Chapter 87: Why is Zhou Xie Clinging to Wen Rong? Part 1
“Leon, move aside.”
Zhou Xie’s voice was trembling. If it weren’t for the crowd at the train station, he would have dealt with Wen Rong right there and then.
Leon didn’t move, supporting his forehead with a bitter smile. “Wen Rong, Zhou Xie is just worried about your safety. Not only are you a public figure, but you also provoked Councilman Wang Sichen. He might do to you what he did to Zhang Jincheng.”
Wen Rong shut his mouth and lowered his head apologetically.
Leon looked at Zhou Xie again, his eyes signaling, I’ve scolded him, you can shut up now.
Zhou Xie: “…”
Zhou Xie endured it with effort, likely having a headache, as he lowered his head to shake it out, then rubbed the space between his brows.
Half a second later, unable to hold it in, he opened his mouth to explode again. Fortunately, a mysterious person taller than Leon appeared in the crowd.
The reason he was mysterious was that this person was wearing a baseball cap and a mask. Immediately after appearing abruptly, he pulled Wen Rong away and blocked the space between Leon and Wen Rong himself.
He was very tall.
People as tall as him were rare. He wore a black windbreaker hastily thrown over a white summer sports set. Even from a short distance away, one could feel the heat radiating from his muscles.
So this person was Shi Ye, who had just run out from the competition venue, even if there was no grey hair under the baseball cap.
Leon and Shi Ye stared at each other in silence for two seconds. In that unfriendly gaze, it became clear that with people coming and going here, this was absolutely not a good place to talk.
“Everyone’s here. Whose car has enough seats?”
In the end, the four of them got into Shi Ye’s nanny van.
The scenery outside the window changed. The roads of District 1, where all the Federation’s wealthy gathered, were wide. Wen Rong looked out but could see nothing except the distant azure horizon.
He felt something was missing.
Suddenly, he realized. “Senior, the buildings here are so short. Not as high as the ones at the school gate.”
Leon: “Mn. When the site was selected, there was a specific requirement that buildings were not allowed to be too tall, otherwise it would affect the skyline view.”
“Wow—”
Before the exclamation ended, Zhou Xie said coolly, “When the site was selected, the government wanted to scoop more money from the wealthy, requiring that buildings couldn’t be built too high, so they could only expand the land area. As a result, every rich person fought for acreage, land prices rose, and the government legitimately obtained a large amount of funds.”
Wen Rong: “…”
Leon smiled slightly. “What Zhou Xie says also makes sense.”
“Indirectly, this led to zero productivity in District 1. All food and materials have to be transported from other districts. Costs are high, prices are high, and ordinary people cannot survive.”
It seemed Zhou Xie got excited when speaking about this topic, continuing even with no one answering: “Over time, the region determined that the wealthy class would cling tightly together. The class gap in the whole society widened. The poor couldn’t climb up to the wealthy class, and the poor people the wealthy came into contact with were all of the servant, driver, or subordinate status.”
Amidst Zhou Xie’s continuous lecture, the nanny van finally arrived at the address the HR had sent Wen Rong.
Before getting out, Leon reminded Wen Rong, “Public transport in District 1 isn’t convenient. We’ll wait for you at the entrance. Message me when the interview is over.”
Wen Rong hesitated, then nodded.
He got out of the car and looked up at the tallest building he had seen since arriving here. It had a total of 7 floors. Judging by the width, it was about the same as the school administration building.
Based on the knowledge Zhou popularized, Wen Rong judged that this company must be very rich.
Finally, Wen Rong took out his phone to glance at the interview guide, prepared his self-introduction, and then sent a message to HR.
Inside the car.
Shi Ye finally couldn’t bear it anymore and took off his mask and baseball cap, revealing the buzz cut he had shaved specially before the competition.
Because he had never cut his hair this short before, he looked overly strange to the people who grew up with him. Leon couldn’t help laughing. “Nice hairstyle.”
