Chapter 73: I Can Grant You One Wish
Sure enough, as soon as the two returned home, they were scolded harshly by Su Yi.
“Outrageous!”
“You two are simply acting outrageously!”
“Jiamu is immature, but Chen Cheng, are you immature too?”
“Just letting your brother get physical with someone?”
Su Yi was so angry she didn’t even eat dinner. She sat on the sofa accusing Chen Cheng. Chen Jiamu frowned; he didn’t quite understand. When he was little, his mother clearly wasn’t this mean and impossible to communicate with.
Why had she become so unreasonable and difficult as they grew up, as if she couldn’t listen to anything?
Was it menopause?
“I did the scolding, and I splashed the water. If you want to scold someone, scold me. It has nothing to do with Sis.”
Chen Jiamu pushed Chen Cheng behind him, using his broad frame to block Su Yi’s needle-like gaze.
“Of course I’m going to scold you!”
“Why did you go and cause trouble? Fu Cai is quite nice, even if he isn’t very handsome. But he’s honest, obedient, and sensible. I just asked her to communicate and get to know him, not to marry him immediately!”
“Did you ask Sis if she liked him? And ‘honest’? He looks so ugly that just one glance is nauseating. He couldn’t even bear to pay for the tea—do you think trash like that is worth communicating with?”
Chen Jiamu felt Su Yi was simply impervious to reason, not listening to a word anyone said, only knowing how to output her own views.
“That’s because your sister delayed going! She insisted on taking an hour to get there! So of course she had to pay the bill!”
Su Yi was so angry her vision went dark, and she spoke without thinking. But after speaking, she realized the room had fallen silent.
Opening her eyes, she saw Chen Cheng looking at her with disappointment, and Chen Jiamu looking at her in disbelief.
“I…”
Realizing she had misspoken, Su Yi wanted to say something, but Chen Cheng straightened her back and stepped forward, her eyes disappointed and hollow. “Mom, do you feel that my staying at home is superfluous?”
“Is that why you can’t wait to push me out? Or is it that in your eyes, I am so unbearable that any man, or any man with money, is good enough to shove me off to?”
“If that’s the case, I won’t come back to the Chen house anymore. That way, you won’t have to be annoyed seeing me every day.”
“They say there is no mother in the world who doesn’t love her child. But Mom, it seems you haven’t loved me since I was small.”
“Elementary school parent-teacher meetings, middle school, high school… even my university graduation, you didn’t come a single time.”
“I used to comfort myself saying you might not have had time. But looking at it now, it seems you really just don’t love me.”
“Otherwise, you wouldn’t be in such a rush to push me out.”
“You don’t need to go to such great lengths anymore. I won’t go to a single blind date you arrange, and I won’t compromise.”
Chen Cheng went from sadness at the beginning to expressionless in the end. Over the years, she had become numb. If it were a teenage Chen Cheng, she might have cried and shouted her accusations, but she was twenty-six-year-old Chen Cheng now.
After speaking, Chen Cheng panted for a long time. She glanced at Chen Jiamu, then turned and walked outside.
Her thin figure looked very lonely in the cold wind, as if she were the only person left in the world.
Chen Cheng left. Chen Jiamu subconsciously followed. At the gate, Chen Cheng stopped him. “Go back. It’s her birthday today.”
“Dad will be back soon too.”
“Sis… you…” Chen Jiamu held her hand uneasily, his eyes full of worry.
“I’m fine. I just need to be alone for a bit.” Chen Cheng pushed his hand away, got into her car without looking back, and quickly drove out of the courtyard.
Chen Cheng was gone. Chen Jiamu stood at the gate in a daze for a long time, long enough for Chen Wensong to return and ask why he was standing there.
“Nothing.”
Chen Jiamu said nothing, turning to follow him back into the living room.
In the living room, Su Yi stared nervously at the main entrance. Hearing footsteps, she immediately stood up excitedly, but seeing it was the father and son, her eyes instantly dimmed.
“Eh, where’s Chengcheng?”
“It’s your birthday today; isn’t she coming back?”
Chen Jiamu smiled bitterly, shook his head helplessly, and walked to the dining table to sit down.
“She… she said she’s busy with work, so she won’t be coming back.”
Su Yi clenched her fists, forcing a bitter smile. Chen Wensong frowned. “That child, how is work more important than your birthday?”
Saying that, he moved to call Chen Cheng. Su Yi immediately stopped him, her tone anxious. “Aiya, if the child is busy, let her be busy.”
“There will be plenty more birthdays; missing this one doesn’t matter.”
Since Su Yi said so, Chen Wensong dropped it. The maid served the dishes only after the three sat down.
The table for three seemed a bit empty. Chen Jiamu looked at Su Yi with a complex expression. He didn’t understand which wire in her head had crossed to ruin a perfectly good relationship like this…
Only Chen Wensong was unaware during this meal. He had bought a cake for Su Yi. After eating, when the three cut the cake, Chen Wensong habitually cut it into four slices.
“Forgot, Chengcheng isn’t here.”
After a few bites of cake, Chen Jiamu felt his chest tighten. Using the excuse of being full, he went upstairs.
Back in his room, he told Li Xi about the incident. Li Xi comforted him, saying it would be fine once Chen Cheng thought things through. As for Su Yi, Li Xi didn’t know what to say.
“I miss you so much. If only you were here.”
Chen Jiamu lay on the bed unhappily, acting coquettish toward Li Xi in the camera.
Li Xi smiled dotingly, his heart warming. Suddenly, he leaned close to the camera and said, “It’s Auntie’s birthday today; I can grant you one wish.”
“Then I want to see you.”
Chen Jiamu tilted his head, revealing half of his clean, fair face. Li Xi was stunned for a moment.
After a long while, Chen Jiamu heard his slightly indistinct voice: “Santa Claus received your wish.”
