Part 5
Ning Yunyi went to the backyard. First, he used his wristband to turn off the surrounding defenses for one minute. Using an Invisibility Talisman, he quickly slipped out through a gap before turning the defenses back on to ensure no one would notice. He then left quickly.
This time, as expected, no one followed him. He reached a certain spot, quickly boarded a spaceship, and headed toward the location of the signal flare. As he neared the area, he stowed the ship and proceeded on foot.
When he was almost there, he went into the water, tore off the Invisibility Talisman, changed into night clothes and a mask, and climbed back onto the shore.
Likely no one would expect him to come straight out of the water. Even if they saw him, they would think they had seen a ghost.
Ning Yunyi didn’t see Rui Hu and the others at the flareās launch site, but there were obvious traces of blood. Frowning, he followed the scent of the blood, and before long, he heard movement ahead.
Before he could get there, several spaceships were also heading this way, clearly arriving to wipe out the Shifter Alliance after receiving word.
Before they could disembark, Ning Yunyi drew his saber and flashed forward, successfully rescuing the several people who were already exhausted. Without looking back, he ordered, “Go!”
Rui Hu, the leader, could barely lift her hand. If they hadn’t been prepared, they would have been completely wiped out.
Rui Hu knew they would only be a hindrance. She led the few remaining shifters in their animal forms and fled.
Ning Yunyi used his saber to quickly deal with the armored guards who had initially besieged Rui Hu and injured several others.
The spaceships landed at this time. The man in the lead saw Ning Yunyi, and his eyes lit up. “Don’t let him get away! The Master said if you can’t catch him alive, kill him!”
Ning Yunyi sneered. Who’s going to fight you head-on?
He ran straight toward a certain direction. He was extremely fast and soon reached the previous body of water, diving in headfirst.
The moment he entered the water, he used his spiritual energy to protect himself, blocking the mental attacks immediately launched from the shore. Using the cover of night, he swam toward another location.
When the people on the shore had exhausted most of their mental attacks and thought the man must be dead, they waited for a long time, but no body floated up. Their expressions changed drastically. “Go down and fish him out!”
On the other side, Ning Yunyi had already escaped their range. Once clear of the attackers, he immediately applied an Invisibility Talisman, left the water, and walked away right under their noses.
Ning Yunyi circled around several times before returning to the underground palace altar where he had first saved Rui Hu and the others.
He revealed himself before the entrance, just in case, and sent a message to Yousi.
Yousi soon came out to let him in. His expression was grave; he had clearly just arrived after hearing the news and hadn’t participated in the previous fight.
As they neared the entrance, Yousi sighed. “Sheāll die at their hands sooner or later. But for the sake of her mission, she can’t just ignore them…”
He was helpless and unable to change anything. If she didn’t save them, none of those shifters would survive.
Knowing this, Yousi was both angry and helpless seeing Rui Hu in this state.
Ning Yunyi had guessed as much when he came. If those people were truly the Crown Princeās men and couldn’t find the Allianceās headquarters, they would definitely find a way to lure them out.
The way they did it was… betting on who was more kind and righteous.
If they went to save them, they were knowingly walking into a death trap; if they didn’t, they would have to watch their kin be killed. The innocent shifters had been captured specifically to force them out.
How could Rui Hu watch them die?
When Yousi reached the door, he sighed. “That shifter still wasn’t saved. He died halfway here. Those people never intended for him to survive. Many were injured this time. Her… situation isn’t great either.”
Ning Yunyi: “I know. Let me see her first.”
When Ning Yunyi arrived, Rui Hu was already drifting in and out of consciousness. She had been protecting her companions and was the most seriously injured. The others all had various wounds and were treating each other.
Ning Yunyi walked quickly to Rui Hu, checked her condition, had Yousi carry her to the back hall, and began to treat her.
Before long, Rui Huās life was saved, but she had been heavily injured and would need to recover for a while.
Ning Yunyi looked at Rui Hu, not knowing what to say. Yousi clenched his fists and was about to speak when Rui Hu suddenly opened her eyes.
Once Rui Huās eyes caught Ning Yunyi, she coughed. Ignoring her struggle to breathe, she tried her best to pull at Ning Yunyiās sleeve. “I’m sorry… for causing more trouble for you, Mr. Bai. I called for help this time because I was afraidāafraid I wouldn’t survive… I want to ask a favor of you.
“I know you are a man of great ability. Our Alliance is still too weak. As long as it exists, my strength can’t protect these people. But as long as Iām alive, Iāll protect them for another day. Iām just afraid that if I die… I won’t be able to fulfill that person’s mission. I would be failing her for helping me escape that hell back then.
“So ifāif one day I die, you don’t have to be sad for me. I only hope that one day, if shifters are no longer treated as they are now… youāll help me expose the evil deeds of someone high up who was once keeping shifters imprisoned to extract their mental power. We have so many kin who were locked up many years ago. My mother was one of them. I was… born there.”
Ning Yunyi had initially thought Rui Hu was afraid she wouldn’t survive and wanted him to take over the Alliance. He hadn’t expected to hear such explosive news. Something flashed through his mind, and his expression changed. “You said… you were born there?”
If he remembered correctly, Rui Hu was already forty. Didn’t that mean that place had existed for at least forty years?
Rui Hu gave a bitter smile. “Yes. I was the only one who escaped back then. I shouldn’t have been able to escape. I don’t know how I ended up in a certain place, and I was about to be caught. A fellow shifter who was locked up there saw that I was young and used all her mental power to send me out. She told me she couldn’t get out herself because her mental power was too strong and they wouldn’t let her go. But I was less than ten years old, and my mental power was weak, so I could escape. She told me that if I had the chance, I should protect our kin well.”
Rui Hu gripped her hands weakly, looking even more lonely and bitter. “I thought if I worked hard for so many years, I could finally accomplish something. But who knew… I still can’t do anything.”
If she died one day, no one would ever know about that harmful place, no one would know about the benefactor who saved her, and no one would know that the benefactor ever existed.
She hadn’t dared to speak of it before for fear that no one would believe her, but now she was even more afraid… that if she didn’t speak now, there might not be another chance.
