了细糠): A Chinese idiom used to mock someone who is used to rough, low-quality things and cannot adapt to or appreciate high-quality, refined things.