Shi Ye raised his hand to touch his smooth head, boasting, “This is healthier.”
“Mn. Pfft—”
The mockery was too obvious. Shi Ye couldn’t help but say, “Wen Rong specifically told me to cut it. He said it looks good.”
Leon stopped laughing as expected. The corner of his mouth froze on his face for half a second before he raised an eyebrow. “That means there’s still a lot of room for improvement in your looks.”
Shi Ye refused to show weakness. “You didn’t get any suggestions, which means you’re hopeless.”
“Why doesn’t it mean he’s very satisfied with me?”
“F*ck! How could he be satisfied with you—”
Zhou Xie interrupted the two: “Almost 20 years old, are you finally going to bicker like primary schoolers?”
Shi Ye and Leon each looked in a different direction and stopped talking.
Zhou Xie lowered his chin, eyes looking upward. “Leon, do you plan to spoil Wen Rong like this? He doesn’t want to enter the Student Council at all right now.”
Leon turned back and spread his hands. “Can’t you see that Wen Rong is a stubborn person?”
“He listens to you the most. You should persuade him.”
Shi Ye’s expression instantly tightened. “Says who—”
Zhou Xie glanced over coldly. “Any normal person can see Wen Rong is close to him.”
“I have a good relationship with Wen Rong too.”
“Oh,” Zhou Xie gave a perfunctory sound and continued speaking to Leon. “You should make it clear to him. With that restless personality of his, it’s impossible for him to go to the research base.”
“If my persuasion worked, I would be in a relationship with him right now.”
Leon thought of the scene where Wen Rong said, “Then I just won’t get married,” and his temples throbbed with pain.
How could Zhou Xie dare say over the phone that Wen Rong always went against him, when Wen Rong also loved going against him?
In this conversation, only Shi Ye, having learned that his “rival failed to conquer Wen Rong,” still had a good expression. He crossed his legs, looking leisurely and magnanimous. “Wen Rong does what he likes. Why are you controlling him? Control yourself.”
“If Leon hadn’t said that pile of nonsense, who would manage him!”
Zhou Xie took a deep breath, anger surging again. “Only a fool would ignore a private jet to take a train.”
“Who are you calling names—” Shi Ye reached out with his long arm and grabbed Zhou Xie’s collar. “You’re the fool.”
Leon made a fake gesture to block Shi Ye, aiming his words at Zhou Xie. “If you respected Wen Rong even a little bit and understood his personality before acting, you wouldn’t have made things this messy.”
“Me?” Zhou Xie was incredulous. It was probably the first time his ability to handle matters was questioned.
“You don’t even know that his material desires are very low… Shi Ye, let go of Zhou Xie. I want to open the window for air. Don’t get photographed.”
Only then did Shi Ye let go. Leon pressed the button for the car window, and wind rushed in along with the sunlight.
“He is a person with high emotional needs.”
Borrowing this bit of warmth, the smile on Leon’s face finally seemed less stiff.
It was only during that hug that Leon realized why the three members of the News Club were more important than him in Wen Rong’s eyes.
—Because the three from the News Club had always stayed by Wen Rong’s side.
Clearly, Wen Rong didn’t need any material things, nor did he need any deeply engraved sacrifices. He just needed simple companionship.
Precisely what he couldn’t give.
Leon couldn’t help a bitter smile, feeling played by God.
He, who would go to a closed environment at any time, actually fell for a person with high needs. Just thinking about the future, he felt fear because of the “inevitable separation.”
“I forgot to ask, what is Wen Rong doing here?”
Shi Ye suddenly spoke up.
Two seconds later, Zhou Xie also asked, “What was that about earning money he mentioned just now?”
Leon didn’t know if the two were deliberately changing the subject, but it didn’t matter anymore. They didn’t have worries in that aspect anyway.
Dispelling some pessimistic thoughts, Leon organized his emotions and told the two about Wen Rong submitting a resume to the organizers.
After listening, Zhou Xie was speechless for nearly half a minute. “What is he thinking?”
